Well, actually? You should. Seriously. This town is just plain ugly....(I am not coming from this town, i just study here. I come from the former capitol Germany Bonn. Now that is a nice town :D)

I wanna bump this up by showing you why Giessen is ugly...
This thing is the best known building of the city...(I am talking about that little 'bridge' for the pedestrians to get across that stupid crossroads). It is nicknamed "elephant toilet" by the population, when you combine the google maps satelite image with the wiki image in your head to a 3d-model, you know why ;)
Now, the city has some nice buildings, historical, three or four of them...but the vast majority of the buildings is just ugly. It does serve its purpose though, the city i mean. That is the only reason i can stand it here.

Just wanted to give you some reason to get to love your own sity/living place a bit more by showing the uglyness of another place :D:D

And they have a stick up their ass about queers.

(I used to work for a balloon company, actually. Was even working on obtaining my license before I transferred to university.)

Yep, titania. Giessen is some 45 minutes with the train from Frankfurt/Main. In the middlee of nowhere, erm, i mean Hessia. ;)

What did you do in Staufenberg/Germany?

Ogion

Actually, Staufenberg seems to be some 10km from where i live now. Administratively it belongs to Giessen. ;)

I was there as an exchange student for a week. That was quite idyllic place, and the 17th century houses were cool ;) .

I spent 24 hours in Frankfurt once on a long flight layover to Israel. It was a beautiful town. I'd like to go back to Germany some day.

The only thing is, I had a friend who taught me a little German and told me the best way to greet everyone was by saying "Fick Dich", but no one there seemed to appreciate the gesture much. That was a little upsetting. I was just trying to be friendly. :D

I spent a summer in Germany a few years back, mostly in Bavaria in die Fränkische Schweiz (the triangle between Bamberg, Nürnburg, and Bayreuth). I took a trip to see some relatives near Stuttgart, and took another excursion through Nürnburg to München to see the Deutsches Museum. It was a very fun trip. I hope to return someday.

Well, uhm, NoI. You know what that phrase means, right? Should at least be easy enough to translate. And an American would probably not appreciate when you greet him with "Fuck you" either :D

Seems like you know some things about German geography then, Fusion ;) (Though of course in Germany there is constant joking about Bayern (Bavaria) not being Germany but rather being foreign country or perhaps belonging to Austria (which in turn can't get along with each other)...:D But well, that's just for the fun ;)

Ogion, Has the "elephant toilet" tempted any practical jokers? I can imagine that the phantom shitters (jokers who covertly shit in inappropriate places and walk away) would find it hard to resist.

For those of you unfamiliar with Minnesota: Sunday we had temperatures around 20F or so. Yesterday highs were around 40F. Tonight, the lows will be around -20F with windchills around -40F. Tomorrow will be highs around 5F. As we say here, "That's Minnesota for ya!"

Yup. And it's pretty much like that all year long (or was, before the crazy weather changes). That's why I can't understand the appeal of snow. Or of seasons.

On another topic, I looked and looked and couldn't actually see the toilet.

Uhm, huh? I don't know much about elephants either, there were just some people who thought that these big holes in that bridge (three meter diameter or something) look stupid, and so they searched a name for it...

Outside your window.
I'm from Brisbane, capital city of Queensland, Australia.

Heres a preview of the weather:
Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, flash flood, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, bushfire, hot... et cetera

We have a big problem with drought here, and we have rules about water usage because the main dam in South East Queensland is at only 32.73%.

I feel a little jelous of your winter exploits. I love the cold and it never snows here...there are a few select places you can go down south where it snows but I've never seen snow in the street before.

As for the influence on my life, hmm. Well I like the multiculturalism we have here. Its crazy. Half my friends were born and raised overseas and the ones that weren't have foreign parents.

Stereotypes, particularly ones americans come up with, are hilarious. Everyone seems to think we live out in the country on farms...which is ridiculous considering almost all of the population is based on the coastline in cites.

This is particularly hilarious to an Aussie:

http://treebeard31.blogspot.com/2007/08/australian-tourism-questions-answered.html

For the sake of your sanity, don't believe them...except for the dropbears...those things are dangerous.

Public Service Announcement:

A quick comment about America bashing. 21% of all English speakers are American. That's 14 times more than Australia. Maybe, just MAYBE, that could account for the ease of finding Americans saying stupid things. Stupid people are everywhere. Please don't judge us all by NoID10Ts... :D

Also stereotyping another population's tendency to come up with inaccurate stereotypes may not be the best tactic.

Geez... am I feeling confrontation? I guess its all the job hunting. Speaking of which, anyone know of a job I might be able to get in San Francisco? I'm gettin' pretty desperate here.

When have I ever said anything stupid? I am the very picture of ettiquette, cultural sensitivity, and diplomacy! I've only started a handful of international incidents. :D

BTW, what's in San Francisco, Decaf? School, romance, just for the hell of it? Just curious.

What's your field again, Decaf? There's a company in San Fran that I would love to work for: IDEO. They're a design house, but they have a very unique holistic view of what they do. They say they look for "T" shaped people; people with a broad range of knowledge, and one or two expertise. They employ designers, artists, engineers, psychologists, business people, etc.

If I lived near one of their locations I would jump at the chance to work with them.

Romance and adventure. I want to live somewhere besides my home town (San Antonio, TX and Augusta, GA don't count, because if they are indicative, the world sucks) and I'd like to do it with someone I know. Plus my girlfriend already lives there and if I don't move with her, then I may as well call off the relationship because I don't have enough reason to not move with her except that I like Portland.

What's your field again, Decaf?

B.S. Chemistry, M.S. Semiconductor Processing, self study Psychology

Wow... I would also love to work for IDEO. I'm writing my cover letter as I spea... er... well I can't type two things at once, so I'll write it in a moment. I wish I'd studied more material chemistry.

well. I live in good old Denmark, the oldest monarchy, the oldest flag, vikings. And we kind of own greenland.

the place is flat. flat out flat, and that's due to the iceage and the glaciers, moving loads of rock and ultimately flattening it out across most of it.

I like it, we have forest around where I live and lakes, and there's nothing dangerous about it. No killer animals, earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes. Only really rare insane storms, and rain.

it has decent weather, spring + summer, 20-35 celcius. And enough space to enjoy the nature.

it has excellent health care, you get paid to go to university. Finding a job is still relatively easy, and people have money.

I don't know what stereotypes people have, but we have our own version of Hillbillies, and albeit abit rough, many farmers are labelled with all kinds of things. We also got alot of immigrants that people don't like.

erhm, there's also the Viking thing, and the fact, that alot of people don't know where the hell denmark is, some still say it's the capital of sweden.

Okay, for all of you who are from someplace warm, just to make you feel superior:

This morning when I went out to start my car the air temperature was nearly -20F (-29C) with wind-chills of -35F (-37C). It was so cold my pants hurt... :(

I'm from Northern Virginia, USA. Yay me, I get to live near the nation's capital.

I've lived in the DC suburbs my whole life... I don't really care too much for it, but it's better than the middle of nowhere.

I'm a female INTJ. I think this is curse enough... I'm blessed with intelligence, but tend more towards INTP-like habits and ambition. I'm the girl that scares off all the guys (and girls) that lack self-esteem and find me threatening.

A - Germany, near Cologne, but pretty country-like.

B - I totally love it. We have nice hills and the weather is fine enough, even though it's the rainiest part in Germany.

C - Hmmm... Those who know me say I'm a farmer. (with negative connotations)

Hmm... I think it's about time I start bragging with the location where I live.

The crazy guy on that overkill swing is me. :D

And from where did you get your national flag from?:D

I'm from Haapsalu, Estonia, from the 13th century my counrty has been occupied by different countries. By Germany, by Denmark, by Sweden, by Russia, by some of them more than once. But we did have 90th jubilee last year:)
We are looked as a little brother of Finland as we are both Finno-Ugric or Baltic-Finnic.
Since our country in history has been occupied so many times. People are sometimes too patriotic and are sceptical or think bad towards some nations.
Compared to other Baltic States we have many islands as Latvia and Lithuania have none.;)

Estonians have been thought as slow, unemotional cranky bastards, and it is, to some extent, true.:o:p

Well here i go. I am from Constanta, a sea side city from Romania. Yes, i know you all think of Romania as a low-tech country. You are generally right. As you probably know we are a Latin people. The Roman empire conquered Dacia in 101 AD by the roman emperor Trajan. After the retreat of roman forces in 275 AD some early countries we're formed. After many wars we look like a fish on the map. My town was called Tomis and it was a greek colony i think, founded around 500 BC. Our region was in control of the Ottoman Empire for centuries (no, im not turkish). We are a proud people and generally very passionate. Let's see if i can get some pics from around town and the surrounding area.

1. The old casino - in the '50s it was the coolest place
2. Downtown near the marina
3. The statue of Romulus and Remus in front of the Archeology Museum
4. The new Lighthouse
5. The park in front of the municipality.

My reply:

I am Canadian.

Born in Vancouver, moved to Nanaimo at 6yrs, then to Duncan, then to Okotoks, and finally here in Calgary. Been to 7 schools so far.

Calgary is not the best city to live in.

People are impatient, and want money money money.

And the driving is the shit-hole, especially at rush hour.

But the countryside is beautiful. It can get cold, but you dress warm and it is energizing. I can not stand it too hot. I feel like I am going to die.

I really love Lisbon because it's a very old city and so, full of the unknown to be discovery and is a modern city where I fit in perfectly.

The same question from above. From Lisbon or Portugal?

A. Born in Texas, raised in California, currently residing in Arizona.

B. Well, I don't even remember Texas at all, moved out when I was two. California was alright, I lived in NorCal, and I would have like to live in SoCal much more...but I didn't...and I really love Arizona. It's great here.

C. When I tell my Arizonian friends that I'm from California, first they ask me why the hell I moved out. Then they ask me if I know how to surf, if I've ever met a celebrity, things like that. And now that I'm in Arizona, all of my Californian friends think I've morphed into some conservative Republican who only plays golf all day.

Yep. Not true.

A-Where are you from..Okay I don't want an address children...just a country, city maybe...

I live on a 400 acre farm in Central Oklahoma about 50 miles Southeast of Oklahoma City, it is hilly terrain, not much bottom land suitable for farming, but very scenic. The folks from Oklahoma City consider the local Highway a scenic route...

B-Do you enjoy living there/ have a sense of identity due to it?

Yes, The property has been in my family's possession for over a century. It is a HOME. I feel sorry for so many people. They live in much nicer houses than I do, but those houses are not Homes. I think that a great deal of a person's identity has to do with where they 'feel' at Home...

C- What traits/stereotypes do you beleive you are cursed/blessed with?

Ummm stereotypes 'Dumb Okie' 'Stupid Christian" 'Hick/Farmer...

Good traits -Patience, Tolerance, Kindness, ability to Kill without compunction...

I live in Kalispell, Montana, USA. I'm surprised if you know where this is off the top of your head.

B-Do you enjoy living there/ have a sense of identity due to it?
Well, I just moved in last June. I still don't quite belong here. I like it here though. Incredible mountains, beautiful views everywhere you look, nice people, and great skiing. I don't really get attached to any place I live in. I've lived in Kansas for 11 years, and I don't feel like a Kansan.

C- What traits/stereotypes do you beleive you are cursed/blessed with?

Like I said, I don't feel tied to any one place. The only stereotype I really retain is the american stereotype of being fat and stupid. However, here are some stereotypes for your enjoyment.

Kansas: bible thumper, farmer

Virginia: southerner, hick, confederates

Montana: "lived on the res" (indian reservation), hick, druggie (tons of meth labs around here), farmer

Oh, I'm from Manassas VA.

Oh, and it has hit 70 degrees in the middle of February. What. The. Hell. This is not normal. I enjoy SNOW during my winter, KTHXBAI...
