Obviously this is subject to change and I'm sure a lot you would like to list way more than 5, but for simplicity sake lets try to keep it down to 5 or so. Feel free to add lyrics or specific songs or whatever you feel is significant. I assume there will be a huge variety of genres here but I could be wrong and am interested to know what you enjoy.

1. Amon Amarth- melodic death metal, viking inspired. If you are capable of kicking this much ass then you will love it. Song: Fate of Norns- so awesome, about the death of a young child followed by his burial and the implied suicide of the father.
2. Skinlab- groove metal, one of my oldest listening experiences. In your face, don't give a fuck slap to society. Song: Never Give In.
3. Offspring- great youth energy punk. Some songs are kinda pop'ish, but for the most part they got a good attitude on life. Song: several
4. Opeth- metal, really deep lyrics worth reading but at the same time very emotional and involved growling and song writing. No matter what you like I'd definitely think you will enjoy some of their music. Song: Blackwater Park
5. Orbital- electronic/techno. Great way to relax and I love the feeling behind their songs. Oldschool and awesome. Song: Deeper.

honorable mention: lamb of god- love their pure emotional intensity

Hmm 5 is a bit restrictive at my age

Patti Smith
“No, daddy, don't leave me here alone,
Take me up, daddy, to the belly of your ship,
Let the ship slide open and I'll go inside of it
Where you're not human, you are not human.”

Bob Dylan
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right

The Clash
'N' every gimmick hungry yob digging gold from rock 'n' roll
Grabs the mike to tell us he'll die before he's sold
But i believe in this-and it's been tested by research
That he who fucks nuns will later join the church

They have a great sound but there is zero diversity in their material. Damn shame.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. Seems pretty diverse to me, anyone noticing some patterns?

A lot of their songs, especially on the older albums can get very repetitive I'll agree.

In no particular order:

Nine Inch Nails: Love the mood created by many of NIN's songs. I can relate to alot of the feelings being expressed. There always seems to be a NIN song that currently feels like a theme song for me at any given time. Very innovative. Fav albums: Broken, The Downward Spiral, With_Teeth. Fav songs: The Becoming, Right Where It Belongs, Wish, Happiness In Slavery, etc...

Tool: Very unique and sometimes challenging. I love the depths of their music, both sonically and lyrically. Fav albums: Aenima, Lateralus. Fav songs: Schism, Aenema, Parabola, Forty Six & 2, etc... (see also: A Perfect Circle)

Alice in Chains: Love their vocal harmonies and their powerful, often dark songs. Fav albums: Dirt, Jar of Flies. Fav songs: Them Bones, Man in the Box, Am I Inside, Heaven Beside You, etc...

Katatonia: Very dark and moody. I love alot of their melodies. I should have some of their songs played at my funeral.....or better yet, wedding ;). Fav albums: Discouraged Ones, Last Fair Deal Gone Down, Viva Emptiness. Fav songs: Day, Quiet World, Nightmares By the Sea, I Am Nothing, etc...

Strapping Young Lad/Devin Townsend: Some awesomely genius stuff. I had to group them together so as to include both. Can be awesomely heavy or awesomely soft. Lyrically aggressive or soothing. Either way, it rocks. Very unique and weird, which is usually good. Fav albums: City, Alien, Terria, Ziltoid The Omniscient. Fav songs: Love?, Skeksis, Earth Day, Hyperdrive, etc...

Other considerations: Deftones, Black Sabbath, Opeth, Mastodon, Voivod...

Man, I feel bad leaving out some of my favorites... I guess I was focusing on newer material? Some old greats I love: King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa.

Great thread. I found Echoplex's tastes to be closest to mine. Anyways...

Bands (Off the Top of My Head):
Alice in Chains - Grunge

TOOL - Progressive Art Rock - Tool is absolutely amazing.

Nine Inch Nails - Experimental/Industrial - The lyrics always get me.

Radiohead - Experimental/Rock

Primus - No one knows what genre to call Primus. Funk Metal? Who knows.

I should also mention:

Cynic - Melodic Death Metal - Just because 'Integral Birth' is such an amazing song.

Matthew Good Band (He finally got help for being bipolar & depressed- I identify too closely for my own good.)
Concrete Blonde (The best band from the USA ever!)
The Tragically Hip (Gord Downie is the other of the two most intelligent writers alive, along with Matt Good.)
Junkhouse (anything)
Pink Floyd (specifically Wish You Were Here,Animals,Meddle and DSOTM,in that order )

It pains me to stop at five, when there are Radiohead, Live, Green Day, Jane's Addiction and Rush missing the cut!;)

I can only name an absolute #1 - Dir en grey. And I have a strange feeling their lead guitarist is an INTP... anyway, people either love them or hate them. It's sometimes embarrassing to be a part of the fanbase [oh god, I hate most of those people just by looking at them], but I try not to mingle with the fans too much. It doesn't change the fact that the band is awesome.

It's always hard for me to 'define' my taste by using a few artists, because it's diverse and very specific at the same time. BUT, since you are aware of this, I guess I can answer the remaining part of this question traditionally:

The final four [took me forever to pick]:

Onmyouza
Maximum the hormone
Tokyo Jihen
abingdon boys school

My 5 from favorite to fifth-favorite and my guesses as to their types:

Genesis - INxP. I bet Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett are Ts, while Tony Banks is an F. Phil Collins would be ENFx.

Underworld - INxP again. They make so many connections from seemingly disjointed lyrics and segue from song to song in ways that only make sense in their own little world.

Porcupine Tree - Claimed many times on this board to be INTP, which sounds very accurate.

Peter Gabriel - I can't imagine him not being an INTP. "Growing Up"'s lyrics ooze INTP.

BT - No clue here, actually. ENTJ? He's still technically brilliant regardless.

In no particular order

Rush (They got me into music in the first place and are absolutely brilliant musicians)
Tool (The artistic expressiveness, talent, and themes of this band never cease to amaze me)
Porcupine Tree (Musically, they're all about the groove, which I love. The lyrics can be very dark at times, but I still love it)
Dream Theater (What happens when you mix a Berklee education with a prog metal band?)
Dave Matthew's Band (Lessard is an awesome bass player, and I love both jazz and rock so these guys catch my attention)

ps. I think Porcupine Tree is a very INFP band. I don't know if Wilson (or whoever their lyricist is) is writing about his life growing up or just making it all up, but either way it seems to be quite emotional in a dark way. Definitely some Fi going on there.

pps. if you're one of the people who think DMB is just Dave Matthews (eg., you refer to the band in the third person as "him"), I will instantly ignore any musicial input you have to offer.

The lyrics are primarily F, but the music is definitely T - sort of F cream wrapped in a T pastry filling. Two things cloud my judgment: first, that I'm an INTP whose song lyrics go Fi more than the Fe they "should" go; and second, that the one INFP I know is my sister-in-law, who more often than not needs my INTJ wife to translate between us. Porcupine Tree's mood resonates deeply with me, whereas she doesn't even come close to the genre never mind the specific band.

And DMB has always been about Beauford/Lessard. They're the two truly irreplacable guys and wonders to behold.

Yea, I'd have to agree, the music itself does indeed resonate very well with both myself (intp) and my intp friend.

I could just as easily replace these with five others, it is so hard to pick... I don't know if they are particularly INTP, but they make me happy.
