Hello everyone ^^ I'm Sylzarra (or Syl) I found this site on google and was intrigued by the level of intelligence (and lack of netspeak) I found here. In addition, unlike many other forums I've seen , none of the posts look like they are products of the random poundings of some mindless subhuman creature. I look forward to learning about new things, and having stimulating discussions on here.

Hello, and welcome to here. Sounds like you'll fit right in.

-----

There's something weird about your post's formatting, though. It's not a big problem, and I've dealt with it before, but I'd like to avoid going through the same thing I went through with Cognisant, so please take my advice now instead of (like Cognisant) ignoring it for several weeks and continuing to post.

Go to this page:
http://www.intpforum.com/profile.php?do=editoptions
Find the section near the bottom titled "Message Editor Interface" and select "Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls". Then press the button at the bottom of the page labeled "Save Changes".

Yes. Absolutely yes. I hate net speak. I hate the 'o rly?' and all the other lazy changes that started infecting the language. Its fine to use it as a comment, but when an entire post is written in that garbage, I just lose all motivation to participate in the conversation.

That is not the even worst short coming in our society's communication. The absolute worst is the habit people have with using vulgar swears between every other word. Truly English vocabulary shrinks with every passing year.
Tell me, do you find your self defining even the most simple words for your peers?

Sounds like 1984. But yeah, small vocabularies and vulgar language really get on my nerves, and I end up judging people by it. No wonder I don't respect too many people...

I don't mind the use of netspeak unless its use was exaggerated.

But what I always dislike is people who think they are smarter/better than other people based on indication that are irrelevant to intelligence.

Salutations to you as well. ;)

Although the progression of language does interest me at times, looking at it now and what it seems to be heading towards just causes me depression. So for my own mental heath I'm not a philogist. Perhaps I could be called a lexophile but more accurately I'm a bibliophile.

I agree with both of you. Although i am aware that most of my peers are capable of exactly the same intelligence as me, I still do not feel that they are using it. Which is the most frustrating part because they have the ability to communicate coherently with out vulgarities, however for some reason refuse to use it. In turn this causes me to loose respect in them and I mostly ignore them if they attempt to speak to me.

I see no indication that you didn't, which means you almost certainly did.

Yay!

Welcome Slyzarra.

Thanks :D

I still wouldn't ignore you if you speak to me.

Why so judgmental ?

Well, what a great first impression.

What, you think you'll have trouble living up to expectations now? Was I too generous?

Okay, okay, Cognisant is actually a pretty good person. It's just that the formatting problems you had were really annoying. I mean, it would do things like specify a different text color for a line that was BLANK! And whenever I tried to quote one of your posts, I would have to remove formatting tags to make sure they didn't show up as text or mess with the color of my post. Pleh.

OK, rant over. Sorry. :p

Well I just would like to point out that my one mistake did not detract from my coherency what so ever. However I do concede that my judgmental behaviors harm me more than they help.

i don't know, maybe i am less intelligent, but i prefer posts that are direct and to the point. i think one thing that bothers me more then leet speak (and cursing doesn't bother me at all, since i do it myself) are long, drawn out posts that could be summed up in just a few short, concise sentences. its one thing to clarify points, but sometimes i see those walls of text and i can only stand to skim through them and hope somebodies comments about it gives me a clearer picture.

Awww, Agent Intellect, are you talking about me and Eloquent Bohemian by any chance? I just love EB's long and beautiful posts. Every line contains a deeply- considered point to be reflected upon. Well, maybe mine are more rambling. I'll try harder, but I'm not so keen on the chit chatty one-thought-per-post format.

Welcome Sylzarra. I'll keep my post short and sweet. Looks like you've already started up an interesting thread :)

the best way to get me to read it would be to randomly put my name in it, so when i'm skimming i come across it and go "hey, what did they just say about me?" then i'm forced to read the whole post.

i don't think its a matter of having one thought per post (although one thought per seperated paragraph is nice to avoid the solid wall-o-text) so much as just being direct (and maybe even blunt). i don't like the one liner posts myself (especially since most of them don't really add much to the conversation).

of course, if people stopped writing so much, i wouldn't have as much to read and keep myself busy with.

Welcome, Syl. Because of a lack of caffeine I've got a corresponding lack of wittiness. Good night. *Proceeds to sleep for the next 4 hours* (Actually it's daytime here but I'm not joking about having no coffee or tea)

I actually love rambles especially if they are thoughtful rambles filled with new ideas for me to ponder upon.

By the way does your screen name mean 'true demon' ? :phear:

I agree though, sometimes (especially when the idea isn't very interesting) conciseness is good. Although as I said before I love thoughtful rambles filled with new ideas.

No caffeine?!?! That's torture. Cruel and unusual punishment I say. Wherever you are start petitioning to your government about decent basic treatment of it's citizens. There are some things that everyone is entitled to by birth: Freedom of speech, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and the ability to easily acquire water and coffee.

Regarding nias name: Not exactly ;)

Regarding caffeine: I actually live without caffeine, never really drank it. But you know what? It doesn't seem to work with me. On some occasions i wanted to use the effect of it, for being very tired when needed to be awake, but it never worked...(Strangely though, foe example aspirin doesn'T work neither, and alcohol could be similarly, although i never really tried ;))

O.o Well you learn new things everyday I guess... And not exactly is an understatement. More like way totally off the mark. ^^ thank you for enlightening me :D the day has now become fulfilled.

No caffeine? Teach me your secret... I'd save thousands every year. Have you tried energy drinks? And alcohol is not fun especially for people who live in our heads like us. Its a debilitating feeling.

Well, i don't know any secret about it. Perhaps it is because i have a somewhat higher body-mass than normal people, so that the dose is too little. (Well, i am 192cm and some 130kg, hope you know metric units). So may be i just underdosed. But then, i am no medical expert. For some time i drank lots (like some liters per day) of black tee, which supposedly has with tee-ine similar effects, but that had no effect on me either.
I don't know, can't help you here  ;)

Seems you and I are exactly the same size. I had to do the conversions but yep, same size. A few decimal points different is all but that could just be the calculations.

I go through caffeine like a hot knife through butter. It takes an awful lot to have an effect though. Same with everything else.

The identical expression was utilized to convince Americans to build more multi-lane expressways to get to work faster.

That worked out well.

@Ogion: No secret :( I can't be saved form my coffee addiction... Oh well I am not quite sure I want to be saved *hugs coffee maker*. And it could be a low dose cause your like three times me. Hehe I'm gonna get trampled someday.

@INIFENISENESTJNJFPFJTPFJ: No, it's like decaffeinated coffee. It takes a god's gift like coffee and turns it into a lesser version.

@Inappropriate Behavior: thanks for the welcome :D your'e another person capable of trampling me... :phear:

Netspeak annihilates precision in language. That's too high a price for expediency.

In that post, you were just using long words to make a point, not actually for precision.

I do agree with the point you were trying to make, though.

well i think big words can make a conversation more enjoyable (depending on which side of the road your walking) but i think they should only be used when we are reading simply for entertaining purposes.

Hm? I think one should use the words one intends to use...If you think you have a reason for writing everything in abbreviations, then do that, if you want to use only complex words, do that too.

Reminds me of a phrase i read, it is in German, i will try to translate as well, but prehaps the essence of it gets lost...
Der immense Usus extraterritorialer Vokabeln in der germanistischen Linuguistik ist mit dezidiertem Fanatismus auf das Maximale zu reduzieren!
Hm, no i don't think i can make a similar play of words out of it in english, i may try to explain: The phrase says, that you should strongly object the use of foreign words in the science of your language(philology). But it says so by nearly only using exactly foreign words, words from latin which are available in the german language, but which are really not in your everydays language. My problem with translating this is, that many of these words you do have in your 'normal' english language, and so the unusualness of these words gets lost.

Been done. Something like it has, anyway. From your explanation, this is very similar to (if longer than) "Eschew obfuscation".

A late welcome to you Sylzarra. I sympathize with your experiences on other posts. I have tried to read these "random poundings" on other forums. When read out loud their "word salad" has a rather syncopated rhythm. Perhaps they are trying to communicate with us in a way we just don't understand. Don't be too judgmental with them, they may be intellegent after all. Oh wait I am being too cruel. Shit. Oh well.

As for the mindless ramblings that drone on and on in a pointless way and seem to make no point after all and repeatedly go on and on in a round about way for quite a while with no regaurd for grammar over and over again. Sentences interjected to make no sense. sentance after sentance with no breaks after before ideas and punctuation what is that. Ideas half stated and then dangle. Sentance question and well perhaps not? I know nothing about that.

Welcome again. Need tylenol?
