Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet

this album scares and disturbs me, the truth it tells and the the guilt it evokes in me, this album is over-whelmingly poignant

despite this i have listened to it 5 times in the last 1 1/2 days

Shostakovich - Symphony No.4, Kitajenko. Anybody else here into classical, perhaps? :)

I actually haven't listened to his symphonies...sadly :(. I'm only slightly familiar with his string quartets (which, from what I've heard, are awesome!) Actually, come to think of it - I'm not too informed on anything later than the romantic era (I should start listening to more contemporary music, though...):o

Right now, I'm listening to YouTube - Cream- Steppin' Out (BBC Sessions)...an awesome example of, as the announcer puts it, "The Mighty Cream".

Yes, I'm listening to Rheinberger's Florentine Symphony.

Not only was he a great composer, becoming organist at the Capital of Vaduz's St. Florin's Parish Church at the age of seven --- which anyone should admit is fairly unbeatable; but Liechtensteiner notables are dear to any jacobite heart since the next in line but one to the Stuart regalities is Sophie, Hereditary Princess of Liechtenstein.

20th century is very diverse, way more than previous eras. Though it does have a lot of experimentation in sound, music theory, and the concept of music itself, there were many composers who wrote in a more "traditional" way, so don't dismiss 20th c. because there were a couple of Stockhausens in it. Check out Bartok, Poulenc, Vaughan Williams, Prokofiev, Britten, Schnittke (his late works), and Shostakovich.

If you're interested in symphonies - start with the 4th, then 5th, then 8th, then everything else (I'd recommend 6, 7, 10, 15 first). For string quartets seek records of Fitzwilliam or Emerson quartets, start with 7th and listen in ascending order 'til 15th. Also check out his cello concertos, violin voncertos, sonatas for violin and piano, viola and piano.

Dir En Grey - Vinushka (Uroborous, i just discovered this today and i am just blown away. i am listening in amazement  <----like that)

they are kind of like Opeth, Tool...from Japan, and are bloody amazing

fuck, this is probably the best album from 2008, better than 'Bedlam in Goliath', 'Traced in Air', hell...it is even giving 'Watershed' problems, serious problems.

i am just...AMAZED. i feel the way i did when i first heard Lykathea Aflame

Tovarish Stalin

It would be simple to pretend that I had heard of Vladimir Semyonovich Vysotsky, a famous Russian jewish singer who died in 1980, but I had not; yet a million people attended his funeral. I just found him whilst hopping through Youtube...

Here is his Tovarish Stalin:

YouTube - Владимир Ð’Ñ‹Ñоцкий Tovarish Stalin

Never having been able to learn Russian, although almost as devoted to Russian history as that of Germany and pre1688 Britain, here are the lyrics which I cannot read, but which are probably not as laudatory as dedicated anthems --- 'A Song for Koba !' --- pre1953.

Hmmm... I don't like Vysotsky, but those two are pretty good.

oh I'm so old fashioned and sensitive. I've been listening to loads of The Smiths and Morrissey. His lyrics are so good. Sometimes I feel I have no identity I can relate so much. So witty, so good.

I think the English are musical geniuses. Not like the French. They only sing about sex and love.

I'm guessing that I am the only one on the planet who listens to darkcore.

They must be exterminated, either by destroying the brain, or severing the brain from the rest of the body.
