Which fictional character do you identify with / would you like to be?

This will sound strange, but I don't think I've ever read of a fictional character in which I really saw myself. Sure, I project aspects of myself onto anything - inanimate, imaginary, whatever - but no fictional character has really epitomised me.

There have been plenty of main characters I thought were really cool, or had an agreeing worldview with. But I never really identified with any of them.

That's the problem with not having enough INTP main characters in the world.

Lex Luthor, because I just love the gall of someone who's little more than a businessman being the nemesis of the neigh demi-god Superman, personally I believe he's completely misrepresented, a genius portrayed as a thug.
Vetinari, a very philosophical leader, one who recognises the ebb and flow of things, the consistency of chaos, imo he's not particularly brilliant or skilled, but he's wise and that’s what matters.

I love that show! Yuuko is so funny! I really liked the fox kid that was in one episode. His dad ran a soup shop or something like that.

As for my own:
I don't really have anyone I identify with but I learned a lot from Yuske Urameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho.

Yuske is a punk kid who gets in a lot of fights. He goes through the first 14 years of his life as a loner, known mostly for his fighting. Then one day, he gets hit by a car saving a kid's life. Spirit world was tripped up by this decision because he seemed like a heartless bastard. When offered a second chance he says "Nah, you said it yourself my life was pretty crappy, I think everyone will be a lot happier" but he's asked to wait until he has been to his own wake, where his mom cries like crazy. ("My mom will party all the time without worrying about where the hell I am") Kayko cries like crazy. ("Kayko can stop stressing about whether or not I'm at school") and 2 surprises, his principal not only scolds his teachers for being absolute assholes but says a few heartfelt words about how he could have made something out of Yuske and cries a little. Then a boy who was a rival to him Kuabara comes screaming "NO I WAS SUPPOSED TO BEAT YOU! YOU PUNK" (like the song Passive by A Perfect Circle) He finally gets a teacher who he has some respect for, makes great progress, and decides if he has to care about something, it will be the people who care about him. At one point he doesn't tell Kuabara about his teacher's death because he needed to deal with it himself.

I don't know if I necessarily want to BE him. In fact with the exception of doing pretty well in school, I am a lot like him. I guess that is the closest person I identify to. I identify with Mewtwo as well, mostly in his reflections on humans and not really thinking he fits into their world.

Who I'd like to be: Tyler Durdan (Fight Club), Genkai or Heie (Yu Yu Hakusho), Max (Maximum Ride but without the Fang romance.), My friend is writing a story, I kind of wish the gist of it would happen, I'd like to be my character from that little story, Percy Jackson (Olypian Series), Luke Garner (Shadow Children Series) Nick Andros (The Stand) Mew (Pokemon), The Cheshire Cat (Alice in Wonderland)

My problem is, I mostly identify with villains. I think that's because I have mostly an antagonistic and opposing point of view towards my surroundings.

If I had to pick one fictional character then, yeah, it would be him:

I think it'd be interesting to feed myself with emotions and "learning frustration", with added benefits of having an unimaginably long life(if you don't get sealed, caught, or killed). Dr. House, over the course of the many seasons I've watched him in... I've gradually come to realize that I am extremely similar to him in so many ways. The way I relate to my best friend, the way I treat other people, the drug abuse, the way he behaved in the psychiatrist appointments even. Those episodes where he was in the mental institute were downright creepy, mirror-like experiences, for me.

The way he treats patients is also extremely similar to the way I treat people I'm "helping". I often see it as more of a mental challenge that a matter of helping the person.

I also relate to Andy Kaufman, in the sense that I tend to provoke people for amusement and that most people just give up on trying to understand my sense of humour. Hm, I'm not exactly like him though, just a little bit of that awkward persona.

It's interesting that some of you can't find characters to relate with though.

I never identified with any characters. But I think it's partly because I have problems seeing myself from the outside, so I don't know who I would be similar to. I actually thought of making some sort of cartoon where I would draw myself and my reactions to different situations. That way I would get an impression on who I am, what I am like, what kind of personality I have.

I always identified with/wanted to be Link from "The Legend of Zelda," particularly Ocarina of Time.
When I first played that game, I was about 7, the same age as the character in the beginning. And here was this character who was lonely, picked on, enters the game crying in his room, and was virtually identical to me in physical appearance.
He then goes off, does extraordinary things, saves and improves the lives of those around him, and is revered throughout the whole country.
If that isn't a confidence booster and a role-model to have, I don't know what is.

If I could be any character though it would be The Doctor, hands down. But that is from a purely superficial point of view.

I'd have to say I'm similar to House from... House or Rock from Black Lagoon.
The characters I wish I was more like would be Samwise from Lord of the Rings; because in my opinion he shows a lot of qualities that a good friend would, from assaulting a tower full or orcs to save Frodo to willingly giving the ring back to Frodo. Or a more liberal version of Rorschach, just because he's a bad ass.

Dr. Gregory House. I relate to him very.. Very much. All from his thinking, feeling, humor, personality, beliefs, actions. It's very extreme, how much I can relate to the character.
I wouldn't want to be him. Because then, there wouldn't be a House for me to look up to.

On a second place. Rorshach (And I did watch the movie. But I read the novel and long time before, so don't think I'm just on the Watchmen-wagon)

I wouldn't want to be him either. But I can relate to him, his views, his beliefs and his actions (Besides the killing <_<)

Funny thing is, that even though Rorshach is an EXTREME righty. And House is Right-ish. I'm quite socialistic. But I do have some strong right opinions.

EDIT: Oh, and also Bruce Wayne/Batman in my opinion he is a more liberal version of Rorshach.
On a side note: I hate how people tend to think of him as just another superhero with cool gadgets.
He is in fact a very very dark person. His mind is not for kids, so to speak.

I think I most identify with emotionless characters, like Yuki Nagato from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumia. An intelligent, logical observer. A person who went through things that would have broken anyone else, or driven them insane, but persevered, and could do it all again countless times without so much as a frown. I wish I could find someone like her, actually. It's strange, but reading quietly would be so much more fun with someone else doing the same. Plus, I'm already thought of as a robot because of how emotionally distant I am, so maybe dating an actual robot wouldn't be so strange.


I think if I were to be a fictional character, I imagine I would be someone like Light from Death Note. A very smart individual, with endless possibilities, but disgusted and bored with the world so much that it's all worth throwing away in favor of an intellectually challenging conquest.

Very very true. I still think it depends on US. As I don't want relate to a shallow, unrefined and underdeveloped characters.

I kind of liked them. The story was nice, and I admit I enjoyed it =)
But I feel that most Japanese Anime or other media as games (Final Fantasy)
Is very exaggerated, melodramatic and shallow. It's all "KAAH" - "JAAH" - "I'm goin to kill you!" - "wah, he's dead" You when someones dead (doesn't even have to be THAT sad.. Maybe he lost his wallet)
And you see a silhouette of the characters face, the eye is shaking and a tear drops and sparkles in the red sun behind.. Really? Come on..
Or in Final Fantasy, take the newest. This Vanille. You see her for the first time and she does this 'happy shrug' and goes "NH" And turns her head sideways. Can't really explain it, I think you kno what I mean.

I just get very annoyed.


I like their humor though.

I can certainly relate to Dr. Kio Masada from This Alien Shore by C. S. Friedman. He is male and autistic, which I am not, but the chapters from his point of view are pretty compelling. If you haven't read that book, and you like science fiction, I recommend it. One of the worlds functions largely because their cultural code calls for everyone to respect everyone else's personality type. The author said some of the types are based on Jung, and others aren't, but I would certainly go visit the world she created.

@Dormouse, what don't you like about characters of your own gender? This is just curiosity, not an argument, because I agree that female characters are often written poorly, but I'd love your take on what is lacking.
