Agreed; "your mother was the least I could do" is just plain insulting.

lolz. If I ever see your comment waltzing about town I'll get mighty extra belligerent and throw things at it, anything I can find, even the clothes I'm wearing, the papers in my folder, etc., I won't stop chucking sh*t at it, with gusto, until the poor sap's written me a letter of sincere and heartfelt apology, but it'll have to find time to do so while being bombarded with soggy refuse and clothes; and even then, I'll pseudo-accept the apology, but wave a finger-gun in it's face just to ruffle it's feathers, and continue doing this to the point that it's feathers become difficult to ruffle, seeing as how they've already been ruffled so much.

To me, the expression reeks of false modesty, or could be interpreted as meaning - I literally could not have put any less thought or effort into this gift, and I'm letting you know this because I don't really like you.

*I hate everything I've written in this post, and wholeheartedly disagree with every bit of it.

I made the smallest amount of effort so I wouldn't feel guilty about your situation?

There has been a lot of changes to the English language in the past five years. It isn't very helpful to the economy. Hey, back in the day it used to be "thee organist" and "the pianist." If I'm trying to say something in a small amount of time for something of importance with the common understanding that the other person will know clearly what I mean, then of course I'm not going to be all wordy and long winded, however, just saying things for the sake of saying them brings wasted time, disorder, miscommunication and it is... degrading depending on the situation.

I love that this conversation went on this long.

My favorite part of this hero's journey was the abyss, when 8 posts were devoted to the subtopic of the fact that cryp's link didn't work.

*sigh* You're my friends.

To hell with the bloody rules !!........
Intuitively we all understand what the word means.

The english language has so many misnomers, and has been influenced by so much crap (french among others) that its amazing.

Actually the discussion here simply highlights how robust and alive the language truly is.... we can only benefit form it.

But "I could care less" could be interpreted as just being the first half of "I could care less but I wouldn't ever".

It would be interesting if everything in English could be interpreted as if there were no syntax errors, like the now-defunct programming language PL/1.

"benefit form" could be a complex verb, meaning "form it into a benefit".

Beware, the feral french members here lurk behind the smileys.

I guess this would be a good place to vent my built up grammatical rage.

irregardless: not a word. Pick either REGARDLESS or IRRESPECTIVE, not both.
"could care less": it's COULDN'T CARE LESS. Think about which one makes more sense to the meaning.
NU-CLEAR. There is no U between the C and the L.
ITS = possessive of IT.
IT'S = IT IS.
"more better" or "more larger" etc. The "more" isn't necessary, nor grammatically correct to use.

Now I hope you all take it upon yourselves as well to obnoxiously and adamantly correct everyone who makes any of the above mistakes. Someone has to do it. I've heard two of my professors use "irregardless" this last semester.
I hear "I could care less" a lot and it kills me a little inside every single time.

What's the fuss!? If its understood then it served its purpose. and besides wouldn't further errors buildup and cause creations of newer simpler words anyways?

While we're on it:

1. Quadrilogy is not a real word. The correct term is tetralogy when a work consists of four parts. Quartet would be acceptable too.
But who would actually be so stupid and...

aquad.jpg

...nevermind!

2. Yes, most people get it right that an oxymoron is a combination of contradictory terms. But it's only an oxymoron if it is deliberate and for the rhetorical effect. "Silent cry" is an oxymoron, "intelligent politician" is not.

3. And then there are genes and there are alleles...

So true! And what do you suppose the opposite of nevermind is? Alwaysmind? We should make that a word irregardless.

It passes the Google test.

Results 1 - 10 of about 372,000 for irregardless. (0.17 seconds)

Thread FAIL!

PS. English doesn't have to make sense.

Flammable and inflammable don't exactly mean the same thing.

When something is flammable it means it is capable of burning via flame. When something is inflammable it means it will rapidly set aflame.

Paper is flammable.
Aerosal spray is inflammable or as they now caution - Extremely Flammable.
