To dominate or to harmonize?

If you could only either be in harmony or to dominate, which one would you choose?

Gonna give you a hypothetical situation, though not sure how you deal with those. Read some posts, seems like you personalize it quite a bit.

Hypothetical situation: You play an MMORPG with a friend (or friends), for example WoW, Dungeon Defenders, Mu Online, whatever. The point is that you can ADVANCE in that game, by which I mean get items, get XP, etc.. Is just playing together enough for you, or would you want to dominate him (or them)? By dominate I mean to have a better character than them, even if it's just a little bit.

P.S. If you're not an INTP, mention your type.

WELL.... mmorpgs are much more fun if there are more people playing them. To 'dominate' the other players would be to get separated from them, and in the end just assisting them to get back to your level. I'd go with harmony.

Why?

Well what does this involve, if you're asking me whether I want more items/xp/etc and there's no penalty for saying yes, well then I have to take it for a lack of a reason not to, on the other hand if I have to work for this "dominance"', nah, I couldn't care less, then again I don't play these MMO games precisely because being the best at something so superfluous doesn't appeal to me.

If on the other hand if we're talking about something of importance to me, a skill I take pride in, then it would mean a lot to me to be the best at it out of the people I associate with, unless it was something I specifically want to share with them, it all comes down to my priorities I guess.

You don't have to help them afterwards, and there's always people equal to your level. if we're not talking about friends of course, if friends, you can stop playing with them.

Hypothetically.

That was directed to Proletar. For some reason I can't edit my post.

Cognisant

First, yes, you do have to work for it. Second, you're playing with your friends, I mean better than your friend or friends, not than the whole server.

I see, so if you care about it, you are gonna strive for dominance rather than harmony.

Dominance isn't the word I'd use, the sentiment is more about being specialized, if it's something I care about I want that thing to be my thing, I want to be that guy known for that thing, this dosen't make me better than anyone else indeed I want everyone else to have their things too that make them who they are, making them useful to me as mine thing makes me to them.

Changing the question when we don't get the answer we are looking for, are we?

If I'm playing with friends, I obviously wont stab them in the back to get more powerful. That is being a dick. I used to play world of warcraft and I dominated, thank you, but I didn't do it on the expense of my friends.

That WAS the question, you simply didn't get the details that to me are intuitively implicit.

What if it's miniscule (again as mentioned in the OP), maybe having 100m of gold while your friend has 50m? Or maybe upgrading your weapon to deal 2000 damage, while your friend deals 1500 (assuming 500 is not as small as it seems)?

The INTJ always give me some sort of headache. When I'm interacting with one, I just KNOW there will be dinner and some synchronized dancing before anything can be concluded. ;)

Alright then. If I didn't get THAT premise, there must be others I haven't gotten either. Just to clearify:

If I've got better gear than my friends, does that mean I chose to dominate, no matter how or why it happened? By contrast, is it automatically harmony if I have lesser gear than them? To me, that seems like domination as well, since domination and harmony are concepts that are mutually exclusive. If someone else is dominating, I by default can't be in harmony - and vice versa. Does that mean that harmony can't be achieved unless all advances stop completely?

Ouch. My poor head. :(

Now that is a headache, asking lots of wide-answer extra-deep questions when answering a simple question. Why do you need all those details? The main points were provided, use them. :storks:

I was gonna make it short, but that's pointless; besides, you already answered that you prefer harmony.

In a video game situation I tend to dominate in WoW I used to heal though so I guess I had to harmonize which I enjoyed, at the same time though I wanted to dominate other healers by outperforming them for fun but that's in a virtual reality. In our own reality harmony.

Perhaps no aspect of mind is more familiar or more puzzling than consciousness and our conscious experience of self and world. The problem of consciousness is arguably the central issue in current theorizing about the mind. Despite the lack of any agreed upon theory of consciousness, there is a widespread, if less than universal, consensus that an adequate account of mind requires a clear understanding of it and its place in nature. We need to understand both what consciousness is and how it relates to other, nonconscious, aspects of reality.

Well, I don't view having a better character as being dominant unless you have a better character for that specific purpose. Having a better character, in whatever game, I find tends to be more up the alley of someone who understands the system and how to take advantage of it. Some people may have such knowledge in order to, I suppose, subjugate other players, but I find that it's usually just someone who enjoys the game more or simply has more spare time for it. Dominance hasn't even entered my thoughts as a reason someone might master a system. Not in this context, anyhow.

This notion that all must be competitive or risk death is outmoded; the opposite is probably true. There are enough resources, especially with nitrogen fertilizers, such that nobody has to fear death by starvation provided they exert a modicum of effort and pragmatism. As I recall, Nietzsche made fun of and warned against this competitive slobbering with the tightrope walker's bravado in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Seriously, there is a scenario in which everyone puts in a little work, relaxes and sidesteps reptilian concerns. In some primitive societies, the denizens work less than five hours per day. It's only when people get greedy that you encounter problems. There are a lot of things that people could reasonably forgo, which aren't contributing to their happiness or survival anyway, to help this process along.

I always get excited when I see the word dominate in a sentence. :D
Uhm.
I suppose dominate.
It depends on the game though. Rpg style I prefer to harmonize, but if it's say a shooter or an rts I'll go so far as to kill my team mates if I must. Some games I'm happy to lose or share power, but other I can be a very sore loser. I think it's related less to personality and more to how you perceive your own skills/ the goal of the game, so it varies greatly.

Can I break the rules and say I prefer being dominated (wonders why he said that with Cog and Melkor in the thread)

But... it lets you improve faster and look to what you should be doing. If you are in harmony nobody is improving much... and if you are dominating it only improves your emotional state.

As for type I do not know whether I was then a INFP dreaming I was an INTP, or whether I am now a INTP, dreaming I am a INFP.

i just watched an alan watts lecture....

domination requires the upholding of a belief that the world is in some sort of constant struggle between good and evil. thats just bullshit...

if we realize that the inner darkness we use to judge and dehumanize our enemies with, resides within ourselves just as much... harmony becomes a viable solution, given an honest effort of commitment and understanding.

omg i havent slept in over 39 hours now.

This is one of my favorite sayings ,except, yes it may be too black and white. So you ask where are the shades of grey? You may also want to ask aside from shades of grey ALL of the possible colors in between or outside of black and white as well.

Are you talking about only games? Dominant and harmonic would imply very different things in other situations(relationships, workplace, business etc).

In an RPG I'd be focusing on improving my character and completing tasks, rather than idling around. In an FPS, I do like to be on top and can do free for all, but in a game like Battlefield teamwork makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

That's not how color blindness works.

Sssshhhhh. He might not know that!

My mate is colour blond. He still see's colours, just not the same as us. Different shades or in some cases completely different colours all together.

We are not, INTPs seem to take a concrete example and skip the wide topic altogether.

A common misconception.

Imagine a game of Jenga. What do you see? Do you see a tower or do you see the individual pieces of wood that it's built off? We INTP look at life as we play Jenga - we examine each piece one at a time to see which ones are fixed and which ones are not. We examine the big picture by scraping at the details, and if the details fit we can raise our views again. We see your question and what you mean, but if you ask us you will just recieve criticism. And that criticism is based on our molecular view of the subject. That's what Introverted Thinking is all about.

So what do I prefer? Harmony or domination? Well, that depends. What is harmony? What is domination? The choice means everything, so we examine it carefully. Domination really translates into not being better than others, but to take from them in one way or the other. Killing them or stealing their kills, whether they are allies or foes. On the other hand, harmony would be to do neither of those things. To not kill your enemies. So on the other hand, how can I choose harmony? With this criteria, I realise that I haven't been entirely harmonic myself. So how can I choose harmony? It's not a passive choice when you come to think of it, but on the other hand I'm not entirely dominating either.

So the question is false to begin with. That's what we've been trying to tell you.

The question is simple, the process to answering it includes over-thinking Proletar.

The second column is a pain to read for me, it contains rhetorical questions that I see as intuitively assumed instead of being asked. It's too much of examination you're doing. The question is simple.

I agree with Proletar. The question is simple for you, but for us we have to look at the details. Unless you have a poor understanding of the question you are asking. What is the point of this question? I would really appreciate a answer. If we can understand why you asked it maybe you will recieve better answers. Let us understand the question as you do.

You will get the answers that your question beg. You are bound to get big facts if you ask dull questions.

INTJs like to ask those kinds of questions.

It's the other way around, in competitive games it's natural to want to dominate, but in games where you don't have to do that, moreso playing with friends in a group.

INTP

I find my goal to be two-fold. Dominate and learn. I like learning very much and it may even have a connection with dominating or elevating my intellect above others but I think it is mostly because I find things I learn to be useful when new situations arrive that provide the same if not similar rules of logic that I am now familiar with. Another reason which is a more of an innate feeling, is to satisfy my curiosity.

The answer to the OP above is Harmony. I prefer harmony in order to encourage learning within myself. Dominating would only reflect myself outword and prevent me from changing and learning new things or ideas.

What I'm talking about is you playing coop with friends and trying to always have a better character than them while also not helping them out when say they need extra gold or you get a better item than yours for their class, to keep having a better character than theirs.

Where do you live?
I want to ask a slightly differently defined question that is quite similar to the OP.

What is personally the most important to you; good synergy and cooperation with teammates, or being the star player of your team?

What do you seek the most and what gives you the most satisfaction?

For anyone wanting to answer: please think twice before indulging in exuberant displays of ti-wankery of the sort that could be avoided if you just tried to understand the intent behind the question and thus its intended meaning.

An example of such ti-wankery could for example be to posit that the question claims a full or partial mutual exclusiveness of good synergy and cooperation and being the star player of one's team, which is not true, has never been stated and is also revealed to be entirely irrelevant to the question if one tries to comprehend it properly.

That's a waste of energy. The point is to make a good team. I make my character as effective as possible, for the sake of the group. I've always been more of a "I got your back!" Kind of guy, though.
