I am a big movie fan and wonder if INTP's tend to have similar tastes. I like all films but over the last few years I have had a really strong interest in non American films (they are called "foreign films" here in the US but I know you are not all from the US so they may not be "foreign" to you). I'd love to hear some suggestions. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Chanwook Park's vengeance trilogy - "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance"; "Oldboy"; "Lady Vengeance" - these are nothing short of amazing! you'll think twice about revenge after seeing them
  • Takashi Miike's "Audition" and "Ichi the Killer" - Not for the faint of heart - Be warned: Ichi is frequently considered one of the sickest movies ever made, but it is the only movie I've seen that portrays a pure Masochist vs. a pure Sadist - Shouldn't they fit like hand and glove?
  • "Kairo" - ('Pulse' in English) - this is a slow burn of a movie that for some reason really haunted me even though it didn't entirely make sense
  • "Memories of Murder" - What did the ending mean?
  • "Life is Beautiful" - very tough for me as a father
  • "Suicide Club" - bizarre amd fascinating
  • "Uzamaki" - ('Spiral' in English) - I loved this film! A truly odd and creepy piece of work
  • "The Devil's Backbone" The movie that intoduced me to Guillermo Del Toro
  • "Suspiria" - Dario Argento's best work in my opinion - creepy with dark fairy tale elements to it
  • "Shaun of the Dead" - One of my all time favorites!
  • "Battle Royale" - Now that is how you play king of the hill!
  • "Nightwatch" - Cool stuff - I didn't like "Day Watch" as much though. The third part will be an American movie which is a travesty
  • "The Wicker Man" - The original UK version - not the remake. An interesting look at a pagan culture
  • "Irreversible" - One of the hardest movies I have sat through - almost unwatchable at moments, but I found it ultimately rewarding in a very tragic way - WARNING: NOT ONE FOR THE KIDS! (like any of these are!)
  • "Seven Samarai" - A true classic by any standard
Those are some stand outs to me. i guess I have twisted tastes. I am always looking for new titles that I have never seen. Any suggestions?

Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain c'est magnifique! My favourite movie.

I also enjoyed 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, which are British. The end of 28 Weeks Later implied a 28 Months Later, and I'm keen to see if the producers have done their research properly (the disease would have great difficulty passing desolate regions).

Was Brazil American? British director, anyway. I love that film.

I'm a Kurosawa fan. Seven Samurai is one of my favorites. (Magnificent Seven, however, is not. When people claim to love it they lose a great deal of my appreciation)

I've seen a few of the old Nouvelle Vague movies. They were interesting in cinema language terms.

And well, I know this is a (brit) TV movie, but has anyone watched Ray Winstone's Sweeney Todd? It spoiled me and I refuse to see the musical.

All great films! I think there will be a 28 months later. They better do it right. I loved Brazil. I also liked 12 monkeys and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen by Terry Gilliam. He is a truly independent minded director. Of course, any Monty Python alum has my immediate respect!

I love those Aussie comedies - Murial's wedding was great; Strictly Ballroom was brilliant. And Baz Luhrman, I love him. I have watched Moulin Rouge a million times and I still cry every time. But then, I love La Traviata too.

There was a great Aussie film about two kids stranded in a desert with an aborigine boy - can't remember what it was called (did it star Kate Winslet?). Don't suppose anyone knows it?

Oh, and Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources which shot Gerard Depardieu to fame. Great movies.

I am remembering more and more. The Danish film 'The Birthday Party' was stunning. One of those films that you just sit in silence after it has finished absorbing the meaning of it all.

I recently saw a Swedish horror film entitled Let the Right One In.

It's one of the most original takes on the vampire genre, of which I'm a huge fan, that I've ever seen. And since I've been so depressed at the quality of movies lately (or lack thereof), it was refreshing to see something so well done. One of the best movies of the past decade, for sure.

It hasn't been released to English audiences yet, but there's sub'd versions floating around torrent sites.

Takashi Miike is probably my all-time favourite director. (Ichi the Killer, Audition, Visitor Q, Gozu, Fudoh, The Happiness of the Katakuris, Rainy Dog, Ley Lines and Dead or Alive 1&2 are his best movies in my opinion - I badly want to watch Dead or Alive 3 but I can't find it anywhere)

The Pusher trilogy, awesome danish movies about lowlife drug dealers. 1&2 are masterpieces, 3 is good too. Very dark movies, the world depicted here is a world of shit and there isn't a faint glimmer of hope.

Blinkende Lygter, another awesome danish movie about a group of petty criminals who start a restaurant in the countryside. Beautiful movie, also slightly dark but more hopeful than the Pusher trilogy.

Park-Chan Wook's Vengeance Trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - Oldboy is best)

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky, super cheesy gory awesome chinese mega fun!

The Untold Story, Ebola Syndrome - Two fairly similar chinese both starring Anthony Wong as the villain/protagonist. Sick shit, makes Ichi the Killer look like Pixar's next animation.

Det Sjunde Inseglet (The Seventh Seal) - It's that swedish movie with that legendary chess game versus death. It's totally awesome and makes me proud to be a swede.

Classic John Woo movies w/ Chow Yun-Fat: A Better Tomorrow 1&2, The Killer and Hard Boiled. Some of the best action films ever.

Some other great foreign films that I won't explain in detail:
City of God, Suicide Club, Låt Den Rätte Komma In, Funny Games, Battle Royale, Tetsuo

That is about all I can think of at the moment, but I know there is a lot more.

I liked Pan's Labyrinth. (Mind, the version I have doesn't have an English dub, just subtitles.) Del Toro is my favorite director. Incredible.

That's... all I have to add. ...Soz?

Let the right one in I wanted to see, but it's apparently an eighteen, so no luck =(

As for 28 days later, the director of that did Slumdog Millionaire, which I've seen, and that's really good.

An eighteen? What does that mean? That you have to be 18 to see it?

Yup, I could probably sneak in if it was a fifteen, but no luck with an eighteen.

I can't even persuade my dad (who also likes horror films) to take me.

I don't think there are movies in Sweden that you need to be more than 15 years old to see, and most of those I think you can watch if you're at least 11 or something in the company of an adult.

Swedish is actually easy to learn. Though I don't remember much any more since there is no need to speak it in Estonia as most Swedish people speak English.
But if you have English or German background, learning Swedish comes easily, as it is similar to them lots of ways.:o

I dunno if it's been mentioned, but there's a film named Let The Right One In, I really didn't think I'd like it, but I did.

Edit: Battle Royale is really good, I'm a fan of anime but I really haven't watched too many Japanese films, although I think I should. Any suggestions?

Survive Style 5+ - One of my favorites:) Good comedy
Ichi the killer - film from Takashi Miike
Getting Any? - people were quite worried when Kitano made that film wondering if he has lost his mind:p
Takeshis - Another Kitano film, I love the bizarreness of comedy there.
The Happiness of the Katakuris - Uhm.... this is Comedy/Horror/Musical mix (Takashi Miike again)
Versus (Down to Hell 2) - Good action/comedy
Suicide Circle - This is a horror film, with a lot of strange comedy:p
Kagemusha the Shadow Warrior - film from Akira Kurosawa

I think that it is silly to not watch a film because it was produced in another nation. If the acting, directing, story and execution are excellent, you would only miss an opportunity to watch a good film with the avoidance of it. You should watch an excellent foreign movie, subtitles or dub, if it has retained its original qualities strongly.

I have a few American internet friends who will not watch foreign movies or animé that isn't dubbed. It is frustrating indeed, but hey, their loss. 90% of my favourite movies are from countries other than America.

I really liked Pan's Labyrinth. It's my favorite movie so far. Not only did the movie improve my Spanish by 0.1%, but it was really freaking awesome. I'm not usually into that whole fairytale mumbo jumbo (no offense to anyone who likes fantasy) but this movie was made quite excellently. Shocking ending, but very well done.

I like Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese films... Films from Hong Kong are hilarious, especially the old ones. I plan to watch more Asian films if I can, but right now I'm more drama-oriented. :D

Dubs are the WORST thing in my opinion, they take away so much from a movie.

Um…Terry Gilliam is from the states not England
Although the “Magnificent Seven” might not be a great western retelling of a Kurosawa film “A Fist Full of Dollars” is

Also some more Shinya Tsukamoto movies other then Tetsuo should be watched I suggest any oh them really, but body hammer isn’t as good as the first Tetsuo
Shinya Tsukamoto is also the main actor in Marebito which is directed by the guy that does the Ju-uh movies. It is also based in a Lovecraft themed book by the guy that did the story for serial experiment lain
El topo is a good movie to add to any list
If you are counting Canadians then add any Guy Maddin or David Cronenberg movie
Oh yeah Save the Green plaint is one of the most bizarre black comedies that you will find
one last one would be wildzero

I actually do not watch any TV or movies. Way too stimulating for me, and libidinal narcissism is so not my thing.

However, for the sake of Persian ( ahhh...) I will watch an Iranian movie or two now and then.

I would love to see Marmoulak, but am having a hard time downloading certain things on my new laptop, torrent films being one of them.

Anyway, if you are more liberal, not so into dictatorships and censorship ( I'm sure I'm the only one who is) , Marmoulak is for you. Pretty much mocks the whole theocracy/mollah system.

But I have not seen it yet.

I recommend Battle Royale. It is my favourite Japanese film.

Face, have you seen Shinobi (the movie, not the show... the show is absolutely horrendous lol)? Wonderful special effects! If you're a fan of the Kouga/Iga legends, some of the other adaptations of them, or the anime Basilisk, you'd love it.

When we're talking about Swedish films, I loved Kopps , an easygoing, mindnumbing comedy to watch with friends while having beers. It should give a few laughs.:p;)

I've seen Let the Right One In.... some of it is uninteresting to watch, but loved how some problems of growing up are portrayed, things every boy or maybe girl could relate to.

I'll add my two favorites:

Amores Perros - a twisted Mexican movie directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. It has a unique style and basically, three compelling and jacked up stories are connected in a surprising way.

Olivier, Olivier - a dark, jacked up French movie directed by Agnieszka Holland that you will never forget. It's a bit hard to come up with a synopsis of this one that doesn't give it away, but still sounds interesting. But it's awesome and beautifully haunting. So basically, a young boy goes missing, then reappears 6 years later. The beauty is in the disfunctional family dynamic and the creepy sh*t that goes down. A must see.
