The test is part of a study (I believe) to know the characteristics of someone who does "reflective reasoning" when answering questions. The questions about the ball and bat, the lily pad and the machine and widget ones were trick questions.

The bat costs $1.05.
47 days for the lily pads to cover half of the lake.
5 minutes to produce 100 widgets using 100 machines.
Assuming directly on top of means physical contact, it is impossible to determine.

All pretty easy stuff.

Actually, the answer is Yes. Regardless of whether it's a new or old block there will still be a new one directly above an old one. If the middle one is new then it's directly above the old one at the bottom. If the middle one is old then the new one at the top is directly above it.

I didn't expect to have such a low conscientiousness percentage, ha. How is that possible to determine through this test anyways?

--- I've taken the Big Five (or Five Factor Model) many times, and these results seem extremely accurate. What I want to know is what the hell those "reflective" questions had to do with anything?

Actually, the answer is Yes. Regardless of whether it's a new or old block there will still be a new one directly above an old one. If the middle one is new then it's directly above the old one at the bottom. If the middle one is old then the new one at the top is directly above it.

It said there was an "empty" box on top and a "full" box on the bottom, with a middle box whose status is unknown. You are to determine if the box "directly on top" of the full box is empty or full. Hence, the middle box is "directly on top" of the full box. And the answer is that there is no way to determine what the status of the middle box is without more information.

The reflective questions were to see if a person follows their intuition more or if they question the intuitive answer that is in fact wrong.
Take for example the ball and bat question. If a bat and ball cost $1.10 together and the bat is $1.00 more than the ball, how much is the ball? Intuitively one would say the ball is 10 cents. Reflective reasoning would tell you there's something wrong about that answer.

I read an article that there was a study being done to see if a person who answered those questions either intuitively or reflectively correlates with a person's religious beliefs. They explained it that a person who got the questions wrong because they rely on their intuition may also rely on it to explain events to be the workings of God.

I thought the questions are interesting for an Intp to answer them because intps' use both intuition and thinking. I think they also tend to question their answers, and to reflect on them more.

...Huh.

"Neuroticism" and "openness" at equal percentages. How did they determine that openness was dominant?

No the ball is 5 cents. It was a trick question of sorts.

If they're $1.10 together and the bat is $1.00 more means the ball has to be 5 cents because $1.00 more than 5 cents is $1.05, plus the 5 cents =$1.10

If the ball was 10 cents, $1.00 more is $1.10. And $1.10 plus 10 cents for the ball is $1.20.

Your dominant "big five" personality trait is neuroticism.
You are likely to be emotionally reactive and vulnerable to stress. You are probably prone to interpret ordinary situations as being threatening and, if not careful, tend to treat minor frustrations as if they were hopeless difficulties.

Compared to others, when you undergo a negative emotional reaction it is likely to persist over time and might give the impression that you are often in a bad mood.

Openness is positively correlated to N, right? But wouldn't someone who uses intuition to answer the tests' questions (i.e. give the wrong answers to the "reflective questions") be more likely to be less open?

....

the only of the "trick" questions I got correct was the one about the lake and the lilies. But I questioned the answer 47 even, and put it down with trepidation, because the question did not specify whether the lake was covered to its very edges or if the lily pads overflowed its borders at 48 days.

Feel pretty silly about messing up the ball one. I guess it was too obvious.

The widgets and machines and five minutes one... I imagined the machines working in tandem! Like an assembly line, so of course if it takes five machines five minutes to complete all of their tasks to build five widgets then.. you know.

Neurotic, I really don't like the way they discribed it.
Nikola Tesla was undoubtedly neurotic, make of that what you will.

I scored insanely high on neurotic aswell (as many people here) and feel the discribtion is blehr. Judging from how they discribed my outcome, I feel like the test is pretty bad, as i don't think it's even close.

There are three blocks in a stack, where each of the blocks is either empty or full. The top block is empty, and the bottom one is full. The middle block is either empty or full.

Is there an empty block directly on top of a full block?
The answer is yes. There are only two cases, middle one is empty, in which case the bottom and middle one are empty on top of full. The middle one is full, in which case the top one is empty and the middle one is full.
The state of the middle block doesn't matter, the answer is yes regardless.

I'm baffled how they came to that conclusion. Was it randomly generated? Did they assume my answers were all lies? I'm one of the most easygoing people you'll ever know. This is baffling. Perhaps this is the real test, to see how people react to an obviously wrong result?

I put down the intuitive answers, even though I knew they were wrong. :slashnew:

Then I realised the answer to the first one, "DAMN!":D
The intuitive answers were correct.

100 machines doing the same job as five machines will have a higher output rate in the same amount of time. If something doubles in a day, and covers something in some number of days, then it would half cover it in that number of days -1. The "new" or "empty" box question required that the top kind of box would be on top of the bottom box, because the middle box could only be one of the two kinds already in the pile, and would be on top of the opposite kind or under the opposite kind. 1.05 + 5 is 1.10.

I think your problem was thinking the answer would not be intuitive.
