Hey INTP Forumers Id like for everybody to come up with all the greatest qualities that an INTP has that other types couldn't possibly bring to the table. Things that we can do, and the natural skills that we posses that make us incredible. Share stories about the INTP's unique talents and celebrate what it means to be the "I" the "N" the "T" and the "P". lol.

You just had to go there, didn't you?

The truth of the matter is that intps have no strengths. They are useless by nature. Any quality is surpassed by another type.

Actually, I am pretty good at maths.

Are you joking or are you serious? because if your joking then im laughing with you, but if your seriously saying that intps are useless by nature then your delusional, and im not saying that to be hurtful, im saying it because its true.

I made this thread with good intentions because id like for the intps to take the time to appreciate themselves and the other types to appreciate the intp as well. Its too bad that some people think talking about how great they are and what they have to offer suddenly makes them arrogant.

But thats only if you think intps are useless. ;)

Humility? I felt compelled to ask this after questioning the sincerity of my comments below. they really are true, but I don't wish to appear a part of the "ZOMG IMA NINJA" crowd. I'm not a ninja, I'm just relatively good at hiding/moving silently.

We are very good at hiding. Or at least, I am. It used to take people hours to find me in hide and seek (and still would I imagine) One time I was hiding and, had I not said anything, would have been stepped on. Another time, while airsofting, after the rest of my team was out, I managed to evade the enemy team for hours, before they finally called off looking for me. (shame I didn't use more hit and less run) Actually, I can't count the number of times they've called off games because I felt content to spend hours sneaking up on them instead of running around shooting everything that moves.

Some of my friends have even taken to calling me "sneaky bastard" (in a good way). There are other cases of me getting the drop on people, I remember startling at least one girl when she turned a corner and saw me walking (away from her) down a corridor.

So, Silent, Stealthy, and patient. might just be me though. I'd also like to add observant.

Basically whatever the Ti-Ne axis is good at. Oh, and I think INTPs are usually good at math, though Ti-Ne isn't necessarily inclusive of that.

This:

Natural Inclination towards patterns and logic BUT!!!!!!!! Natural Inclination =/= Ability. Interest =/= Talent.

"Smartness" is then based on probability. For example, I could say 50% of all INTP's are smart. But what does this show!?! Indefiniteness!!

Couldn't possibly bring to the table?

INTPs have their strengths, but I don't think there's anything so unique that an individual of some other type couldn't accomplish.

Thats my way of being funny/smug, other types can do what we do as well but for us these things just come more naturally.

INTPs are the Magikarps of the MBTI.

That... makes sense in my head. :kilroy:

From Wikipedia:

Magikarp (コイキング, Koikingu?, Koiking), known as the Fish Pokémon, is a reddish-orange, medium-sized fish.

Although this Pokémon is capable of surviving in even the most polluted ponds,[23] it is usually overlooked by trainers because it is pathetically weak.[24] Even in the heat of battle it will do nothing but flop around. They are normally seen using Splash, which is unusual, as it makes them easy targets to predators.[25]

It is not a strong swimmer, and currents in the water will sweep it downstream.[30]

In the anime, Magikarp has appeared several times, most notably as the subject of a running gag in which a salesman attempts to trick Team Rocket into buying Magikarp in various guises.

Another Magikarp, in Ya See We Want an Evolution, was nicknamed the strongest Magikarp. This Magikarp was unique in that it was in fact able to battle surprisingly well, even giving Pikachu a hard time.[34]

GamesRadar described it as "[t]he ultimate in useless Pokémon".

IGN called it "possibly the most docile, unassuming, and weak of all the monsters in the Pokémon world".[36] They further described it as serving solely as comic relief.

GameDaily named Magikarp as the fifth best Pokémon they would like to eat, noting that there are numerous recipes for fish.[38]

The intp's greatest strength is the ability to procrastinate. I realised this yesterday when it took me 6 hours to start an assignment which took 1 hour to complete.

How is procrastinating beneficial?

I can't speak for anybody except myself but procrastinating in solitude boosts my creativity.

About that Magicarp comparison, I think that Anthile was going more for the fact that it evolves into Gyarados. RAWR.

I, also, don't think that there are many qualities that other types "couldn't possibly bring to the table." However, one thing stands out to me: an INTP can easily reach a level of detachment that most of the other types would have a harder time reaching. This detachment seems to only be a strength in specific situations though. Analysis, important decisions, etc...

About the Magikarp thing...

Face it, overall we pretty much suck.

Sure, we're pretty smart. I'm sure we could form together to make one unbeatable Trivial Pursuit team. If ever we felt like it which...no, not happening.

At best we can be the intellectual/theoretical catalyst that some other type can use to produce some kind of practical application. In other words, we can think up all kinds of ideas but so often it's some other type that makes use of them.

Anyone here want to admit to that?

Agreed.
However, please do not use the word "strength". We are INTPs; we don't have strenghts and weaknesses, we have traits whose interdependences form our personalities.
And the most prominent of these traits are IMNSHO:
  • Detached observing
  • Abstraction and reduction of facts to principles
  • Pragmatic, progressive thinking → Social independence
  • Need for understanding and controlling oneself and one's surroundings → Ability of playing different roles
  • giving great importance to abstract, fictitious and/or possibly irrelevant concepts

Catalyst. Anyone read the Farseer Trilogy? The protagonist is often called a catalyst. He is never at the center of attention, but without him, very much would not have happened. I like the notion of not being perceived as a hero, but knowing, that you made a difference. But I guess it sucks, to never get any acknowledgement. :/

It's ok for you to say that YOU suck as an INTP, but dont assume that other INTP's are in any way shape or form similar to you. Your taking the entire typology understanding too far. Yes we are INTP's, but thats not all there is to us. Now personally anyone who ever bashes them self and other people like the way your doing just shows that you dont really respect yourself and you still need to mature to the point where you dont talk like some kind of doom sayer.

We are INTP's and we have certain attributes that make us unique and similar at the same time, but you as an individual should never limit yourself so completely to anything, that is very unwise, and limiting, because we can grow to higher levels, and theres many INTP's that have done this. Are they useless? do they suck? We shape the world with our thoughts, thats what makes us powerful, If you allow yourself to believe in such limiting beliefs about not only yourself but the rest of the INTP community then that shows something about your character.

Now I'm pretty sure that someone is going to say something along the lines of... Oh he was just joking, he wasn't serious, what he was trying to say was this or that... I dont find talking about oneself or others in a low opinion to ever be funny.

I think that under your guidance we would be able to make the best cheer-leading squad ever. I can see it already, you'd have us all lined up, IB with his tutu, me with my cane and the one-eyed ProxyAmenRa, all singing:

Give me an I!
Give me an N!
Give me a T!
Give me a P!

Give me a: "We're not the all singing, all dancing crap of the world"

No other type could ever bring that to the table.

INTP's are not like magikarps.

Both of you are completely missing the point. The point is that while Magikarp is one of the weakest pokemon of all, later on it becomes Gyarados, which is one of the most powerful pokemon.

Yes actually, I'm quite at peace with this, and I don't see what the problem is.

None of the types were meant to be able to take over the world alone, they all lean on other types to do the parts that they thrive in. There is nothing wrong with this.

I love creating theoretical models, and if that means teaming up with an ENTJ to help me implement them, so be it, there is no reason I should have to do everything alone.

I dont think anyone had any kind of problem with that. INTP's can definitely act as the the person in the back, not really making themselves known, but still doing his/her part, while at the same time getting help from other types.

The INTP however ( and any other type ) is not limited to just that one role, they can definitely move away from their comfort level and expose themselves to different stimuli and they can learn to like it too, and of course they dont have to do it all alone.

I noticed 2 grammatical errors in your reply Adymus, I did however fix them. lol.

Personally I didn't like the comparison to magikarp because when it evolves into gyarados it still seems weak and overly susceptible to lightning based attacks because somehow it becomes a flying pokemon as well as water. If I had to choose a Pokemon that captures the essence of the INTP it would have to be hands down Mewtwo. ( I dont care what anybody thinks, I'm sticking to this, lol )

Are we talking about the same Mewtwo from the movie? If that is the case then I have to ask:

If INTPs are Mewtwos then wtf are INTJs?

Dude, we're fucking psyducks and you know it.

I do agree with that second half, but I fail to see why that makes us suck. According to your logic, it seems like an INTP would think up something, and then some random person would come along and steal it (Keywords: Random and steal). This seems weird because normally I would think the idea the INTP thinks of would be shared with a trusted individual whom would go on to make a practical use of it and would of course let you share in the spoils, and by this, that would make you a very important part of an awesome Duo :D (and apparently that "random person" is telapathic or some shit, otherwise I don't know how in would be able to steal a thought right out of you FUCKING BRAIN!)
(please correct me if I misinterpreted your post)

Nah, Mew all the way, he definitely seemed more passive observerish and/or "chill" than his counter part. And besides, Mewtwo can be....well.....kind of a dick (What not with him pushing his worldview onto everybody else (hello Adymus ;)), But seriously, it was mainly his nub-fingers that were so un-INTPish...those things were fukkin weird :p)

Strengths always appear in some context. Are minds that can think up nuclear bombs, doomsday viruses and inventions resulting in over-population/ environmental trash really superior strengths?

Strengths/weaknesses grade possibly on a linear one-dimensional scale. Applying a one-dimensional rating to a complex organism is a questionable task. For example, top/bottom is a one-dimensional variable. What is the "top/bottom" of a basketball?

I, also, don't think that there are many qualities that other types "couldn't possibly bring to the table." However, one thing stands out to me: an INTP can easily reach a level of detachment that most of the other types would have a harder time reaching. This detachment seems to only be a strength in specific situations though. Analysis, important decisions, etc...
Detachment? Thinking untempered by a sense of worth results in useless randomness. That same thinking gets around mis-directed, ingrained, biased values of others.

This: Natural Inclination towards patterns and logic BUT!!!!!!!! Natural Inclination =/= Ability. Interest =/= Talent. "Smartness" is then based on probability. For example, I could say 50% of all INTP's are smart. But what does this show!?! Indefiniteness!!
INTPs are fond of thinking but don't have to be good at it. They can be critical complainers immersed in trivial and worthless things. Because they think they are more likely to develop it becoming good at it.

However, please do not use the word "strength". We are INTPs; we don't have strengths and weaknesses, we have traits whose interdependences form our personalities.

Basically whatever the Ti-Ne axis is good at.
The ability to think, to refine, to catch what is missing, to develop generalities that apply everywhere and to inspire are what makes man different from the rest of the animals. INTPs specialize in this.

Damn, only if people in my degree thought of me this way. Though, this is not the case. I somehow really screwed my interpersonal relationships in that sphere. At least outside of uni all is right.

Yes, the we suck part was a bit of a joke. If you can't laugh at yourself you don't deserve to laugh at all. If you take yourself too seriously then you are probably going to end up being one miserable SOB (at least to be around). Yes, that is just a generalization. You may not end up miserable but the odds are on my side I believe. Now take a moment to breathe deep and relax.

My only observance of INTPs are from the writings of the folks here over the last (almost) two years. We all seem to have lots of great ideas bouncing around in our heads but lack the means or motivation or ability to bring them to fruition. Ideas are where we are most valuable to society but we most often need someone else to actually make them reality.

You misunderstand me. I am definitely not saying that you cannot have fun, in fact I encourage it, but theres a line that you passed which I believe you shouldn't have. That line being self mockery and possible hurtful comments to other people. Yes I am aware that it was a joke but it is still not acceptable in my book to say such things. Just because I was serious about that doesnt mean I am miserable nor does it mean I will be. You are letting your Ne run wild with those comments. Plus I am almost always relaxed.

The types of people who get a kick out of talking crap about themselves or other people (however innocent or played down it may be) are usually insecure and are trying to get along with the crowd. Now I'm not saying you are, but you may come across that way to people. There are many ways you can crack a joke and have fun without resorting to any form of humiliation. You should never risk hurting someones feelings.

Think about this for a moment. Imagine if an INTP were to come to this thread, and they saw your comment saying INTP's suck. They may be offended. That is a possibility that you cannot ignore. Now does them being offended mean that they are taking themselves too seriously? I dont think so. In fact I dont think your taking your own actions seriously enough.

Now does them being offended mean that they are taking themselves too seriously? I dont think so. In fact I dont think your taking your own actions seriously enough.

That is your opinion.
Sir Logic. I like when you go for logic. However one look at IB's avatar and I have to ask whether I would take what he says literally. Even if someone means something literally, they have to be rather close to me for me to be offended. I would take note and see what else they say. It could be their style.

As for hurting other's feelings I think that is a risk we take every time we open our mouths, lol.

I won't deny that at all, a lot of what he advertises does make one think that he is a joker above all else, and that is totally ok with me, but there are different kinds of jokes that one can utilize to make amusement. I will tell you about 2 kinds. The first one is completely innocent and nearly impossible for someone to take offensively. The second is funny too, but it runs the risk of being offensive, some people may find its humor to be abrasive. If given a choice would you not choose the first one and spare ill will? What is there to gain from making a joke that is just as funny as the first one, but includes a gamble. Why risk the gamble on being perceived as ignorant/mean spirited?

You say that it can be the persons "style" to make those kinds of jokes, but there is also a risk factor in there as well. In order for his joke to come across effectively as planned, he needs to make sure that people can understand his style and therefore the people wont find his "style of joke" offensive. Where the risk comes in is simple, What if the person doesnt get his style and they get offended anyway?

You also say that you cant be offended unless the person is close, fine if its ok with you then you wont find it offensive. I assume many INTP's are thick skinned, but is it ok for him to assume they all are? There may be some INTP's who are more sensitive, so theres another factor of risk involved here as well.

All in all it just seems too risky, Id rather just make a light hearted joke instead.

As for hurting other's feelings I think that is a risk we take every time we open our mouths, lol.

It only becomes a risk when we choose to make it one.

Behind you, kicking you in the ass

No joke dude, get over yourself. Seriously.

Unless of course your response is a joke in which case it is fucking brilliant.

The self-loathing INTP versus the self-sufficient INTP.

For what it's worth I'm probably INxP and I can 'feel' that many of you underestimate yourselves, maybe you've had constant unsuccessful relationships with others, but that's not an indicator that you'll never have a positive relationship where you find yourself able to express yourself physically and mentally.

Also i'm beginning to wonder if a grin is an act of intimidation, but I figure it's not because if i give someone a death-stare that's more intimidating than a smile. Plus when I don't smile people are quick to remind me and I either tell them to fuck off or ask myself why I'm not smiling/ not happy.

Here are the strengths: You're intuitive, you can figure correct things out by yourself. I'd say 80-99% of people can't do this.

And since I'm a bitch for patterns I can't help but noticee I have 84/84/84 and then 53/47, that's spooky. What's not spooky but may explain why I don't behave like a typical INTP is because I have Kinesthetic (whatever that is) intelligence? I always compare with other signatures and I've never seen another INTP with it as a defining characteristic. I still don't fully understand what Multiple Intelligences signify but I'll keep the sig there until I do.

Risk and jokes and whether something is a joke or not is a major topic. Deserves its own new thread. I hope to be back later (busy today) to comment. Did you see posts by Irish Penguin? They jot purged. I could have made a joke about them but that would be a risk.

I will derail this thread one last time to talk about humor/jokes etc.

Logic you seem to be of the Ellen DeGeneres (sp?) school of thought. She doesn't like humor that might hurt someone's feelings too. It's certainly safe and unchallenging of social boundries. It is challenging in a way I suppose because being funny under such restrictions has to be difficult. It's also boring and I don't like restrictions.

I on the other hand like the in your face, to hell with politeness, nothing is off limits brand of humor. The best jokes are the ones that make you groan from discomfort right before you break down and laugh. It's like when some famous person dies and within hours there are jokes about it floating around. I love that.

If some joke I make hurts someone's feelings well that's too bad. What doesn't kill you will make you stronger so I'm just making you stronger. Of course if something I do say kills you then.....*chortle* that's even funnier!

Now if you look at my comments on this thread thus far, you may see that I wasn't being entirely denigrating of our type. I did highlight what I have seen by observation of others here over the last 20 months to be one of our greatest strengths. We have great ideas! I have however also observed that sometimes we (I include myself most certainly) do not follow through with many of them for various reasons. A little chiding on that can be a kick in the pants that has an outside chance of motivating someone to follow through. Even if it is for no other reason than to prove me wrong.

In a certain way you are right. This discussion with Inappropriate Behavior seems to be going off in a totally different direction, one which this thread was not meant to go into.

Did you see posts by Irish Penguin? They jot purged. I could have made a joke about them but that would be a risk.

To which posts made by Irish Penguin are you referring to? What do you mean by "they got purged" ? Your leaving me without much to work with, but it seems as though what your talking about is important. Fill me in on the details when you can.

I will be opening a new thread that discusses jokes and appropriateness, courtesy of BigApplePi's idea

Somewhat coming back to the thread topic:

First off I have to say on the pokemon thing, we are definitely Mew. Anyone notice how he just kinda watched for most of the movie? He went through observing everything and trying out little ideas by himself. (Like the thing with the windmill) He was strong when he needed to be and had his own view on what makes a pokemon powerful which was against the popular belief. I don't know I've always been a big Mew fan. :D

As for some strengths
-Wild imagination
-If developed right, we have the ability to see things very clearly

Actually now that I think about it, All of our strengths/weaknesses depend on our development.

Well ok, maybe Mewtwo is not the prime example of the INTP, I guess Mew isn't a bad choice though. Water under the bridge.

Are we talking about the same Mewtwo from the movie? If that is the case then I have to ask:

If INTPs are Mewtwos then wtf are INTJs?

Dude, we're fucking psyducks and you know it.
I laughed.

Before laughing, I also immediately thought of Mewtwo as an INTJ.

We're absent-minded ducks.
