This movie looks very promising. I love Sherlock Holmes. The film seems to have a good mix of action, comedy, and mystery. I'm not too sure about the plot though. I hope I don't get disappointed. I like Robert D. Jr. too.

I can't wait to see this! Sherlock Holmes is one of my favourite book series'. But somehow, I have a sneaking suspicion I'll be disappointed. Rachel McAdams = Irene Adler doesn't go well with me...but here I am, basing judgement on appearances. Ah well. We'll have to wait and see.

I still need to read the books. This society of ours is making it easier and easier to put off reading anything. But chances are ill pick up one of the books eventually. Does any one know what book in the sires the movie is?

True, but chances are you read more actual material than anyone else in the history of mankind outside of the past 30 years. This forum for example.

I'm also pretty pumped for this movie. I'll let the critics deflate my enthusiasm before seeing it rather than try to manufacture the doubts myself. Is that lazy?

I have mixed feelings about this movie...on one hand, it is Sherlock Holmes - on the other hand, I don't like the vibe that I'm getting from the trailer. It does look like it'll be pretty cool, but whether or not it'll be Holmes is another matter (which will have to wait until it comes out...)

It does appear to be a significantly different direction than the traditional screen version of Holmes, but I'm not so sure that its so different from the books. The literary character was both an impressive bare-knuckle fighter and a cocaine and morphine addict. Basil Rathbone certainly didn't convey that to my memory.

Robert Downey Jr. was a big drug addict back in the day. I think he will play Holmes well. The fight scene looks thrilling.

Rachel McAdams has always been a great actress, imo. I think she is hawt.

The books did say that Holmes was good at fisticuffs, skilled with firearms and a drug addict, but the main reason I enjoyed reading them was because of they emphasized his mental prowess and not his physical capabilities (although they were still present). I'm all for alternative characterizations/angles, but I just don't know if it'll feel the same - there's no denying that a 19th Century Batman movie has the potential to be awesome, but would it be too far removed from the 'cerebral' Holmes, as he's been presented in the past? It obviously makes sense from a cinematic point of view (a movie adaptation of The Sign of the Four would be dead boring), but...I'm not sure how well it'll pan out - I guess we'll see in two weeks. It's sort of like Resident Evil 1/2/3/Code Veronica compared to RE4: all could be considered good games, but RE4 is "good" for vastly different reasons than the games preceding it.

For me, that's one of the problems... There's no doubt she's good at acting and is very pretty and hot, but Irene Adler has always been a 'classic beauty' in my mind. Very smart and cunning, lady-like, yet strong. Hopefully she'll be a brilliant Irene Adler and prove me wrong, though!

Jaico, I'm having the same worries. The trailer doesn't give off a classic Holmes feel. But who knows? A fresh take good. All I hope for is that they don't torture it and make Holmes too much of a mindless action hero that films seem to favour. :storks:

Jewish people.

Seriously, it's a big movie day for them as everything else is shut down. Other's who don't have big celebrations on X-mas do as well. I went one year, don't remember the film but I remember the eerie atmosphere of the ghost town surrounding the theater.

i'm not so sure about the movie. It seems overly "mystical" and action oriented for a sherlock holmes film.

I miss the old b/w who-dunnits. (no, i'm not that old. they used to air at like midnight on pbs and such)
but, those shows really did Holmes justice. a particular favorite was the adventure of the dancing men.

i will probably wait till it gets to the $3 theater before i see it. and then extol or decry it from there

Somehow, that's not what I think of when I think "victorian England".

I do think it might be awful, horrible, and oh God, no! (but I'll take it provided Watson doesn't look dumb. Gonna end up watching it, anyway.)

The movie itself was pretty good....however it certainly was not a classic Holmes. Once I stopped comparing it to the books and to the traditional screen version I was able to enjoy it much more. It had its good points but certainly was not what I expected it to be.
Overall I enjoyed it though. (don't exactly feel like going in-depth, just got back from the theater ^.^)

I saw this yesterday - was very witty.
Personally didn't mind the new take on Sherlock---but if you're a purist you won't be happy.

Not mystical at all...but I don't want to include a spoiler!

Just saw it today after the 3rd try. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Is Sherlock considered to be an INTP?

I don't watch enough movies, so they all seem great to me. I'm no critic.

But I can certainly vouch for entertainment value. :D
Upon viewing this movie, I exited the theater
a) In awe.
b) Wishing I had some sort of detecting skill
c) In love with Robert Downey Jr.

AWESOME.

Not to mention, I spent half of the movie trying to type Watson and Irene... Sherlock seems blatantly INTP in this portrayal. Which is funny because I'd always imagined him as more of an edgy INTJ. Or somesuch thing.
So, my vague estimates ragarding type amount to
Sherlock - INTP
Watson - INTJ (?)
Irene - ENTJ (?)
Mary - INFJ

Hmm. I seem to have wandered off topic. My heartfelt apologies.

So what was I saying? Oh right. Good movie. :o

Watson seemed more like a well polished ISTJ to me.

I also am in love with Robert Downey Jr. lol. But I fell in love with him from Iron Man.

Man, Holmes rocked. It was a great modernization of Holmes - Robert Downey Jr. did a fantastic job of transferring Holmes to a modern audience and to film from the books. He did seem to be a bit more willing to get his hands dirty/break social conventions instead of gaming them, but it was done in a way that still made the character feel like the novels; I really liked the numerous allusions to the cases that were sprinkled throughout the film. If you have the chance, I'd go see it with another person who's read the novels - between the two of you, I'd say you'd be able to figure everything out before Holmes' big exposition at the end.

And yes, that spoiler is a real spoiler :p.

A chemistry degree helps too, though ;). The theme of "magic" being replaced by science was also appreciated - the advent of science/the scientific method (as well as its potential for evil - Blackwood - and good - Holmes) set against the backdrop of the Victorian Era was a really neat theme, I thought. I can't wait for the sequel...

Sherlock is clearly an INTJ, noobs.

It even shows him getting overwhelmed by the Se of that restaurant. Not to mention they show him go into Ni, and then plan out his attacks with Te. They totally spell out his personality type for you.

I liked it

I am normally pretty hard on this sort of film but I liked it. Many of the block buster films these days feel like a bunch of scenes thrown together as a movie. GI Joe was an example. But for some reason this one didnt have too much of that feel and it kept my interest. I didnt feel like i was seeing pointless scene pieced together

Aren't Js supposed to keep some order ?
(I'm thinking of the total mess in Sherlock's Living quarters.)

Sherlock Holmes, according to the books, kept his tobacco in a slipper and documents nailed to the wall by a knife, piled documents all over the floor and seemingly had absolutely no structured way of keeping information. In Watson's eyes he seemed to dive into random piles of paper only to produce the exact paper they needed (which reminds me of how I organize). This somehow seems unfitting for INTJs. please correct me.

His room in the movie is a complete mess, objects all over, sleeping on the floor, a bathrobe, in tatters. Teapot left hanging over the fire and sketches for ideas left floating.

The overwhelming of senses in the restaurant may well stem from withdrawal as he did have a drug problem (cocaine, and periodically morphine. In the movie also he seemed to take extract of belladonna, originally used for eye surgery, which has the tendency to disorient the senses for a while after, making them extremely uncomfortable)

All in all I find the character likable, and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
Not at all far from the original, though somewhat different than what we usually imagine or portray. (Keep in mind that the original Holmes was described as very eccentric and "bohemian" with drug habits and zero interest in people)

With the overemphasis on action and choreographed fighting I'll probably be disappointed. It's hard for me to picture the Holmes I read about diving out a 3 story building headfirst to dodge a bullet
