Why do so many INTPs like anime?

Not me. I don't see the appeal myself. Or is it my age? But what i'm curious to know is what got you into it in the first place & why do you think it is the testicles of the canis lupus familiaris.

now that's original :D
I don't watch anime myself, but I can see why other people like it. The animation is more realistic and beautiful than most cartoons, and the storylines are also more sophisticated.

i don't think it's an INTP thing. it's just a... thing.

i used to like it, because my brothers liked it, but now the only anime i find bearable is probably trigun. i still don't watch it though. i dunno, it bothers me.

If I had 8 tentacles I shouldn't need to commit rape! Just have 'em lined up outside your bedroom door and let the freak show begin!

I'm not a huge fan of anime but I can definitely see the appeal of it. A fantasy world where people have giant eyes and crazy hair. Loveofreason is spot on with escapism. Watching anime is a great way of escaping reality.

I've only watched two anime series so far, Dragon Ball and Cowboy Bebop. I love Dragon Ball because of the nostalgia it brings of watching it as kid after coming home from school. I love Cowboy Bebop because of its style, especially the music. Never before have I seen music play such a huge role in a series.

I'm not sure animé is specifically an INTP thing. I just think many INTPs, especially those on this site, are geeks, and geeks like animé.

As for me, I don't specifically like animé. If it's a good movie or TV series, I'll watch it regardless if it's animated or live-action, Japanese or otherwise.

Who would need someone else to watch? You could just use them to play with yourself.

On topic:

I think anime has great ideas and good storylines, but many of them the animation sort of bothers me, and a lot of them have some really annoying characters that I just can't get past.

Why does age have to do with it? Are you one of those that thinks anime is kiddie cartoons? If so, you are severely mistaken. There are lots of anime made specifically for adults, and I don't mean of the pornographic variety...

The animated nature of it gives way to interesting visuals that would be impossible in live-action unless you have excessive amounts of CG (which usually leads only to crap overhyped stuff). Surrealism and fantasy are extremely common since the medium lends itself nicely for that, and most themes are treated very differently than the all too tiresome western point of view... different takes on sexuality, love, religion, justice, life....

I used to watch tons of anime when I was a little kid, especially Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, and Dragon Ball Z. I watched DBZ religiously every day after school for a good 3 years until I just stopped watching anime altogether, for some reason. I just lost interest in the genre as a whole, though I will admit that Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop were/are pretty good, I just have never really seen them on TV anymore.

Like someone said eariler, it's probably not an INTP thing, just an N thing. Anime is strange and different, so it indulges the imagination in Intuitive types.

Personally, I find anime alright but not inherently amazing. I know some people who will fawn over anime simple because it's anime and not pay any attention to the artistic features. That bugs me. Enjoy something because its good, not because it caters to a specific group.

(BTW I like Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist. :) )

Well said.

The age question was rhetorical more than anything. But it does seem to me that the majority of those into anime, be they INTP, N, P or whatever, are of an age ranging from pre-teen to 30s. I have watched a few films (about 10 yrs ago one of our channels had a spate of them) & yes i enjoyed what i watched. And that should answer your question in that i know it's not all kiddie cartoons. Talking of the animated versus live action what is your opinion on the animated versus live versions of Death Note?

One needs to be careful with anime, it's too good, addictive even.

And on that note, why hasn't anyone mentioned mecha yet? :borg:

Perhaps. People like anime for different reasons; it depends on what these reasons are to see whether they would like what you describe. For me specifically, I don't think I would, because I like the beauty of anime. I'd like to see someone try and create a cartoon with visuals as beautiful as those in the works of Hayao Miyazaki. It's not impossible, but it wouldn't be the same.

Other than his works and those similar, I'm more into manga than anime. Unless the anime is based on a manga I like, I probably wouldn't go watch it. Sometimes you do want to take a break from the black and white and get a bit of motion, however. Also, fight scenes sometimes come across better in anime. =]

I don't like anime. I am not saying there wouldn't be any good stories in it, but i just can't get myself to watch it. I don't like any form of cartoon or similar animation for some reason. I prefer either real actors (or cgi resembling real humans, human proportions, like in computer games) or no graphical depiction at all, i.e. books. This in-between-thing that is anime, cartoons and co just destroys my imagination. I don't know why, and why real actors/photorealism doesn't but that's the way it is for me.
Added to that comes that i really dislike all that messed up Japanese stuff. From tentacle rape, over those little water drops over the eye that is supposed to show some 'emotion', the eyes, the tendency that all girls are basically 12year olds, to all the things that are supposed to be 'cool' (like big guns and giant swords, robots/mecha, super powers etc)(i don't like the american Superheroe genre either btw).
It's just my genuine reaction when i see such things. I don't really know why, i have no 'reason' for it. I prefer written fiction or real actors/photorealistic.

'Disclaimer': That does not mean btw that i were against Anime or would mock or flame people who like it. Everybodies taste is different, it'S not my place to tell other people what they should like or not.

My love of anime comes from its exceptional stories as compared to Western stuff. Having been a reader of fantasy and enjoyed all fantasy media for my entire life, picking up a new book (or starting a new show) is often for me done with a sigh of resignation because I don't expect anything particularly new or original.

Then, I watched my first anime - Death Note - and the story and presentation awed me. Aside from the story/presentation, the voice acting and music were far superior to any Western show/cartoon.

I'm not the kind of fanboy who considers anime itself to be the greatest medium ever - there's some real crap out there, and for whatever reason that crap is often held up as an example of great anime (Naruto).

For me, generally...I just like the aesthetic of traditional (and stop-motion, although there isn't much, if any, stop-motion anime) animation in general, so liking anime was a natural thing for me to wind up in. Good anime tends, in comparison to a lot of western shows (not just animated ones, but most of the ones I've seen) to have more involved and complex plots, more serious subject matter, and plain better storytelling, combined with an aesthetic that I like in the first place (like LoR, I have trouble getting into live-action movies or shows, and those CGI maquette-things are even worse. The only exception I can think of is the Hellboy movies... oh, yeah, so realistic ).

b4nd1t_one said:

Yeah! If it's not live-action, and isn't shown on NickJr, I probably have a good chance of liking it. (Even if it is shown on NickJr, I'm still liable to admire the execution, if it's interesting or well-done enough.) I recently came across a short film called The Cat Piano and it was AWESOME. It doesn't even have to look 'good' or 'polished' for me to like it: I like Don Hertzfeldt's stick figure shorts. I mean, I look at real people all day, why would I want to turn on the TV and look at *gasp!* more people! :p Not strictly a cartoon, but as soon as this week's paycheck clears I'm watching Fantastic Mr. Fox, and I'm eager to see what Princess and the Frog is like Disney used to be really good, in terms of story (even if they can't come up with their own) and in terms of technical execution: I'm hoping that Lasseter brings that back to the studio.

Definitely. I'm fond of some of Disney's movies as well.

I love fantasy worlds, they are so much better than reality. I watched Pokemon The Spell of Unown the other day, and if I could live in my own fantasy world like that- I would.

I usually find live-action boring. Except from series. They are so long that you get to know the characters. There's also more time for a intricate story.

To me (though I wouldn't call myself an expert on the subject) I'd have to say it's the style of entertainment possible, and avalible. Anime, as opposed to Live-action, is less limited. If an artist can draw it, it can be made, while in live-action, limitations are made by actor's ability, special effects capability, and general appeal. General appeal is what makes Anime more 'out there' if one could say. Live-action rarely wants to create something too 'out there' so as to not alienate viewers. Anime viewers are not as easily alienated, as they already know what they're getting into, more or less, and it's a much more focused group, as opposed to the broad audiences of live action.

Also, as opposed to western animation, Anime has less strings attached on it's audiences. With few exceptions, most western animation is designed for either comedy (Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Futurama), for children (superhero cartoons, Toy-based cartoons (GI Joe, Transformers, TMNT, Yugioh (don't even try saying that it's an anime... It's only that in art style, not in essence)), most cartoons in general), or a combination of both (Looney Tunes (though I'll admit it wasn't originally a kid's program, it's marketed as that now), Animaniacs, Spongebob Squarepants, Freakazoid). Anime is much easier to be made into a better storytelling medium, as it doesn't already have connotations that western animation has, of childish, or comedic, though anime can be that too...

Overall, Anime is alot better as a storytelling medium for INTP favored stories than Live action or western animation. I however subscribe to the ideal that any medium can be effective, if a) the story is good enough, and b) if the story telling devises are good enough

Yugioh (don't even try saying that it's an anime... It's only that in art style, not in essence))

Yugioh is an anime by every definition. It was animated/directed/written by the Japanese and based on a Japanese card game.

Now, the 4kids mutilation dub is another matter...

I've only seen a few series that I liked, but those few I really liked. Ghost in the Shell, Ergo Proxy and the first half of Death Note for example. I'm a sucker for cyber punk novels, and I think the more adult oriented anime pulls this genre off better than anything we have in the west.

...As far as comics are concerned, I generally agree with you. Scott McCloud, in his (entertainingly bizzare) afterword to the first Flight anthology, referred to the "metabolization of manga" that's recently taken place among a sizeable number of Western comic creators, and I like the result of that, as seen in print and in webcomics. Manga, in general, mainly because of its across-the-board black-and-white nib-pen aesthetic, seems very homogenised when compared to the titles on offer in the alternative comics/graphic novel subsection of the Western comics market. So Japanese animation I prefer to Western, generally, but I tend to like the right kind of Western comics over even titles like Death Note and FMA. They have an aesthetic quality and variation that manga generally doesn't.

I can see three possibilities in this: 1) You're attacking all anime bishonen, 2) you're actually trying to kill Sephiroth and 3) you're using this thread as a strategic tactic in the ongoing war against Melkor. If it's one, you have your work cut out for you and you'll need more spears than that. Two I don't really care about. Others have tried and failed: he's been around for over a decade at this point. And if it's three...

Count me in.

I absolutely despise anime, its one big cliche that too many people drool over. It always is stupid story lines, and seems like really bad acting. They all are drawn the same and they all have the same feeling that i just dont like.

I know, but I thought I'd stick that in. I don't really care at all where a particular work (movie, short film, book, comic, song) was made as long as I enjoy it and it's good, is what I kinda wanted to say, and good animation tends to be easier to find as anime; good comics tend to be found in the graphic novel section of a bookstore, rather than the manga.

I freaking hate 99.9 percent of it. There is just too much cute stuff in it. Also it makes me think of Japanese people has freaks. Either as having some freaky fetish or as desiring to be in constant conflict with little reason for said conflict. Take pokemon for instance, if someone sent their electric hamster to attack my dog, I would call the cops on them. That guy isnt a hero he is a dick.

Availability. Where else can you find teenagers involved in serious and adult-like environments? I do prefer real sci-fi, mystery shows but there aren't many where the protagonist is young. and just like everything else, animes have genres and are separated and categorized differently. i'm interested in mystery, and psychological ones btw.
