I agree, Anthile.
I think one of the reasons for that is that there are no clear rules and so it is really up to each op him/herself to make a judgment about when to kick or ban someone. And of course the different ops have very different views on this.
Another problem was that the channel basically had as good as no moderating actions and none were necessary a good part of its first month(s?) and then slowly it changed and i think there was little adaption to the change.

In general i don't like rules very much either. But i think in this case some clear rules could be helpful for all sides. Of course this is just my opinion.

@Thaklaar: The situation regarding swearing is not as serious as you seem to perceive it.We're talking about jokes.I don't think you've ever been to the channel,(I might be wrong though)so your view of the channel is rather incomplete and possibly false in that case.

I've been in the channel, but not often. I've even talked to you briefly in there once. Cussing doesn't bug me per se. I work in an industrial facility and I, and most everyone around me, cuss like a sailor. It's just pointless, spammy stuff that bugs me. It could just be that I is old person shaking his cane at damn kids. I don't know. Really, no rules ought to be needed other than "Don't be a jerk." To my mind, that goes for life as well. It's just definitions of jerkitude seem to vary wildly.

As an introvert, chat rooms, especially new chat rooms, are difficult enough as it is. It's like showing up at a party where I don't know anyone very well. Tiring and draining, it is. Since this is a forum chock full of the introvertyest of introverts, I shouldn't think that my feelings are terribly unique (although maybe they are. I am a special, special flower after all.) Anyway, I've rambled enough. Sorry if I've offended anyone. Opinions were asked for, and if there's anything I've got a surplus of...

To be honest I don't really care about this at all, I never use the IRC and I usually don't respond to people who act like dicks.

I would say however that you have to act carefully here. INTPs are very sensitive to heavy handiness and if rules are imposed too strictly there will a great number of people leaving this forum.

I am not an intpforum irc user but I used irc a lot about 10 years ago and none of this is remotely new. It does seem that the chat is valued a lot by a group of people with a particular culture and it makes it very hard for new users to join in unless they want to join in that culture. Insults etc. are the way many irc channels operate in my experience.

but there seems to me to be a fairly simple solution. There is a flashchat function in the forum which is hardly ever used and while it clearly doesn't fulfil the requirements of the heavy duty chatters, it could certainly be adequate for the gentler, less intense, more interested in a serious group conversation type, could it not. Perhaps two distinct cultural norms could be generated and stickied so people were clear what was acceptable in each and also so people knew more of what to expect when they ventured in. If you haven't used irc/chat before it is pretty overwhelming.

I do think that the Channel should have rules, and the ops should kick once the standerds are breached intentionaly.

I have no issue with swearing and it also seems most people on this forum, and on the channel do not have a problem with swearing. Though if swearing were phroibited on the channel I am quite sure that people could learn many words in order to get their certain point across to other people without Swearing.

Insults, I think should not be allowed, there is a difference between critisisim and trying to be insulting in an argument or discussion, is there not? In my first few hours there was a most certain mix of hosility, though it may not have been serious I still think it should have taken place in risque. As Ogion and some otheres have said it will most likley drive away INTPs form the channel, though it could very well be a great place if standerds are set and moderators enforce them.

How, when, and could and perhaps these standerds be set and decided on and enforced?

I do know that this may not be contributing or helping with new ideas, but I see this almost as a vote in a poll.

Flashchat is laggy, sometimes buggy on my computer, and sometimes it uses enough of my system resources (and I have a pretty good computer) to noticeably slow down other applications. Not only is it bloated, it's also a knockoff of IRC with fewer features.

unfortunately, rules can't be enforced online the way they can be in real life. the only rule should be that people should act online how they would offline. i can only imagine a lot of people would be on the receiving end of numerous ass woopings (physically or otherwise) if they acted that way outside of the chat room.

I thought I would mention it, though, as these two locations are supposed to be one and the same in some way. There seems to be a hefty disparity between what is done on the forum and what is done in the forum's IRC channel.

Personally, I'm starting to think the flashchat could be the solution to the situation in that it can be the more peaceful and serene location. I'm not going to argue for it's technical abilities, but I suggest you give it a try. I didn't find anything disappointing about it.

I noticed Anthile is making an effort to be around in the room and I intend to be available in there when I have the time.

The immediate features I can think of with flashchat - it requires being a member of this forum to enter... and it doesn't allow identity assumption. (As far as I know).

I am with you here. The Flashchat has loads and loads of features.
I did some recherche. Our version of the Flashchat is v3.5.2 while the current version seems to be v5.0.7! Maybe this explains problems with newest browser and other performance issues.
The flashchat has the advantages that you don't have to maker yet another account. And there are no "invaders" from other channels.
