And why?

Mine is geology. The attraction to geology was lots of field work. I am 100% sure I would hate life if stuck behind a desk all day. Admittedly, another attraction was that geology has less math than other fields...a subject which I'm average at best.
I'm minoring in a foreign language as well (since I'm interested in learning as many languages as I can anyway) - German.

Of course I seriously considered 1000000 different majors, but I won't go into that...it was mostly every other field of science, architecture, global studies, archaeology, political science, and even photography for a split second.

Honestly though, if I was a math whiz, I'd be majoring in physics.

Yep, I would die if I had to sit in a desk in a building with a desolate view and nothing to learn all day. Just busy work... What's the point?

I'm majoring in Astrooophysics and I love it. Minoring in Psychology.

I love that Douglas Adams quote by the way, I'm re-reading Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy right now! It's even more hillarious than I ever remembered.

*cough* I learn some of my best stuff behind the desk *cough*

Right now I only have an AS in Computer Networking Technologies.

Theoretical physics is INCREDIBLY interesting to me and I probably would have pursued it if I didn't have so many problems in my High School years. It is something I will continue to pursue as a hobby. I was good in math but I never went past Trig in school, if I remember correctly.

I am a bit torn between choosing something that would be more fulfilling or sticking with the experience/career that I already have. For the moment, IT seems much better for making a decent living financially and it isn't particularly hard for me, as long as I don't get burnt out.

Physic will probably be best for me to pursue as a hobby, advance my skills in math outside of school. I can learn on my own without plunking down $20k+ a year for it. If I end up proving good enough to make a living, then I will get the degree saying so.

If whatever future company I work for pays for college, it will be in Computer Science.

Yep. See I understand the theory behind physics. I can totally figure out why and how something happens. But once you put numbers in front of me I'm completely lost.
I'm actually really good at maths like geometry and trigonometry...I think b/c they have a more visual element than maths like algebra and calculus. But I agree...I could educate myself on physics better than a professor could. Yes, I'm a cynic about our educational system.

Alice, Hitchhiker's Guide is awesome! I LOVE Douglas Adams humor!

There are definitely some amazing professors out there, but there isn't anything that I could truly afford. A lot of universities are making a lot of their lectures and corusework open now anyway, so double-win!

I was in a similar position SweetLeaf, that I want to do a lot of field work and be able to appreciate life outside of the laboratory. I considered Geology, but I have taken too many math/biology/chemistry/physics classes at this point and would like to take advantage of that knowledge.

Oh yea, what I'm majoring in...well I started in Chemical Engineering and ended up not liking it, then wanted to do Biochemistry but my grades weren't good enough, so now I'm doing Molecular Biology with a Chemistry minor. I figure it's a pretty well rounded degree and will give me opportunity to work in labs and in the field.. so I guess I will be doing research of some sort..

Mathematics and Computer Science. It is the perfect culmination of everything nerdy and socially isolating. What more could a person want?

Oh wait... :(

Ultimately though, I'd like to work in the area of computer animation.

Architecture. No such thing as minors where I am. As to why I chose that, well I think I've ranted enough on the subject in this forum.

There are others?

When did this happen :phear:

Umm...everything.
:(

I Hear you... It's a disease, I say! Luckily enough I finally made a decision about what
I liked the best out of all of my choices. What are you good at, and what can see yourself doing later in life? Is there anything you're especially interested in? Is there anything that you're horrible at?

Those questions definitely helped me make a decision. In the end I had it narrowed down to either psych of astrophysics. I'm very interested in both, but I could never see myself as a counselor or researcher or teacher in psychology, so that choice was out.

With astrophysics, however, I can see myself teaching quite well. When you find something, it'll click into place.

I'm taking a double major in creative writing and philosophy. I've wanted to be a writer since I was 12 and I love arguing about philosophy.

However, I'm inherently a math nerd, so the analytical (doninant) part of my mind has latched onto my logic classes for sustenance. I might have to take a math class next year to keep from going crazy. :)

I am about to graduate with a B.S. in IT. I mostly did it because I have been working on computers for almost 7 years, and I find it extremely easy to find jobs and do well in this field. But it has gotten pretty stagnant, and I am not really challenged by any of it anymore.
I was making so much money over the past couple years before the economy took a downward turn that I bought a house and am getting married at the end of this summer, but now I'm starting to feel like it might be better to switch careers (good timing eh?:P)

Political Science ... Minor - Philosophy "Why?" hmm I like to understand government, and how society works in a political framework, and being a 5w4 sx/so .... i have radical ideals that should be implemented!! On a more practical note, I will most likely go to law school and practice Human rights law, or Teach constitutional law to morons who just want a large paycheck :(

I'm a general art major, heading for a BFA in graphic design. No minor required. I'm not exactly sure where I want to go with that, but I've been considering computer animation, multimedia art, or a job where I can design the credits for movies. I've always been fascinated by that kind of thing since I saw the end credits for the Incredibles. Technical, but utilizes my artistic tendencies.

Hi, I am new to the INTP forum. I know I am in the wrong thread, but who gives..
To make this post relevant, I guess I will state my college major, which is Mathematics. I am not really too sure if this major is right for me, because I am a freshman and have only been exposed to introductory courses, such as calculus... any other math majors out there? if so, shout out if you must..

This. (Although I'm so/sx.) Sadly, my school doesn't have minors, but I would definitely be doing a Philosophy minor if I could. I find 20th-century Continental philosophy absolutely fascinating, but certain branches of analytic are very interesting as well.

I may end up in the tech sector after school, though, so we'll see just how useful that poli-sci degree ends up being. :p

I'm a freshman music major, but since I haven't been able to figure out a possible career I could do with music that I would enjoy (teaching is absolutely out of the question for me), and since I'm finding that I'm enjoying music less since it's become something I'm tested and graded on, I'm thinking about switching to psychology or economics.

working on mechanical engineering. you can do anything (almost) with it. It's like the swiss army knife of science degrees.

The real reason I got into it was because I read this fantasy book about an engineer that made all kinds of grand weapons of war. I don't know if I would like that something I made was used with intent to kill. So I've switched my interests to energy.... but the black market is so appealing

I was a biology major with a chemistry minor. I was always fascinated by science in general as a child, so naturally I wanted to study my favorite discipline. Though if I could do it all again, I would probably go into programming or some other computer science with a minor in biology since I am a big tech geek :p.

I can only speculate as my mind changes weekly.

Maths, Sociology, Anthropolgy, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology are all being considered. Part of me feels compelled to study Law because it's something I'd "never do in a million years".

I may simply not go to university.

Same with me! I've already changed my course for next year once and I'm attempting to change again :slashnew: I think they'll dislike me alot.
I wanted to do psychology, then environmental sciences and now publishing media (I went from high grade stuff to very low grade stuff)

Music, performance major (violin). I'm not great at it, to tell the truth. I had a real talent for science and maths when I was young, but I never used to go to class and ended up dropping both. I was also good at art subjects and finished at the top of my class in high school graphic design, but for some reason I still chose music...

I wonder why people even bother studying philosophy. It's a dead field. Are you speculating to become a real philosopher? Because that's not going to happen. Studying philosophy is to philosophy what art history is to art. You'll make a wonderful museum tour guide but you'll never touch the paint and canvas.

You seem to be slightly confused.
Not all philosophers necessarily study the historical philosophers. Many concentrate on contemporary problems.
The reason why you would study other philosophers is to not only see their approach, but to examine the failings of their approaches.

That said, I prefer more concrete fields. The only philosophy I advocate is pan-critical rationalism.

Did my BS in Computer Science. Now will be starting a PhD in Theoretical Computer Science (Discrete and Computational Geometry for those interested)...

Would have liked to study philosophy/psychology as a side major but the faculty in my university sucked :(... Though I have studied a bit on my own so I guess thats fine.

a minor in Philosophy would fit

Philosophy of Mind and Philosophy of Language are not dead fields.
Therefore, Philosophy is not a dead field.

Biochemistry...because of Metal Gear Solid.

No, really - MGS has been a source of inspiration for me (sad as that sounds)...I really want to work in genetics. I'm also toying with the idea of doing a minor (or even a joint honours) in psychology, so I can study the whole nature/nurture thing in more detail.

That's cool. I totally love the sciences but I unfortunately, my mathematics is so horrible that I cannot stand the thought of surviving through physics as a major, even though I like astrophysics a lot ( otherwise ignoring the mathematics side of it which is practically all of it).

I'm not actually sure what I should aim for since most of my interests are rather dead end stuff. Like...philology? and Linguistics? Sociology? I think philosophy and psychology is pretty cool. Cognitive studies as well. Creative writing...and the list goes on and on.

My ideal one would be International Relations or Political Science though, preferably with some way to fit Linguistics into the list.

But I think I"ll just go for Law, simply for the practicality of it even though it is so difficult to get into...*hope hope*

I won't be in college for a few months yet, but I'm planning on being a Chemistry major with a minor or perhaps a double major in German. My ultimate goal is to attain a Ph.D, but I'm not exactly banking on such a thing even being viable in the future any time soon; things happen, after all.
