Hmm, "quite listenable" is the impression I get from iTunes, and I don't like the genre; so I suppose he must be very good if you're into that kind of thing.

Is that the same devin townsend that stank up the Rush "Working Man" tribute? The performance was absolutely insulting

His music is not instantly gratifying. Listen to Terria a couple of times and...

The guys a legend as far as i'm concerned. Was lucky enough to see Strapping Young Lad at download festival a few years ago. Without doubt one of the finest gigs I've had the pleasure to witness. So monumentally heavy, it could rain slabs of granite and not be heavier.

Terria is truly brilliant, but I've only listened to that one out of all his non SYL albums, but I've been meaning to get more.

I don't think his genius really shines through as much in strapping young lad, the heaviness tends to get in the way of the songs being as varied or as technical as his other works

From a dangerously safe distance
(can't believe I haven't posted in this thread yet)

I've been listening to the title track off Addicted on YouTube seemingly nonstop (if you include it being stuck in my head) for a few days now. How on earth is his music not more popular? I've still yet to see anything from him (minus SYL) in any music stores around where I live. Yet another reason why I need to start shopping online for things.

I don't know which I like better, this song or "Coast" from Ki.

I've only heard "Regulator" but that's an awesome song. I should check out more. He seems like a really intelligent guy from the interviews I've heard with him.

And not to mention, quite the handsome chap ;)

Necro'd thread because this dude is probably my all time favorite musician.
devin-face.jpg

Yes. Indeed.

The most godly thing about Dev is probably his vocal range. Never heard anyone like him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtmjYuUbB_s

A quick intro into his last 4 album project:

Of the albums in the poll I will have to go with Synchestra.

The one thing I don't like about Devin, is that I never seem to listen to much else any more.

He should never have got rid of the beard either.

Could someone explain this to me? It's not that I don't like Devin Townsend, I have Terria and a few other things, I just don't understand why he's seen to be on a totally different level. What sets him apart? (I'm just curious.)

Admittedly, I have been distancing from metal over the last few years, so it might just be that my tastes are changing.

He may not be "on a different level", but he is definitely one of a kind. Unless of course, you can point me towards a few similar artists; last.fm has let me down so far.

Devins moved away from metal himself. I can't really class it as anything now, other than prog, the sheer scope of his work, and even of individual albums simply defies classification. Which deep-down, is probably what most of us like about it. Even in his SYL days he went beyond the genre.

While he borrows from a lot of places, he does not cater to any particular group. This in itself is not enough to put him on 'the next level', but it is nice to see someone refuse to acknowledge the authority of their genre on their sound and image. Other gamechangers include:
- his immense and unique vocal range.
- good range of styles that he does well.
- good supporting musicians.
- (arguably) good sense of humour.
- Likes to be different, BUT DOES NOT IDENTIFY HIMSELF THIS WAY. He is a likeable character who is more complex than other musicians who quite obviously monitor the shit out of their image.

I understand where you are coming from tho, there are plenty of bands that are considered amazing by many, that I just don't get. These bands include radio-head, metallica, Mr. Bungle, and dream theatre, as well as most older style rock metal.

As far as metal musicians are concerned, he is leaps and bounds above his peers. The only active single musicians(I know of) that I consider to be in the same league as Devin are.......Steven Wilson, Omar Rodriguez- Lopez, Mikael Akerfeldt(Opeth), Toby Driver(Maudlin of the Well/Kayo Dot) and a few others. I still think he is possibly more talented and gifted then all of them though. Like Cogwulf mentioned, I dont think there is anyone out there quite like him right now. I mean, listen to SYL Shitstorm then cool off with Terminal to get a sense his range.

The thing about his music is that it can sound pretty basic and conventional on a first listen. The first time I heard Strapping Young Lad I didnt think it was anything more than conventional metal, but upon closer listening it reveals itself to you as groundbreaking and innovative. Terria is another album of his that is deceptive on the surface. His songwriting for his solo stuff is usually of a basic and simplistic core, but beneath the power chords and verse/chorus structure lies some subtle intricacies and technicalities that show his "genius".

Metal doesnt appeal to Devin much these days either. Puffy, I dare you to try(at least) the 3 first songs off Ghost, one of his newest albums(June 2011 release)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFlir6scWvg
^That's about as far away from metal as you can get. Headphones are highly recommended(It is an "Ambient" record).

I recommend his last four album project(Ki, Addicted, Deconstruction, Ghost) I love all his work before these albums but these are a great representation of what his music is(every album is in a different style than the other)

His workrate is impressive as well:
SYL- Heavy as a really heavy thing 1995
Punky Bruster- Cooked on Phonics 1996
SYL- City 1997
Ocean Machine 1997
Infinity 1998
Physicist 2000
Terria 2001
SYL- SYL 2003
DTB- Accelerated Evolution 2003
Devlab 2004
SYL- Alien 2005
DTB- Synchestra 2006
SYL- The New Black 2006
The Hummer 2006
Ziltoid The Omiscient 2007
DTP- Ki 2009
DTP- Addicted 2009
DTP- Deconstruction 2011
DTP- Ghost 2011

Upcoming releases
DTP- Epicloud/Epiclouder 2012

Thanks for the responses. I'll have a listen to a few of them at work today, @Panopticon and let you know. I'm willing to put a bit of effort into someone if the potential's there, as many of my favourite musicians are ones I loathed on the first listen. :p

That is actually what I thought of Terria though, that it sounded like conventional metal. Could you describe the subtleties of it at all? :)

The main thing that stood out for me was the lyrics, Earthday was a bit of genius, but then I find listening to lyrics hard (and distracting - I rarely listen to lyrics), I generally have to read them especially in that kind of metal where the singer's growling. I thought it sounded like Dream Theatre in many places to, @Haboblado. :p But Dream Theatre are a similar thing for me, I like them, but they just sound like good examples of the genre (also they're one of those bands where speed = skill, I get a bit bored of 20 minute songs that just show off a solo from each member, if Devin's subtler I prefer that :p)

Terria and Ziltoid both sounded like parodies of metal though, if that makes sense, so is the subtlety of it in the context, maybe?

I would say the subtleties of it lies in the heavy multi-tracking technique("Wall of sound") that Devin and other artists have used, like Frank Zappa for best example. Terria has a lot of ambient work going on in it, like tons of background vocal layers, pianos, synths, samples, and other stuff to make his 4/4 metal power chord driven songs sound massive and more melodic. You can listen to almost any Dev album for 6 months and you will still hear new things in it, if that makes sense. From what I recall Terria is supposed to be an "introspective" album written about his home country Canada, so it's got some mellow atmosphere in there. I love the lush vocal layers in Canada(the song), pretty soothing.

He is definitely quite different from Dream Theater, and a hell of a lot more subtle. He is progressive like them, but it's more based on songwriting than it is instrumental masturbation. In my opinion Dream Theater are brilliant musicians but ok songwriters. They sound cheesy and cliche to me sometimes.
Dev is a little more unconventional in his songwriting, but he has only ever used guitar solos on rare occasions. Doesn't really show off instrumentally, although the Deconstruction album is perhaps the only exception to that, but that was part of the concept.

Terria and Ziltoid both sounded like parodies of metal though, if that makes sense, so is the subtlety of it in the context, maybe?
Hmm I'm not sure about those being a metal parody, but I do know Deconstruction was exactly that. The whole concept of it was based around making fun of the metal subculture, in a way. the lyrical context of it is more comical and silly than it is dark, while album is intentionally overblown to the max.

I'd say Terria is a dated example of his music though(11 years ago) and Ziltoid was just a home project with a drum machine which devin played everything on. I think its one of his weakest releases besides physicist. Me personally I like Deconstruction and Ghost the most, Synchestra third.

I get what you mean about Ghost being kinda boring and not particularly engaging. It sounds like easy listening but it is actually just as layered and chaotic as it's counterpart Deconstruction. It's an ambient project so it's based less on interesting compositions and relies heavily on multitracked sounds. It's definitly a grower though. I didnt find it particularly interesting for months.

The entire Discography of SYL could essentially be described as a parody of metal, but I don't see Deconstruction as a parody. His own explanation of Deconstruction was that he wanted to show people that he has developed as a person; he can no longer do metal because he doesn't have the emotions that were the inspiration for his old music. It's the opposite of a parody in some ways.

Deconstruction and his SYL work are my favourites, although I have not heard ghost. When I first got into SYL I did not like them because they were so full on I found it exhausting, but I adapted and now they give me chills up the spine on a regular basis.

In regard to a parody approach, I think Devin is laughing more with the metal community than at it. There are aspects of the metal community that are fully retarded and taken way too seriously, and I think Devin does a good job bringing the fun back into it.

Is anyone brave enough to take a crack at his MBTI? I would guess at heavy N, and probably P. He has bipolar disorder, and I'm not sure if that would confound his F, or be causal to it. I/E seems ambiguous, on one hand he is a chronic performer who demonstrates little reserve, but on the other he seems quite introverted in interviews. Is it possible to be an introvert with low inhibitions? I'm pretty terrible at typology.

He seems to fit the stereotype of the ENTP to me (based on the music), lots of experimentation/ randomness/ craziness. Ne seems more at the fore of it than Ti. That said, I wouldn't be biased against Fi and Se when it comes to music.. Se seems into experimentation as well..

Yeah, I LOVED Deconstruction (seems to be a common note in this thread, why do you think that is?)

I've played through Terria a good few times this week as well and it's just not doing anything for me, it reminds me of my response to Opeth, I appreciate that it's well crafted music, it just doesn't move me (as a whole, I mean). Deconstruction just feels really energised (I like chaotic music in general, anyway), where Terria feels a bit flat to me, in comparison.

I'm really picky with music though. :p

Yeah Terria doesn't seem all that great to me though I haven't listened to it all that much. My initial response to Opeth was similar to your own: not bad but not outstanding in any way. I now absolutely adore Opeth, it grew on me something fierce :D

Yeah that's a good point. I got it wrong(use of the word parody).......and in that case maybe Punky Bruster Cooked on Phonics is the only real parody album he's done. SYL could be described as a parody of metal, although it is still original, groundbreaking and influential. Ziltoid definitely sounds like a parody of SYL at least.

Devin just got tired of being known as this guy.

As far as MBTI type is concerned, I always used to associated him with INTPness, though the E vs I is very hard to discern. He seems like a definite NT to me at least.

I have seen him live twice. The first time was in 06 at an Ozzfest date when SYL played at like 9:30 in the morning. It was by far my favorite performance of the day, and they had autoraph signings about an hour or two later. I didnt line up for an autograph but I did stand like fifteen feet away and notice that he was having a shit day or something. He wasnt even acknowledging people coming up to him for autographs, and seemed to be in his head the whole time.

The next time I saw him was last year in Los Angeles. He was in completely different spirits from last time, really energetic, happy, even took the time to acknowledge everyone and shake as many hands as possible. I was on two hits of acid for that show and he seemed really NT-ish to me. But, I have honestly never fully studied and read into MBTI too much, I've just kinda felt it out and let my Ne do much of the work.

Perhaps this video can reveal something about his type? www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwHAxjmIv6o

I think there's a tendency to identify yourself with people you admire, typing wise. :p

I'm not so sure he's an INTP, personally. I'm not saying he's Se either, but some innovative musicians I've really admired in the past have been Se doms. All I'm saying is I wouldn't say, 'because the music is abstract it's N', the real innovators of any type are a rarity, I wouldn't put it past the other functions sometimes. :p

Out-of-sequence interjection time.

Layers are definitely one of the key points of his work. He is also very good at combining many different techniques in particular ways which other artists do achieve, but never with as much regularity. For example, chorus, falsetto, disharmonies, off-beat tracks, etc. The latter half of Ki is a good example.

N, probably; P, probably; I, a controversial definitely from me. Introverts can act as extraverts if they have enough energy, and that's what I see in Devin.
But he could be Ti or Fi. People seem to think of him as INTP because he fits the old "eccentric scientist" stereotype. I think he is more likely to be INFP, his creative process seems more a case of him reaching something that sounds "right", if that makes sense. On the other hand, Opeths creative process comes across as Ti driven, as do other typical prog-ish bands.

Opeth's a bit different though, it's more impersonal, tighter, where as there seems to be more in the way of irrational elements to Devin's music and songwriting which I think would irk Ti dom (as his own creation.)

Yea I'm aware of this tendency. :D

When I first got MBTI I thought everyone(that I admired) was a freakin INTP.

My 3 favorite musicians are Devin, Steven Wilson, and Opeth. At one point I was convinced all three were INTP's, but over time I moved away from that. I'm still convinced one of them is an INTP at least, most likely Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth. This is based more on what Ive seen in his interviews than Opeth's music. The least likely out of the trio is Devin. A lot of people think Wilson is an INTP, but who knows.

Only one way to find out: https://twitter.com/dvntownsend

Who knows if he would even reply to such a question though. :phear:

Well he did say in a youtube video that Deconstruction is "based on Carl Jung and a cheeseburger" so maybe he does have in interest in typology.

Personally I have only heard him on the Rush tribute record and it seemed like he shat all over the song so I have not be very interested in checking out his other music. If this was uncharacteristic for him maybe I would give him another go.

I was lucky enough to see Devin in all of his glory live last night again(Epic Kings And Idols Tour with Katatonia). Had a great fuckin time! Honestly. I was able to by his new album Epicloud(delux edition with Epiclouder album) two weeks before it is officially released, so that ruled. Got some shirts, bought Katatonia's new disc(been too lazy to order it), and enjoyed myself for most of the night.

Show opened with Stolen Babies and Paradise Lost. SB was interesting, I had never heard them before. Female vocalist had quite a set of pipes on her. Paradise Lost just doesnt do it for me no matter how much I try. I stepped out for a beer and cig.

This was my 3rd time seeing Katatonia, and to me their live show keeps getting better each time(I think they are starting to make more money). They played 5 tracks off their new one, and I almost wished they played the whole thing. Wasn't that interested to hear older songs, because the new material has me hooked! See avatar. Just wish they'd get a live session keyboardist, instead of having the synths and layers on a backtrack.

The mighty Devin came next, This guy is really something else! He has a very strong stage presence and he really does put on a show. His banter and antics were hilarious as always. For example when they were playing "Where We Belong", a slow 80's type ballad, he screamed "LA is the fuckin cock rock capital of the world!" and right before his solo/guitar interlude he screams "Are you ready? Slash, eat my dick!!!" and wanks on his guitar. At that point Devin couldnt possibly be a bigger hero to me. This was my 3rd time seeing Dev live(SYL included) and this was by far my favorite show. If you are going to go, make sure you have a set of ear plugs handy, because he is fuckin loud live. Almost gone deaf twice at his shows now.

BTW Epicloud is UHHHHHMAAAAAZZZIIIINNG. It's a mix of elements from the last 4 DTP albums, but the songs are mostly all pop structure with poppy elements, and choruses and hooks that you wont get out of your head for a while. Dare I say it's one of his best yet.

You know, I've been thinking you are right about this one.

Uhhhhh, he can be. We go to shows a few times a year, mostly to please him, occasionally pays off. :D

Thanks for the warning with the ear plugs. Does he usually play an eclectic mix of his discography, or mostly the last few albums?

re. Epicloud. Sounds like a similar approach to Deconstruction. Is it as heavy? I remember someone saying that he was moving away from metal.

It hasn't even been released, you wouldn't download a car that hasn't been build yet would you?

(I've pre-ordered the vinyl. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but I'll be downloading it anyway)

Yeah I've been mulling over it for a while now. I think I prefer deconstruction but there are still a few gems in here.
