You have heard about the worldwide recession, right?

We went through one when I was in my early 20s, wasn't this severe but we did scare ourselves to death on oil and gas shortages. It's cyclical.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm having such a hard time finding a job. I've applied to at least 10 places and only 1 has responded only to give me an interview and tell me no when I was more than qualified for the job. I know that we're currently in a recession, but are there really that many people scurrying to find an entry level job?! I knew I should have stayed with the cashier job I hated to death... It's crazy. It was only last July that I got a job promptly on the first try. Why can't they just see how needy I am and take me?! Seriously, I don't know what I'd do if I can't scrape up enough money for college.

At least I'm not the only one and it's not just me being pathetic.

When I first began saving money for college the only job that I could find was titled "utility worker". My job was to collect all the shopping karts in front of a large store similar to Wal-Mart. My position has recently changed to GM clerk. I spend most of my time selling electronics, seasonal supplies, and school supplies. Lately, I have only been able to work for them on my breaks in between quarters at university and durring the summer. My position is supposed to be held for me for when school ends in June, but with the current economic situation I am nervous that I may be dropped.

I know a couple of people who just graduated with degrees in biochemistry that are having to work at McDonnalds to support themselves.

Reality check. You may have been joking. If you weren't: They don't care how needy YOU are, they're hiring on some other basis. Your needs have nothing to do with it. For them, it is very definitely not about you.

People who live in their own heads as much as we do need to have that pointed out to us more often, perhaps, than others. :)

Why don't you busk on the street. I've done that and am thinking of doing it again.

Seriously, I don't know what I'd do if I can't scrape up enough money for college.

I don't get what people mean by that, "getting money together for college". Do you have to pay your fees upfront in the US?

There's a deadline for the money. And there are also book fees, and other fees, not to mention living expenses. And no worries, Editor One. I was joking.

You can take out loans to pay for college usually, but if you have to qualify for the loans which is pretty easy unless you already have mountains of student loan debt. The loans are a bad deal if you can't actually get a job with the degree you're getting. It's kinda comical some of the degrees colleges sell.

Sly - Just keep at it, getting a job is a job now days. Just keep applying and trying until the economy turns. Luckily, I think the economy is in the process of turning. Though, I'm looking at the leading indicators, which doesn't mean the job market will pick up anytime soon.

Welcome to the SJ world. Since I went to a Grand college (Indian Institute of Technology), and since my software skills are extremely sharp, I didn't have trouble finding a job. But many other INTP students here (very capable ones at that) have had to face a difficult time finding a job.

All I will say to you is FIGHT. Fight for your own. Learn things on your own. A degree, if nothing else, is a Label. Most people get degrees exactly for that purpose - A label. We INTPs would mortify with shame at such a thought.

Most employers will indeed look for a good degree from a good institution before hiring people. But there are some who are willing to hire for talent rather than labels. They search for it in lesser known colleges (it is here that a slightly talented/enthusiastic person can blossom, primarily because of the lack of competition).

If you really want to do something, fight for yourself and make yourself learn. It isn't as necessary to get into a grand college rather than to develop yourself according to your interests. Even if it means having to work for demeaning jobs, do it. You'll probably feel even more compelled to learn.

Here's what Frank Zappa says:

"Drop out of school before your mind rots from exposure. Forget about the Senior Prom and go to the library and educate yourself if you've got any guts. Some of you like Pep rallies and plastic robots who tell you what to read.""

sell your plasma if you can. i make 300 a month. not live able but it helps

join the military. for job experience i would advise navy or air force. if you want to shoot people then join the army or marines. i would prefer the latter 2 but each to their own.

apply for a damn good scholarship. i just got an email from my university about a program that will pay most of your school expenses (tuition and books) as long as you intend to get a doctorate degree. if i had the GPA i would apply. perhaps your university has something like that.

Work is VERY difficult to find. I know you're frustrated. I strongly recommend that you don't do any thing illegal.

What are your options? Can you further your education?

I think I should start a stress club.

I've just read about something sort of directly related to your problem and the issue of unemployment in this country right now. I want to finish reading it before I will say much about it, but this accountant/investment advisor guy has basically predicted all kinds of bad for the U.S. dollar and economy in the scarily near future.

I've assumed that you are a U.S. citizen.

I'm finishing my 12th grade next year and I'm already stressing out about a job that I'll need to keep up my education.

What impresses me about this thread is so many people would like to work. They want jobs. They have a range of skills. AND there are so many jobs to be done. So much is wrong with the world that can be improved. People are willing to work to get things done.

What is wrong here? Is there a theoretical match of jobs to needs? What are the steps to create the linkage? There must be a clear chain. If we knew what the chain or chains were, then we could see where they are broken and know where to direct our energies to fix the situation. Or is the opposite true? Some peoples are so content they don't want jobs done. They don't care to create jobs. What is wrong with the distribution? What economistic theory knows the answers?

I'm not done reading through his stuff, but here's a link to his "basic" mesage.

http://www.stansberryresearch.com/pro/1011PSIENDVD/PPSIM167/PR

I know next to nothing about money really and have just very recently taken an interest in financial education. Still interesting.

Edit: His presentation is around 40 mins.... so yeah.

I've heard that stansberry may be a scammer, don't know if it's true or not. I do believe our financial system isn't doing so well at the moment. Way too much debt: http://www.usdebtclock.org/world-debt-clock.html . The countries making it into the news are the ones with the highest external debt:GDP, like Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain (sometimes know as PIIGS :P). The US isn't doing particularly good either. From what I've read a lot of economies are in a pretty big shithole right now (but the shit hasn't hit the fan quite yet).

On topic, I'm currently working as a pick-packer in a warehouse. Boring as but apparently I'm meant to work anywhere I can. Trying to think of different jobs that would suit my abilities and interests more, but have no confidence that I would be able to get past the job applications and requirements. Having completed a physics degree, I'm also sick to death of the education system. It's too much about memorising stuff given to you and regurgitating it out later on, and forgetting most of it once it's no longer required. This is supposed to help you to get jobs and be a more intelligent person of course :slashnew:

A lot of things. If you're American, next time you're in a supermarket/grocery store, ask yourself if everyone in the neighborhood REALLY buys everything in that store before it goes bad. You'll realize that the stores throw out about half of the food on their shelves. Why? Because it goes bad. How can they afford to do this? Huge prices. They'll make a profit regardless of whether they sell most of their products or not.

On top of that, a lot of people are just wasteful and stupid when it comes to a lot of things. They'll want to use styrofoam plates and cups because they "hate washing dishes." They'll buy expensive televisions when they're in debt because they're depressed and want more entertainment in their life. They'll buy crappy microwave TV dinners, sodas, ice cream, and chips and live off of them, and have constant digestion problems, lack of energy, and lack of motivation.

I've seen American families do this and still manage to have no idea why they're collapsing financially. Indeed I came from a family that behaved this way. I grew up with them. I had to eat these foods. I ended up skinny because I felt sick all the time and never ate. Any attempts to point out their terrible standards, or the terrible food they fed me, or the poor decisions they were making with their money would land me a few days or so of hard feelings. They didn't want to hear it, mister. After all, I didn't know what the fuck I was talking about, and they paid the bills.

Is there a theoretical match of jobs to needs? What are the steps to create the linkage? There must be a clear chain.

There is. The problem has never been on the part of the theorist or smart-guy, but rather, on the part of society for never following his plans correctly. Society doesn't seem to want to be uniformly educated, monied, and healthy. Too many of our philosophical values rely heavily on rejecting knowledge and truth for the sake of fleeting good feelings.

If we knew what the chain or chains were, then we could see where they are broken and know where to direct our energies to fix the situation.

The problem is a problem of lack of motivation mixed with lack of education mixed with a belligerence towards science in the masses.

It doesn't matter how much economists try to theorize what's wrong with the economy if they're not even gathering accurate data half the time. There's so many simple questions that can be asked of the research methods:

1. How can we predict the fluctuations of markets if so many businesses--big and small-- engage in corrupt practices that skew the forecasts?

2. How can we understand the ultimate nature of the interconnectivity between markets if certain important data and certain important markets are ignored simply because they're black markets:

* For example, Cannabis is a major cash crop in the United States. You'd just never know because it isn't taxed, the existence and exchange of so much of it goes unnoticed, and our government doesn't support enough proper research on it. Whether America is willing to admit it or not, many of the dollars of its proletarians goes towards purchasing this drug. Many small businesses are fronts for selling dro. It's just an example of one of many gaping holes in our economy. There are many other less-popular drugs people use, too. Each one of these drugs has an unregulated, largely-unresearched market, and a large audience of people who use them.

Or is the opposite true? Some peoples are so content they don't want jobs done. They don't care to create jobs. What is wrong with the distribution? What economistic theory knows the answers?

Theories are merely ideological instruments geared towards explaining a small section of reality. If people were more considerate and well-read, many of the problems would simply decrease in intensity.

What economist theory "knows the answers?"

I'd like to think all the different theories take different factors into account and that it's not a single theory or an ideology, but rather a human mind versed in many of them that "knows the answers."

The human minds with influence need to start treating different political and economic theories as just temporary tools for restoring equilibrium to society, to be used on different scales and in different durations, and not as permanent fix-alls. Making something into a law, with all its complicated documentation and bureaucratic nonsense, when it is only meant to be a temporary solution, undermines the flow of progress a lot.

You may have answered it, but seems to me you've given reasons why there ARE jobs, not why there aren't. Waste, people buying stuff they don't need, black markets ... those things provide jobs. Even crime. If you don't have basic necessities and have to steal, that provides jobs for law enforcement. If people need jobs because they spend their money on wasteful things, that's one thing, but there is still necessities.

If jobs are desired to pay for things not really needed, that is one thing, but what about things that are needed? Food, clothing and shelter are needed. I must be failing to ask the right question.

Thats a very interesting observation, I agree. There is a pretty big gap, and it is unclear to me how some secure jobs, and other worthy/enthusiastic individuals are unable to. Blows my mind.

Has anyone else encountered these personality surveys they give on a lot of low wage jobs?

I've been applying recently at various retail establishments, entry level pay by the hour jobs, (desperete myself) and many of the larger corporations have these mind fucking personality questionairs.

They are the sort of things I would expect from an intricate well paying job someone was applying for, something that a person really needed to be competet in specific ways for, but because it is for such low level positions it makes me wonder about whether huge corporations aren't trying to make people feel unworthy and grateful for the hand of employment, as opposed to the corporation being grateful that anyone is willing to work away their life for such meagar crumbs.

The other thing I noticed is that some of these surveys are witten as though they are directed at people with very low literacy, the grammar is ofter horrendous, and it is quite obvious if you answer in any way that makes you seem like an individual and not one who is utterly subserviant you will not be hired. Psycological games it seems.

Yeah, crazy aint it. I think I mentioned it in a post a few months ago. I think as INTPs its best 'not' to answer truthfully.

Example: Obviously they are looking for the outwardly friendly, brainlessly fashionistic/trendy, and sickly sweet voices. The very thing that makes me shudder each time I enter retail stores, avoid them while inside the store, and the very thing that makes me run out after transaction is complete.

Yeah, I've been trying to specify, where ever possible, that I would prefer to work in some dark back corner counting inventory or something. While at the same time lying through my teeth about how much self value I would feel in providing the cranky customer with a better shopping expierence.

It's our job to suck customer cock, and we don't do that all that often because 90% of customers are courteous to begin with. What is a pet peeve of mine is when arrogant customers come in, treat our greetings as rhetorical questions, give us "shut the fuck up" looks, and leave as quickly as they can rolling their eyes. Because, guess what, it's our job, and common courtesy doesn't kill anybody. I don't mean to bring in bad vibes nor make this personal. I'm not saying that this is you or anything, but I thought it was worth pointing out.

Back to the OP, yeah, shit's screwed up. There are definitely jobs to be done. There just isn't the money to go around creating jobs, at least not for private employers. Have you thought of internships? In the mean time, keep trying! Just remember that it's all a bunch of games. You just have to learn the rules. Do you have any family in other parts of the country where the economy may be better? If you do, that might also be an option.

I totally agree. If not for global warming we would not have had, here in europe, snowy days till mid spring. Now our government is terrible with anything but especially when they need to fund something. The job costs 50$ they fund it with 300$ which 250$ go into private pockets. When it's snowing season millions of litas(currency) just disappear. This probably causes some problems within the service industry which leads to sacking of people and because of this severe winter Lithuania will be in crisis for couple of more years. Fucking global warming.:storks:

In a third world country sperm counts for nothing it's just a quick scoop off the pavement so it's not a viable option.

Unfortunately you are coming of age in the 21st century Depression. The good news is it will get better. The bad news is we have about another 5-7 years to go.
