My 'top 5' is a tough call, because my favorite-favorites tend to change every other day, but for right now I'd put down Death Note, Soul Eater, Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, Keroro Gunso/Sgt. Frog, and... uh, DN Angel?

I'm also fond of Marchen Awakens Romance/MÄR, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (what I've seen of it anyway... need to pick it back up), Fullmetal Alchemist, Digimon (Tamers was the best :D) and probably more, but the guy next to me keeps looking over my shoulder and it's making it hard to concentrate.

I've been a Ranma 1/2 addict recently. It makes me laugh and is so adorable. It's like a vacation for my brain.

I think becoming addicted to Ranma 1/2 was a defining moment in my life. :D

Was it because you never thought you could get into such zaniness?

I can't believe I (of all people) never watched it before now. I've only just finished the first season and already the romantic tension is killing me. I'm not sure how I'll make it through another 4 seasons but I'm addicted. :o

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geei0G05BZ4 This is just a little something for Full Metal Alchemist fans out there if you don't already know about it.

Besides that, I am finally able to contribute to this thread. Although they aren't completed series yet, I really enjoy watching Eve no Jikan and Tytania. Well, at the moment anyways.

=P for all the Death note fans, I feel that i've got to add that the second season of the Anime is better if you just read the manga instead. It's got more backgroundy stuff, so it doesn't look like Nears making it us as he goes along, and, if you read it from the start, you get more L-ness too! (plus, it's free online!)

Yes, I am just typing this because i'm too lazy to work out how to subscribe to this thread otherwise.

Mainly because my favourite character's in there, if not for her, it would have only been an above average anime.
2. Cardcaptor Sakura
Novelty's sake.
3. Elfen Lied
For the love of cynicism and morbidness.
4. Gurren Lagann
GIGA DRILL BREAKERRRR

Death Note is simply far better than any other I have ever seen.

But I also like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Ranma ½, Gungrave & Full Metal Panic.

Lost, after wandering irresponsibly away from the
1) Fullmetal Alchemist
2) Wolf's Rain
3) Serial Experiments Lain
4) Grave of the Fireflies (Not one of my favorites, but I would consider it one of the best.)
...
5)Whisper of the Heart.

There I SAID it. I like a romance film.

...I haven't gotten a chance to see The Girl Who Leapt Through Time yet-- is it good?

I'm going to have to redo my top 5 list.

1) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - I love the quirky humor insane story line and Yuki Nagato :P.
2) Serial Experiments Lain - What the hell can I say? It's so symbolic, the blood in the shadows, the way several characters go insane... It's just awesome.
3) Elfen Lied - This made an INTP cry, the romance was simply amazing. And the ending.
4) School Days - I can't really define why I like this, mainly due to the ending, if you haven't seen it, watch it.
5) Chaos Head - Although this is on going, it's getting better and better every episode. It's insane, intense and dramatic.

Honorable mentions to Code Geass, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist. Samurai Champloo and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. EDIT: Oh and Gundams, from the beggining up to 00 :P.

i haven't watched anime for a while so i'm probably forgetting some really good one.

samurai champloo
slam dunk (if you liked it go read the manga it's a million times better)
escaflowne
cowboy bebop
kemono zume

there are a lot of other good ones though, i have a soft spot for dragon ball.
i'm surprised to see elfen lied come up though, i thought it was terrible!
hellsing introduced me to the manga, which is amazing, but the series is not so good. it's starts fine but when they made it there were only two volumes of the manga so they made up a really crappy ending. what is really good is the music, that's what i miss in the ovas, it's not the same without it.

Sailor Moon, Nana, Chobits, Azumanga Daioh, and Princess Resurrection. Those are really the only anime I'll ever watch.

I'm a shoujo girl, I know :p

Death Note
Inuyasha
Ranma 1/2
Blood+
Naruto (fun until a fight sequence lasts for 10 episodes)

I know of a couple of other animes, but I haven'twatched them enough to be able to pass judgement.

The following are in no particular order, but numbered anyway.

1. Bleach. I love the character design in general. I'm also fond of the setting.

2. Naruto. Despite the downsides (the filler, and scenes where certain characters act like idiots...), Naruto has some of the most epic battles I've ever seen. It is rare that an anime prompts me to cheer aloud.

3. Full Metal Alchemist. I like the basic concepts behind alchemy in this series: it hints at a complex system bound by laws, which appeals to me. I'm also fond of the homunculli.

4. Claymore. I like its grittiness.

5. Black Lagoon. I really like the contrast and relationship between Revy and Rock.

There is other anime that I like that didn't make the top five this time: Death Note, Mushishi, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Scrapped Princess, Fruits Basket, Hellsing, Fate Stay Night, Black Lagoon, Gunslinger Girls, Princess Mononoke, Kamichu, Basilisk, Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu, Lucky Star, and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

to whoever said that they like Ghost in the shell for its transhumanist themes then you should look in to reading Blame!

as to a top five list...I can't think of one now
but kino's journey would be on the list

There is some better things, than watching anime I think. As much as I have seen, they are all the same. It's two or more people hitting each other entire episode, only thing that differs is why.
Mostly it's because some evil dude suddenly starts killing everybody around, then a good guy comes and kills the evil one.
Another case - A 'good' guy kills 100 people just because someone raped his siter. Notice, that main hero is still treated as 'good'

However, I have to admit, that Anime often has great music in it. Especialy Gundam seed.

Well, I don't know, maybe I have seen too little of anime, but you get the point.

I haven't actually seen very many, but I'll answer anyway.
Crest of the Stars
Wolf's Rain
Ruroni Kenchin
Full Metal Alchemist
Ghost in the Shell

I suspect that there are plenty of others that I would very much enjoy, like Death Note, unfortunately I've never actually come across them on tv.
