I've always chewed my pens, pencils, and anything else I have which is relatively disposable and wont break my teeth or poison me. It helps me concentrate on things. Is anyone else a prolific pen-chewer as well?

I chew on anything and everything that won't kill me. If I'm really stressed or concentrated on something and there's nothing around to chew, I'll gnaw on a knuckle.
But yeah, all my pens are mutilated; I have to make sure people know that when they ask to borrow them. :phear:

I don't chew on pens or pencils. That's naaaasty, not to mention it destroys the pens!

I *do* hold pens in my mouth a lot- especially when I need my hands to type. But It's a mouth-grip like a Lioness holding a cub in her mouth. All love, no chewing.

.... I feel naked when I don't leave the house with a pen in my pocket. What do you do when you think of something interesting? ... it seems like you're just tempting fate (and your memory :p).

I chew everything.

Metal, plastic, wood.

Caps from bottles, the metal things in soda cans, etc.

Yep. I consider pens to be a gourmet delicacy for some reason. Especially the ones with a soft and big cap, those are particularly yummy.

If you ever saw my handwriting, you would know that wouldn't work. Yeah, I've lost an idea here and again but for me, if the idea really seems good then I'll dwell on it long enough to store at least the basics of it in my memory. Also, I usually end up thinking up something else related to whatever I may forget. My life is like a crapshoot ;)

Am I really the only one who read "Do you chew penis?"?

No, I don't chew anything but I know some people who do and they are definitely no INTPs. However, I wonder what causes such behavior. Oral fixation?

I think it's some kind of mild-ish OCD behavior like fiddling with things, needing to have your hands occupied, etc to relieve some tension,or purely habitual.

I almost always have my pen/pencil in my mouth, but no chewing, like RT said.
*wide-eyed* Want baby lion baby.

I do constantly twirl my pen though. I'm slightly aware of the possibility that I could be annoying the hell out of everyone around me, but I can't stop. It's a nervous habit or something.

I never chewed pens, but I do hold them in my mouth. I do this with necklaces, spoons and keychains as well. Anything nice and metal and cold. And baby lions, of course. Yum. They taste like licorice.

I do chew my pens a bit, but I generally also hold them in my mouth more often, without chewing them.

I do bite my nails though... They're always really short 'cos of me chewing on them all the time

I prefer erasers(I have one in my mouth right now), they're squishier :] but pens work too.
If I'm not chewing something, I have to be tapping my foot or flipping a phone open and closed.

I read somewhere (sorry, cannot think of the source right now) that any fidgeting concentrated around the oral area indicates a sexual need.

Not pens...straws. Whenever I drink something with a straw, you can bet that I'll keep chewing it for a good fifteen minutes or so.

I used to do it ALL the time and it kept my pens safe but now I carry around a pen at work all the time and I often have to hand it over for customers to use. They don't enjoy chewed up pens. Instead, I chew on my lower lip now. Also, everybody at work takes long cylindrical objects away from me. Like rolled up posters or various dowels that we keep around. I have a need to twirl them and tap them on my shoe and hit things with them until it drives everybody mad :D

I don't chew pens or fiddle much, but I have got a habit of cracking my fingers, knuckles... and toes, when they're available.

Btw does anyone else wake up with their joints stiff?
The stiffness goes away once I've cracked them, but it does hurt a little.

My history teacher carries around this crappy student-made thing that I think was supposed to be a wooden golf club... Anyway, he uses it to bang on EVERYTHING to emphasize whatever he's saying, which would get annoying except he's such a silly man and dances around the classroom.

@Cog: Cracking those + my wrists is a "bad habit" of mine too.
And a robot, complaining of stiff joints? What are you, the tin man?

I don't chew pens, though I will frequently take them apart and assemble little contraptions with parts from multiple pens. It's kind of hard to explain; but in highschool I launched quite a few inkwells across the class like that. I have tendency to lose the coils as well, which effectively ruins the pen. :(

My favorite object to fiddle with is a pool cue, which I either spin or I try to recall old quarterstaff sets.

I try and crack my knuckles often, but they only crack occasionally. My wrists crack beautifully though.

I used to chew on pencils when I was in the elementary school, but the teacher did not approve this, so eventually all pencil chewers were trained out of this habit (and the eraser which some pencils had on their ends also did not help); I ended up doing almost like Adaire does - I take my pens apart, then put them together and then take them apart again...Well, the fun ensues when I have taken the pen apart and we have to begin writing.

A friend of mine chipped a tooth on a pen cap once, and I know a student who almost choked to death on a pen cap. So, I'm not a big fan of that.

As far as pens and pencils themselves--no. I don't chew on things except food, sometimes, if it's chewy.

I find the etymology of pencil rather fascinating, given how many people DO chew on them.

pencil artist's paint brush XIV; writing implement of black lead, chalk, etc.; set of convergent rays XVII; set of straight lines meeting in a point XIX. ME. pensel, -cel — OF. pincel (mod. pinceau):- Gallo-Rom. *pēnicellum, for L. pēnicillum paint brush, dim. of pēniculus brush, dim. of pēnis tail, PENIS; see -CULE.
Hence pencil vb. XVI.

I used to, for some reason when I nearly stopped writing completely and just used my comp, i stopped completely. Now I just hold the pen in my hand.
I guess the fact I chew gum might help to

I don't actively chew pens but I do put them in my mouth. If one isn't available and I'm sitting down or concentrated on something I'm usually fiddling around with my mouth in some sort of way. Like I'll kind of chew on my nails, not hard enough to break them, I more just play with my teeth... alternatively I'll tap on my teeth with my nails, though if I catch myself doing this I usually stop seeing as though it probably disturbs the people around me. I also bite the shit out of my lower lip, usually only if it's chapped with dry flakey skin available to rip off.
I don't like gum too much though

apparently skin-picking is an aspect of trichotillomania, though it can also/alternatively involve hair-pulling, which ive had a problem with since 5th grade.

huh, funny you should post that. I actually used to have a huge problem with hair pulling when I was younger, in 6th grade I would continuously pull out my eyelashes and most of my eyebrows. I had no idea it was an actual 'condition.' I still find myself doing it to a far lesser extent, usually exclusive to absent-mindedly plucking at the tiny hairs around my mouth with my nails.

i also read it as "do you chew penis"... bahahaha.

immaturity aside, i had a problem with chewing my pens pretty bad in the eighth/ninth grade... it did nothing at all for my already fucked-up, very spacious teeth.

but then i got them fixed, and now i wouldn't even think of ruining my precious pearly whites with something so silly. although i have noticed that when i get nervous i have to have some sort of oral fixation, whether its biting my nails, pens, whatever... but it doesn't last long, thank jesus.

I don't chew pens, no, but I do tend to... "rest" things on my lips. Bookmarks, when I'm reading, for instance, I usually hold them up to my mouth.

I bite the nails of my ring fingers and pinkies only.... Horrible skin picker, also. My dermatologist hates me for it.

Lost, after wandering irresponsibly away from the
I don't generally chew pencils: I don't like the taste or the feel of the paint on the pencil (although when I was in primary school or any class like Tech or Art when I mostly had a pencil in my hand, I did wind up chewing on them when my mind was otherwise occupied). Transparent plastic biros, though,I bit. I would put the pen in my mouth so it stuck out on both sides (like a dog with a bone) and bite down on them with just my canine teeth, so what I got were hairline cracks in the plastic casing radiating out from the little points where I'd bitten down. I could always tell if a pen was mine by those cracks.

When I have anything else in my hand, a pencil or another kind of pen or anything else, I rest it against the corner of my mouth. As for biting... I bite my nails a lot. And I bite the skin directly around the nails and fingertips. And I peel the skin off my lower lip. :slashnew: It hurts sometimes. I'm an idiot like that.

I also tend to bite my inner cheek.

I do, but I've got extenuating circumstances. The Ph.Ds have stuck several lumps of metal in my mouth, among them the MARA, an appliance whose chief purpose appears to be making it really easy to chew my inner cheeks to pulps. I guess it's also straightening my teeth or something.

I do this, and pick at scabs, and crack practically every bone in my body. I'm as bad as wolverine / the counter-part chick he fought in the movie who was always cracking her joints.

I'm on a 15-30 minute recharge for cracks, I think. My lips and inner cheek are constantly frayed, and my wounds never heal :(

All the time. My front teeth are misaligned and I can feel it. Chewing pens gives me the impression that maybe I can push my teeth back down to where they should be :-)
Wait, is there a consensus on the psychology behind this or what? Indicator of greater anxiety?

I rarely chew, but I do the mouth grip all the time. In fact I am doing it right now :p People make funny faces and don't pay attention because they can't help but be distracted by the pencil's motion while I speak....

Its unfortunate to have this habit and have many "art" classes... I've tasted the wrong ends of markers and paintbrushes too many times. Sharpies taste the worst... and the taste stays with you for too long
