So I just entered a little argument on the IRC about what I call "stupid fun" like having sex without being married, or at least ready to have a family...and smoking pot and taking other drugs, just because it feels good...

Opinions on this? What do other INTPs think about these types of activities? Do you engage in them? Do you not engage in them, but are not concerned about other people engaging in these activities? Or are you strictly against them, and are strictly against other people who are for these activities?

I'm the third kind of person.

Feel free to bitch at me. :)

(btw my views have absolutely nothing to do with religion...perhaps this thread should be moved then...

yeah. move it.)

I was the first kind of person. I say was because I've outgrown most of it but I do not discourage anyone who goes that path. I would advise to be careful. Draconian drug laws can ruin one's life and of course there is STDs to worry about.

Pot makes some people stupid but it has inspired creative genius in others.

You're equating sex before marriage with drug abuse? Seriously?

I suppose I'm for the first, since there is such a thing as birth-control, but firmly against doing illegal drugs. And smoking, because then it's not just your own health you can ruin.

On a slightly off-topic note, doesn't this have to do with philosophy (why move it)? Or is that me mis-interpreting the word philosophy?

What's wrong with sex before marriage? Sex is just an action. It can be dangerous. Eating fruit can be dangerous. Driving a car is much, much more dangerous. Leaving your house is dangerous, picking up a knife is dangerous. Everything is dangerous if you're stupid enough not to take precautions. There are no irresponsible actions, only irresponsible people. Society has the most absurd hang-up about sex. It's just genitals; rutting, thrusting, receiving - the only meaning it has is what you impose on it, the only consequences are those you allow to happen.
What's the difference between drug abuse and natural causes? 20 years and 80? Who cares? What about alcohol? Tobacco? Are they okay because the government makes money off them? Fatty foods? Chocolate? All drugs that exist purely for the purpose of pleasure - and tax revenue. And really, it's your own health. If you want to kill yourself, what better way? I'd go for poetry in motion if I were to commit suicide, but going out in a flash of hedonism might work for some people.
Why not do things "just because they feel good"? Is there a better reason to do anything - is there a reason to do something at all, in fact? We're all doing things because they feel good, all the time. We might think they feel bad, but we're enjoying making ourselves feel bad. There's a masochist in everyone that loves believing its actions are contributing to the survival of its genetic code, sadly mistaken, maladjusted to modernity.

I'm the second type. I engage in these things, but I don't try to peer pressure people into them- besides, most of my friends are good at standing up and saying "no", and I wouldn't ever want to force something on them. But when my friends come to me, asking to learn how to smoke weed, well I teach. Sex before marriage is fine by me.

I dunno. The basic principle here is that: These are all consensual. I am consenting to take drugs, my roommates are okay with having a tiny bit of pot smoke leak through my closed door, me & my partner are consenting to have sex. There are risks involved, but we're responsible enough to know what those risks are and to mitigate the risks. (Wear condoms. Use vaporizers, bongs or bubblers so less non-THC tar gets in our lungs. Smoke pot AFTER homework is done, unless it's a philosophy paper.)

But... I also think that kids in high school should avoid drugs. I don't have a lot of solid reasons for that (no one does), I just feel that having a drug-free HS learning experience is better.

Yeah, I dunno what else to say. FF should have sex while high.

I'm personally against it. It's irresponsible and can easily have big consequences I'd rather not deal with. However I certainly wouldn't hate someone for partaking in it.

It's only irresponsible if done irresponsibly. Having children is irresponsible if you don't know how to raise them. Drinking water is irresponsible if you don't know when to stop.

Are you saying only creative people smoke marijuana? Or that smoking marijuana only increases the creative abilities of creative people?

Weed affects different people differently. It helps some people be more creative. The same goes with certain other drugs like hallucinagenics. I famously redecorated my dorm room after an acid trip one time back in college. Most of the music of the 60s and 70s that is still listened to today was drug inspired.

Cocain on the other hand kills creativity. I know of nothing that was cocain induced that was any good.

I don't think personality type matters. It's a physiological reaction in people and that can vary from person to person.

If you try it once and don't create a masterpiece, that doesn't mean anything as it is a new experience and you won't know right away what to do with it. Occasional or frequent use can bring about several possible reactions. You feel stupid, smart, quiet, loud, talkative, creative, happy, depressed, laugh at anything and of course hungry as hell. There is also different types of weed that can alter your reaction to it. Complicated huh?

It's certainly possible once you come down from the high yes. You just never know going in how you will react. Some creative people absolutely hate it and others will swear by it. It's a crap shoot for someone who has never tried it.

I agree with Civilianjones that a person should wait until their brain fully develops which I believe isn't until around 20. A brain still in development can add to the uncertainty of the person's reaction.

I don't think simply pursuing pleasure is stupid in and of itself. Doing so without taking the right precautions is stupid. So is doing so when one knows they can't handle the effects.

I don't personally partake of these things, but that's not to say I wouldn't. However, I hope I would never do anything stupidly, lol. Ideally, yes, sex is better had with the safety net of full preparedness of any and all possible consequences, and someone who uses a drug to treat a condition will always have a better argument than someone just trying to "get high."

However, we are all trying to get high one way or another, and more often than not, it's the how I'm against as opposed to the what.

Marijuana is a great time. It gets me in a more thoughtful mood, though my memory becomes somewhat inconsistent to say the least. It's kind of a double-edged sword. In my experience, intuitive types react more favorably to marijuana than the sensory types. But every individual person responds differently to the drug. Music + marijuana = great afternoon/evening.

since everyone has focused on the sex/drugs side of the stupid fun question, I believe I'll chip in my 2c worth.

sex - for me, only when all eventualities are accepted by both of us. As for others, grass on the field play ball [LEGALLY!!!!] just don't try and drag me into it.

drugs - Are strictly a means to an end.
Hallucinogens seem to be an easy way to achieve conceptual creativity, I like a challenge and their effects are unstable thus making them for me almost a last resort.
Tranquilizers- ??? I'd use them on someone/thing else given the chance, shot out of a dart gun mind you, more fun. Stupid fun to be precise.
Alcohol - moderation, only enough to be polite in company as any more results in a sudden onset of moving floors and loud noises the next morning. But, given the chance i'd do drunken boxing.

Now, onto stupid fun. That means everything that follows the rule of cool and a few things that don't. Such as:

-Orange guns/paint ball/Orange Gun Paintball[see: painful]
-Tea towel fights, these are made of awesome and win.
-Being reckless[stupid fun] on motorised vehicles at any and every given opportunity.
-Candles. be careful kiddies. Painting over smoke damage is not nice, nor is explaining to siblings how their favourite furniture got damaged through a tile.
-Eskimo ear pulling competitions. definitely fun and labeled stupid by many.
-Quoting large blocks of films in public places with friends.[monty python, black adder, Billy Connolly et cetera]

and others that slip my mind for a mention here. So, priorities shift to shenanigans and merry making in my books.

I'm for it. How can anyone be against fun? Actually I don't do ex, even though I'm around people who are rolling all the time. I guess I still have that morality thing against anything harder than pot.

Being against sex before marriage and alcohol is an extremely puritanical viewpoint. I'm actually a little shocked that somebody seriously thinks this way in 2009.

The real world is a little more complicated than X is bad and Y is good. It's good to see shades of gray in everything. It's a good idea to set boundaries, but don't be too terribly critical of other people who don't share your point of view.

Seems like this is a touchy subject. Smoke pot and die? Really? That's like saying "drive to work and die" or "clean out your gutters and die". Driving to work has the higher odds of killing you. And what makes you think it is change for the better? Plenty of people have or do smoke pot. Many are very successful and creative people.

well, my personal reservations are to try and keep my system unaccustomed to it so that if the need calls I'll get my mitts on some angel dust and go out with a bang. kind of like a point of no return contingency plan, nasty stuff though. apparently it stops the neurotransmitters from firing so you don't feel pain, heard a guy took some robbed a chemist and ran 6 city blocks with about 20 bullets in him before he dropped dead.

like I said, fail-safe contingency. likely to never happen but entertaining to consider.

Aiiiiii, pretty serious out here.
Can't see how smoking pot once per month or two can be dangerous. I'm still alive and people who do it much often than I do are still healthy, normal and some of them much creative. And nobody's making anybody to do it.
And it's bigger chance you die in car accident than from using easy drugs. That can happen if you take other drugs. You don't die from marijuana and marijuana is not the path to heroin.
I don't wanna live my life that why and be careful about everything all the time. Especially think in terms 'it's going to do bad to our children'.

Is this really 2009?

Indeed, marihuana has never directly killed anybody, it's way less toxic than, for examlpe tobacco, which kills thousands of people evey year around the world. People need information about it, not fear, not hysteria. Each drug is different, some you will certainly want to avoid, others are quite benign.

I guess I'm the second kind that FF mentions, I choose not to do drugs right now, I give no guarantees of what I'll decide in some future stage of my life, but in any case I will most likely avoid highly addictive ones and anything that damages my precious neurons too much :p. I don't drink often, only when I go out with friends, even then I hardly ever get drunk. As for sex, as others said, if both want to do it and take the pertinent precautions then I don't see any reason whatsoever to not do it.

If you are a nice and interesting pot smoking person then great, let's have a tea and converse, if you are brain dead cocaine addict, then I will avoid you, if you try to break into my house and try to hurt me or my family to steal my stuff in order to buy your next fix then I'll fucking kill you (figuratively). Note that none of that has exclusively to do with drugs, you can be a nice person or scum with and without them.

Does this include drinking underage? I follow all rules that will protect the safety and health of other people, but not the ones that protect myself.

Sex - I don't think I'm mature enough for that yet. I have no issues with other people going at it.

Drugs - At the moment I am against drugs, simply because I don't want to get addicted.

Stupidity? Can you clarify? I do stupid things all the time. My plan is that if there is a God out there, I'm going to give him/her plenty of opportunities to kill me. If I survive by dumb luck I apparently am supposed to stay alive for a while. :)

Hrm... This thread worries me greatly... I'd like to say that I'm against the use of drugs for mere, it seems stupid to abuse the knowledge humanity has gained, (by which I mean important materials unimportant usage) and to mess with the bodies natural balance without good reason... BUT... I guess its all experience and perception... Alcohol is used to the same extent...maybe even caffine at a stretch... Its just all down to society and societal portraits... Hrm.

Opinions on this?

do as you please, just dont bug me with it.

What do other INTPs think about these types of activities?

i have been on too many legal drugs in my life and try to keep my body relatively pure. i wont even take painkillers if i can stand the pain. thus pot, speed, acid and all the other stuff i wont use, but have no problem with people using them. an exception to that are unnatural things like meth. in my unprofessional opinion the natural drugs would do less damage than the unnatural drugs.

sex in my opinion is a bit more complicated. it may be a basically physical act but its also a basic social act as well, unless you go solo.

sex should be relatively free, it is a hard one (oi! no joke intended). i find it easy to separate sex as pleasure out of love (and don't see its sanctity in relationships) but my opinion depends on mutual intentions. not rape or playing on their dedicatiion, but the vibe of friday night and lots of alcohol (contraception of course).

i am not the sort to prostitute myself...........i don't think, i wouldn't actually know neing a little too young..........

Personal story:
An uncle of mine married his cousin and had, with her, a child. That child was killed due to the fumes of Marijuana and various other drugs (I cannot recall which ones, at the moment.) Not much more to say on that.

Sex has consequences, regardless of what you do to "stay safe." These can manifest themselves in the form of emotions, a child, etc. I have seen many people find themselves in a position where responsibility came too soon in the form a child- their lives decreased significantly in terms of quality, one could say, but the children suffered the most, though they could not imagine it.

Doing something just for fun, living solely in the moment... perhaps the consequences are not so bad as many make them out to be. Regardless, personally, I am against these acts for the sole purpose of having fun, unless some maturity and forethought are put into it.

Nothing is good or bad, right or wrong, this is truly a question of morals and completely open to interpretation. There are actions and there are consequences.

Weliddryn said it better than I ever could have.

If you're going to partake in sexual intercourse you need to recognize what you're dealing with, most people will fail to observe that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Sex can be a catalyst that can invoke great revisions in an individuals lifestyle and if the individual is unprepared for all potential consequences, they could end up instigating suffering in more lives than they may have readily anticipated.
Even if you're using protection you should prepare yourself for all possible eventualities because should the protection fail it will be you who is responsible for another life.
Drugs are of lesser concern, they can be addictive, they are illegal, and they can mess with the body and mind, but used responsibly they will rarely cause distress to others.

That being said, I do not believe that these pursuits are "wrong". I believe they are at higher risk to cause problems. There are many out there who are capable enough to understand the risks and participate in these activities, but if anybody fails to comprehend this... it may be appropriate to escalate the propaganda of the activities being evil so as to save them from their own stupidity!:D:D:D (I'm partially joking about that last bit...)

Well... I'm kinda serious... I believe that deception can be a reasonable tactic when attempting to formulate a peaceful and unmalicious (stupid-free) environment.
But I haven't explored the possible results of this disinformation, so I'm not ready to entirely accept it.

Of course we could leave them to extirpate themselves and form our own idiot-free society!;):p

I find it can be an effective tactic, up to a point. It requires that the truth never be leaked out. Otherwise certain trusts are broken and the problem becomes exacerbated as the stupid will not only no longer believe the lies but will no longer believe the truth as well. Keeping secrets is hard in this day and age.

Agreed. Trust is the key to any successful relationship, be that leadership or friendship; and it becomes exceedingly significant to ensure that your fraudulence is not realized. When building a tower based on lies each part of that tower becomes critical to stability, so your entire existence becomes reliant on seemingly inconsequential pieces of information.

I would enjoy creating a system that could stabilize this, so as to be able to manipulate an incompetent herd into not harming itself. Lies are dangerous to tamper with and are considered wrong for that very reason, but they may be more useful than we could ever have realized.

Depends entirely on the person.
It is my opinion that any drug that alters the way you think will allow you for at least a brief time explore ways of thinking that usually are not open to you.
People have a tendency to become dogmatic in their thinking, confirmation bias and selective thinking can pigeonhole the way we view the world.
So to answer the question, yes it can.
That said I would imagine an alternate viewpoint is not an inherently good thing in all people.

I don't really care, smoke pot and die if you want.
Exaggerate much?
Can you cite a single example of anyone dying of pot use?
Just one will suffice.

Just don't teach it to our children, our future...somebody's.
I would not recommend pot to children anymore than I would hookers and gambling.

And also, DON'T tell me to try it, because I'll like it...I won't. I think of the consequences of my actions, and I'm happy just the way I am, thank you very much.

1. Sex- I am sort of against sex but not sex itself, i am just disgusted by how so many people are just so driven to have sex.. i can understand procreation since that just happens to be instinct but there has to be a line drawn between normal and just plain Fail. Also sex before marriage doesn't matter to me since i don't believe in marriage.

2- Drugs- I do smoke weed, and i do consider the consequences of my actions, but i also consider that any number of things could kill me. Everyone says there is a 50% chance or something like that to die from a smoking related disease... that takes almost a whole lifetime anyway.. sure there are a lot lower statistics to die from other causes, but you cant compare one statistic that takes 60-80 years to kill you to something that can kill you in an instant.

Weed is the only drug i do, and will be the only drug i ever do. (although i have drank and smoked cigarettes plenty for a bit, but now they more or less disgust me) any kind of coke, crack, meth, heroine, acid, mushrooms... any kind of pills (even simple things like tylonal, because they weaken your immune system) are all completely ridiculous to take/do.

As far as how weed itself affects me, when i am high it doesnt neccessarily change me, i am just more relaxed, even around people..where normally i would feel tense, i would be calm and able to think introvertedly. This in effect causes me to be more comfortable and social, more willing to go places and do things, where when im sober i tend to just want to be alone. And on the other hand, because of the fact it is illegal and the fact that im a wild animal INTP, i am really paranoid around people sometimes when i feel like they could cause me problems because of me being high. And really.. i dont smoke just because it feels good, i smoke because it fascinates me, i love the smell, the taste, the actual plant itself is one of the most beautiful plants i have ever seen, its also one of the only plants that can grow in almost any climate, there are different phenotypes of the weed plant that have different effects...pure amazing. Then the fact its illegal and im anti-government, makes me kind of rebelious.. its Bull that i cant smoke in peace while drunks are out starting fights and running over old ladies.

For anyone against weed, its the only drug that people dont get hurt over (sure people get killed for not paying drug dealers but that wouldnt happen if it were legal =/ ) Anything else, any hard drug, including alchohal.. changes people, and not for the better. So if you hate anything, hate those drugs not weed. When i smoke im not hurting anyone else and i dont care if you dont like to smoke, so why do you care if i do? dont be mean now..

And i want to add.. when i say i smoke weed..i mean every day, and i know people that have been smoking thier whole life just as much as i do now who had they not mentioned it to you, you would never be the wiser.. so you really cant compare all people who smoke weed, most potheads seem stupid since most people are stupid... although, the people you see who you would call "burnouts", probably did a lot more than smoke weed.

*smoke rolls out the window*

What was i talking about?

I don't smoke it, but I think weed should be legal. I also think vaporizers should be more common than shot glasses.

One of the most positive (and terrifying) experiences in my life came from Salvia. I'll do it again when I have a better outlook on life. I rarely drink. Clove cigarettes are enjoyable on occasion.

I think non-addictive drugs and safe sex are fine if you use them responsibly and consciously. Responsibility involves studying what you plan on doing and making sure you're not just doing it because you have to. Don't exchange fluids, small doses, safe sources, communication, safe environments, comfortable settings.. :)

ive heard both hilarious and terrifying stories relating to salvia.

i wouldnt be willing to try it though. you know what it does to your brain, right?

EDIT: okay, now that i finally have access to a computer proper (read: not a psp) i can now answer properly as well.

I dont have a problem with sex, and like it has been already said, if you're careless and dont use contraceptives, the consequences are your own fault. I had an opportunity to have sex once, and I easily could have taken it, but upon consultation with one of my best friends, he advised me not to do it because "itll ruin your reputaion, man. no one likes her." I ended up listening to him, and I have to say i do regret it, because I doubt I'll find someone else until college; or maybe not, because sex just isnt something I actively seek.

now for drugs. the first time i did weed was 14, and i have pretty much been doing it at the same average rate since then, which would be once every 1.5 months on average i suppose. its the only drug i do (or did, its been awhile) and while i would try and persuade people to try it if the dont want to, its largely recreational, and considering the unusual restraint i show about it, i doubt it's really gonna affect me at all in the long run.

I dont always do it "just because someone's got it" or because i can, and i really have to say i have no addiction whatsoever; this is because I do not associate it as a necessary factor to having a good time. when I'm on it, i usually speak every thought I have, and become incredibly laid back, as well as feeling "out of it" sometimes.

but dont by any means take me as a standard user. I'm the only person I know who seems to be able to control my usage while still keeping on it. everyone else I know has come to 2 conclusions: either they quit it, or it evolved into an addiction, and now they "need it" in some form. maybe I'm biologically predisposed not to develop a drug addiction, or maybe it's because I already have an addictive medium I have been using long before i knew anything about weed

Video Games are definitely my addiction. I love them so much, but I can get irrationally angry when playing, and when i'm not playing, all i think about is games. I havent played any games in like 6 months, and I definitely think my withdrawal symptoms are comparable to any addiction.

As for alcohol, i dont drink it. this isnt to say im against drinking it, its just that im not invited to any parties, and when your underage, thats pretty much the only place alcohol shows its face.

(I apologize if any of this is hard to read, as I am incredibly tired right now, and dont feel like rereading my post to make sure its all comprehensible; though i doubt i would be able to catch any errors anyways)

i would love to say im not addicted to marijuana, but i honestly cant tell. I do know that i dont "need" the drug itself, like a chemical addiction, but i do notice that when i don't smoke or dont have weed, i am normally in a just plain shitty mood. BUT.... this is hard for me to tell if it is caused by wanting the drug itself or if its just the way i naturally am when im sober..i do know im not exactly a very pleasent person..so hard to tell. /shrug

I do think people get addicted to weed, but like i mentioned for myself, i dont think anyone gets addicted to the drug itself, but rather they get addicted to the lifestyle. (this of course doesnt really apply to me since i dont exactly go out and party like your average user... i just sit at my house.. alone.. and get high..and think about shit. (one of my normal little things i drift off into thinking about is different ways to generate free energy.. funfun)
