Do you think it's an addiction/can be? How often do you text a month? Are you for or against it?

I believe it can be an addiction, as I believe anything can cause one to establish a psychological dependency. I generally range between 300 to 600 texts a day, ranging 9,000 to 15,000 a month. I think it is a good thing, so long as it does not interfere with your daily life.

Probably less the 300, but more importantly; Dude, take fucking breather, you have all the time in the world to have your questions answered, you don't have to thread bomb us with them all at once.

I generally post 20-30 posts a day on forums I am active on. This is my norm. I'm just posting a few threads.

I really wanted to make a thread titled "How many threads is Kellhus gonna start tonight?"

Might you consider making one thread along the lines of "Hey everybody, answer all these questions for me!" followed by a long list of questions? You'd probably have more success that way.

That's ok, I'll just talk to Gopher instead. :)

Seriously though, do you really expect people to give even semi-well-thought-out responses to so many threads? It kind of distracts from the threads other people might want to post too.

I'm asking Gopher now.

I agree semi-well-thought-out are the very best you would expect. Also I can't find all the threads he has posted yet. because there are far to many.

I used to have one of those cell phones with a full keyboard. I could text like a madman with two hands. I ended up losing it and now I use my old one that takes three clicks to get to a letter. It is painful texting like this now, you just can not go back to old school texting after you have experienced the bliss of the full keyboard!

First option, less than 300, $5 a month for like 250, and I prolly use about 50 of those depending on the month.

 I have trouble even comprehending that many texts. Is this even close to normal for the general population? What are you texting about so much that you couldn't just call and have more effective communication? Does 300 to 600 texts a day not "interfere with your daily life?"

I'm at about 20 texts a month. I had about 50 one month and felt like I had texted too much. I generally just call for anything requiring more than 1 minute of typing.

Ya, I'd say addiction is a good word for this situation... seemingly.

I don't text, it's kinda outdated compared to mobile instant messaging, which I do a fair lot.

I loathe texting but it comes in handy at times. Mostly I just think it's awkward. I would mobile instant message if I had the money to afford a stupidly expensive phone. Someday these things will be cheaper though and the Fukyos of the world will be telling me I'm outdated again. :storks:

It actually works on any phone with internet(gprs and above) and java capabilities.(wiki)
And depending on your plan, it can be cheaper than texting. :p

My phone isn't really internet capable. That's how cheap it is. If I texted much it probably would be cheaper to have a better phone. As it is I've got a super cheap plan because I never actually use my phone ($30 a month). I have about 300 minutes a month which I use about 100 of. I'm allowed 100 texts a month without incurring any extra charges and I use around 10 to 20 of those.

Someday I'll get myself a smart phone but I'm certain it'll be way out of date by the time I can afford it. :D

Edit: Or at least one that's internet capable. It's kind of silly how old my phone is.

I tried using T9 awhile back and it seemed limited and clumsy, but you have spurred me to give it another shot... we'll see.

Kellhus, I suppose that the main reason I don't understand your approach to texting is because I view texting in a very basic and utilitarian way. Your approach, to me, almost seems... wasteful(not the right word, but the closest).

I dunno, I'm pretty old-fashioned when it comes to communication. I mean, yeah, I love talking to strangers online, but that's driven more by the fact that the internet offers a greater diversity of people without geographical constraints, than by any preference for the mode of communication itself. Really, for the most part I prefer talking to people in person. I like to use things like gestures, tone of voice, facial expressions, etc. -- all things missed with text. Plus, cell phones and the like make it far too easy for people to pester me. Ya know, in the good ole days you had to make quite an effort to bother/stalk someone. Nowadays, someone can bug me instantly in the comfort of their home, with little effort expended.

Also, call me an old fogey (not sure what that means actually; also I'm 23) but doesn't modern communication (facebook, texting, twitter, etc.) seem to give us too much of other people, all while not giving us enough of them? It's as if we get this fake techo-version of actual people*, which makes it seem as though we're constantly communicating with, essentially, no one. Is it fair to say this is a lonely generation, with thousands of friends?

* Yeah yeah, I realize my participation in a forum is exactly this. I still think I have a point though.

Also, texting is great for emergencies; I just don't like conversing that way and I wonder if people 100 years from now will even know how to talk (effectively, that is), that's all.

I don't text or carry a "working" cell phone. I allowed it to stop working since I never used it. But still carry it since I am paranoid of watches. I just can't get into something like this, if and when I decide to speak to someone, they will see me coming, and my words and thoughts feel dead when I put a harness on them, hell, how could I ever text a comment to anyone when all my posts which I keep as short as possible, always seem to be way to long, but they never tell enough... sigh... That is why when I decide to speak to someone, I try to place it in a reasonable time to where I have nearly 30mins to an hour to just speak, and ramble on, while listening also...:D. Also I have no desire to go along with the technological small talking done on texting. I just don't like small talk in any form.

I text when I need information. I don't really do the conversations via text thing. It's just...it seems like a really inefficient way to communicate to me: you can't see their facial expressions, you can't make gestures, and it's much harder to interpret tone. Besides, what meaningful thing can you convey in 160 characters? At least when you're posting on a forum there's still plenty of room to express something meaningful and have a decent conversation.

(EDIT: I just realized that echoplex said almost the exact same thing. Ha.)

I prefer talking to anyone I really want to talk to face to face. Plus something has bred in me a hatred of being constantly "in touch" and "connected" (I blame Ray Bradbury, personally). I don't even keep my phone on me half the time, so I might not even get a text until two days later. So if someone texts me "Sup?" or something of that nature...it becomes irrelevant by the time I get it.

Generally, the circumstances I'm under limit my ability to communicate with those I /would/ call. Most of the people I text use MSN messenger, whereas, they can text me from their computer, and it goes just like an IM conversation to them. This explains how my friends accommodate some of the numbers easily. On the other part, I'm a multi-tasker, and I hate inefficiency, especially with time. By texting, I can and often have 3-5 conversations going at the same time, rather than separating them all out and taking more time than what is necessary. I'm busy, and usually doing things throughout my day. I comment on what I am doing, ask for advice, query about my friends' days, shop, cook, clean, etc without actually being interrupted. I can reply at my leisure whenever I'm transitioning to another part or task.

I have sent zero texts my entire life. I don't know that I've ever owned a cell phone sophisticated enough to do texting. It's possible I have, but I never bothered to look into it. I've had no reason to. It helps to not have any friends.

Its not bad, i prefer texting as opposed to talking on the phone. In fact i would say calling someone is a less efficient way of communication. Like people mentioned above, you can carry multiple conversations, you dont have to worry about interupting someone, they can just answer back when they have time. You can avoid the stupid small talk and get right to the point. You dont text someone and have to ask them about their day or go through the drawn out greetings you would if you called someone.

As for the vocal tones and expressions that you could interpret over the phone or in real time, who cares. The only time i find it important to gauge things like that are when i think someone is lying, or when im trying to gauge someones mood. Which, when it comes down to it, i can both gauge someones mood and tell if they are lying through their choice of words in a text.

Other than that, it really doesnt matter, its more of a preferance thing. I actually dont care much about my phone, it is only important to me because it is the only way to keep in close contact with my girlfriend, and i am only defending texting because i do it so often. I end up with anywhere between 3 and 6 thousand every month. This is probably more than it would regularly be, since my computer has been down for a few months and i dont have Aim on my moms computer to talk to my girl, making texting pretty much all i have. It is unlimited on my phone so its not exactly wasteful.

Aside from all of that, its not like anyone prefers texting over talking to someone in real life, i think that is just something you guys are taking out of context...

I average about 6k a month, though I only text one person. It's the only way we can be in contact through most of the week, and we demand a lot of each other's attention. You could say I'm addicted, though I'm more addicted to this person than the act of texting; plus, I use my phone for pretty much everything. I went from some piece of crap tracphone to a really nice smart phone, with unlimited internet and things like that...I'm writing this post from my phone, as a matter of fact. ;)

I rarely text, though for once it worked for my benefit (I think I'm texting another INTP! :D), which would be the first one I've met in life. So I went from using 100 min. in a month to 100 min. in a day

I don't believe it's an addiction. I belive you have some issues Kellhus. Like you crave attention or something. 300-600 a day and all those threads people are talking about.
It's just way over the top.

To answer. I probably text less than 300 a month, sometimes but very rarely it'll go on the other side of 300. But I usually just call whatever person it is that I'm trying to contact. Too lazy to text. Unless it's someone I don't know very well, then I text. It get's so awkward when you call.

I'm not sure, but it's rather chilly.
I text around 12,000 a month. It does not interfere with my life at all. Whenever appropriate, I have the self control to just put the phone away. I text some two people in the morning, and just keep up a chat with them throughout the day. Though it isn't so much a "chat" as it is an ongoing discussion.

I text so much that I'm gonna get carpel in my thumb. But it keeps me from having to talk to people, and that's what matters. I probably send 10-15 a day, and maybe 30 on a heavy day. When my boo and I are in different cities, the amount goes up exponentially.

Y'all may think it's odd for an INTP to text so much, but when your life gets active enough, it's just another social crutch to keep you going.
