Hello all.
I haven't been around for quite a while now as I have been busy with moving from Central Victoria to Phillip Island and getting settled.
Recently I've given thought to this topic and have come to the conclusion that many of our rights are being abbrogated or ignored due to the...
Exactly what Architect says. The book was fantastic. The movies not so much.
The same thing happened with Dune and the horendous movie released in 1984.
There are so many good sci-fi novels that are one offs.
Below is a list of some of my favourite sci-fi authors who seem to release very few series;
Greg Egan - Diaspora and Permuation City are my favourites.
Larry Niven - Everything he writes is good.
Robert J. Sawyer - Has a couple of good...
@ TriflinThomas
That last article is pretty darn interesting. I'd never even considered the languages of multiple birth children.
The whole part about the deaf kids creating their own sign language almost answers my question. Except, those children had already had contact with adults who...
A few years ago I read an article written by a researcher into Autism (Can't remember the name of the article or the author, sorry) in which it was postulated that all humans are slightly autistic. Specifically they were linking it with creativity. They thought it might prove to be the...
I think these experiences can all be explained by associative memories. I know that certain music, smells, tastes, etc all make me recall certain periods of my life.
@ TriflinThomas
If the metalic carer would cause issues I'm sure we could devise a more human-like form. Besides, I have heard of various 'wild-kids', so obviously adult human contact isn't required.

What makes you say the first human being had to be a child? Was it born from 'Homo...
@ pjoa09
My figure of 20 was actually somewhat random. I was just trying to make clear that it was more than 1 and at least enough to develop some sort of community.
As far as diseases are concerned, they could all be kept in a giant hermetically sealed environment.
I agree that one of...
I said 'children' not child. Obviously a lone child would have little reason to develop language.
I'm pretty sure it would be possible to limit the exposure of these children to their care providers. Today we could utilise automation. So a group of children raised by machines.
@ ProxyAmenRa
So, somebody actually isolated children to test the hypothesis, or was that an educated guess? If the former, I'd have to question the data as it would probably be quite old (I doubt whether it would be possible to do such research in modern times).
If an amoral researcher were to obtain a group of twenty or so new-born infants and isolate them, how long would it take them to develop complex language with grammar and what-not?
For what percentage of human's existence did we not yet have a complex language? Would the time span (to...
How surprising that science becomes equated with 'god'.
Surely only luddites want to abandon scientific research (whilst maintaining access to the rest of the products of science that make their lives comfortable).
Pointing out that things like accurate gps rely on an understanding of...
Heh, I didn't even realise that they had started until I noticed that the google page had changed. Like some others here I used to follow them when I was younger. Now I just see them as a means for a lot of people to vicariously 'play for their country'. It makes about as much sense (to me)...
When considering the singularity and what comes after it I can't help but think that humans will be forced to bring in a 'clause' stating that a human is someone who's ancestors (or templates) were human. The price of not doing so will be pogroms the likes of which humanity has yet to witness...
Thanks for reminding me. I had heard of The Silver Rule before but it had slipped my mind.
The only thing preventing it from being universal is hypocrisy. I think that is the only way someone can not agree with the Silver Rule.
So what? Right and wrong can't be determined by vote. Historically the majority of people thought that slavery was okay despite the truth being otherwise.
The best universal moral is a version of The Golden Rule - Do not do unto others that which you don't want done unto yourself.
The sad thing is that I have actually given this some thought. Even sader is the thought that I could do a good job of it. I don't buy into the notion that 'absolute power corrupts absolutely'.
There is such a large list of things I would change. In no particular order;
Start a serious...
This is a dream of mine as well. I've actually given it some thought (I am an INTP after all). The grandest scheme I have come up with is the development of a phonetic alphabet that covers every single sound that humans make in language as well as maybe a few gestures and emotions.
So why do we continue to refer to them with racial terms that are apparently no longer applicable? What percentage of negro/caucasian ancestory is required before one is no longer negro/caucasian but rather mixed race, hodge-podge or what ever else you want to call it? If half of my ancestors...
After reading everyone elses ideas I'm not so sure mine are even remotely right. Anyway, here they are (some have already been mentioned by others);
Rodney McKay - Stargate Atlantis
Gregory House - House
Temperance Brennan - Bones
Spencer Reid - Criminal Minds
Sheldon Cooper - Big Bang Theory...
I was wondering about this exact same thing last night as I was cooking dinner. Afterwards I even did a little search on google for info but couldn't really find anything other than the musings of other INTP's.
I would be very surprised if there wasn't some sort of causal link between race and...
How did I know that someone would come up with that?
Even if Hell were real it does not negate the fact that intention is the important issue.
I have never understood why there is a lesser punishment for attempted murder as opposed to murder. Not only were they willing to murder but they...
What I'm saying is that cheating is always trying to bypass the criterion of winning, thus you are not actually winning just seeming to win. A difference between reality and opinion.
Cheating may be part of life. However it is neither enviable nor desirable. It's the same as 'life isn't...
I have no knowledge of any relatives named Tamara. I knew there were other Jurisics around. I have actually found someone else from the other side of the world with the same birthdate and first, middle and last name.
My daughter IS in the top of her class (excepting Sports). But this isn't an excuse for what I see as a mis-reading of words as opposed to a mere mis-pronounciation. There is no possible way that 'ambleeance' can come from ambulance other than mis-reading. But the teacher won't correct her as...
My family actually pronounces it as 'jur-ris-ik'. Apparently it is the 57th most popular surname in Croatia.
If the girl's name is Amanda then she may well be my cousin. :confused:
Whilst I don't deny that smoking has negative effects on one's health, I believe that the burning of fossil fuels is more to be blamed for the increase in the incidence of lung cancer.
My 11 year old daughter gets high grades in Literacy and Language Development yet she still pronounces ambulance as 'ambleeance', cordial and 'cordigal', bought as 'brought' etc.
All I expect is people to pronounce words as they are spelt, or change their spelling to match their...
I came to that conclusion based on that fact that kids can pass their English classes despite various mis=spellings and mis-pronounciations. In many parts of England 'th' is replaced with 'f', which would be partially acceptable if the reverse were also true. When a New Zealander speaks it...
First off, I absolutely love that commercial. I wish we had that stuff here in Australia.
Personally I think nothing should be taboo due to causing offense. Who determines what is universally offensive?
My issue with the use of the word 'gay' in this context is that the word can be...
There are optimists, pessimists and realists. Unfortunately, the realist is nearly always considered to be a pessimist.
Optimist = I will win this race.
Pessimist = I won't win this race.
Realist = I may or may not win this race.
Shouldn't we all strive to be realists?
I notice that most people who are okay with cheating either cheat themselves or would if they could get away with it.
However, cheating is not winning. It is changing the rules of the game so as you can win. For example, in a running race a cheat would get in a car a drive to the finish...
What is this 'lifeforce' that can be ramped up with good foods? If it's energy, well that can come from 'bad' foods as well.
And I'd much rather a supermarket versus some street side stall with no notion of refrigeration or food hygiene.
I know this shouldn't bother me as much as it does (actually it shouldn't bother me at all), but I'm completely confused when it comes to pronounciation and spelling. This is one of my many pet peeves.
Apparently there is no such thing is incorrect spelling or pronounciation and I just don't...
Hello all,
I just joined this forum of fellow INTP's and thought I'd introduce myself.
About 8 years ago I completed a Myers-Briggs test for a job interview (that I never got) and not only discovered that there was a name/classification for 'other's like me', but also that there is nothing...
