It seems to me that will and love are certain possible results of our psychology. They are complex causalities which lead to certain resulting behaviors, just like hate, fear, religious inclinations, and all the other things humans do. However, I don't think either one, nor both together, serve to explain the general phenomenon of consciousness.
It seems to me that consciousness is mostly a question of degree of ability to take in and process information and, especially, to make judgments. A very universal definition of ‘life’ is something that senses and responds to its environment. Perception and Judgment can be seen as the more complex, nuanced evolution of this basic principle. The brain allows us to not only take in and store multiple kinds of information from the environment – visual, audio, olfactory, pressure, temperature, etc. – but it allows for sophisticated processing of this information. We can determine not only that there is the image of a human being in a mirror, but that it’s my self, and further, that the mirror is reflective and none of the images visible in it are actually there. In most cases, creatures like dogs or birds can’t comprehend these things, and it’s because they don’t have the mental processing power to do so.
Consciousness is often used synonymously with ‘awareness’, however, I think this isn’t accurate. Awareness, as far as I’ve come to understand, is the ability to confirm sense perception, but it doesn’t indicate an ability to understand what that sense perception might mean. The understanding of meaning is what consciousness does, as it is a higher, more complex form of mental processing.
