Do intense physical activity, to encourage an intuitive realization about a problem you have in mind.

I don't relate to that at all, but I asked an S friend and he says 'i always get my best ideas while exercising'

Is it a Sensing thing? Expand on this, please.

I do exercise to clean out my head. I get pent up rage if I don't exercise, it's normal.

But, I don't get good ideas...

Well, see, i'm pretty lazy usually and i never was keen on sports. So i never 'worked out'/'excercised'. I did however have not too little physical activity nearly daily with taking care of our horses (checking fences, carrying hay bales, water canisters, moving horses from one meadow to another etc..). And i have come to see that physical activity, as long as it doesn't need much concentration and mental focus, is indeed a great way to 'think'. I observe in myself, that during physical activity (shovel work for example is very good for this), my mind is much more active and i can concentrate on topics way better, than when i am sitting in my room, on the computer.
Now this might indeed sound strange for someone, who sit ats the computer in average 10 or more hours a day (out of fun, not because of work or so) and is generally not the sports-guy.

I suppose that this is probably relatively simple brain chemistry or so. Humans are made to be physically active. The brain needed most during the hunt for example, or generally while being on the move, performing important physical tasks. Another example for this "made for physical activity" is like when you stay in one position for too long, you muscles will hurt a lot later, yet when you move constantly or regularly, you will maybe be more tired, but your muscles will be just fine.

So i'm not sure if this is a worthwhile post, since it is only about me, but for me at least this is true. ;)

Thank you. =3
I thought it was because he's more of a senser that he gets intuitive insights while actively using his sensing mode, 'working out'
I was curious to why because it doesn't make sense to me.
I have noticed that when I'm doing jobs that don't take much mental power that I can process and go into overdrive-thinking mode. lol

There is a study out there that I've once read (Sadly, I cant seem to find the source again) that involved psychologist hooking up volunteers to system that'll detect which parts of the mind are being used when (Forget what its called, meh). The volunteers were asked to read a book for a period of time, and when they notice they start zoning off from the book and going into your own independent thoughts, they're required to tell the psychologist. Most patients rarely noticed they were daydreaming until asked by the psychologist, who could predict when they start doing it through the brain scan. They discovered that the most active part of the brain in use from daydreaming/zoning out is also related to the intuitive process, and part of the mind that examines possibilities, events in teh future (near or distant) and organization of future plans.

When you do physical exercise, or really anything that is repetitious or encourages daydreaming from doing activities that are wholely sub-conscious, you're encouraging the use of that part of the mind.

Although honestly I'm not sure if this is the real cause of what you're speaking of, just trying to relate ideas so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt in terms of objectivity.

Exercise definitely clears my mind, but I've gotten all my insights sitting and thinking. Exercise tends to get me in the here and now, more S-ish so I don't really get any profound insights as it doesn't get me in the zone like activities that use N more.

When I'm irritated and thinking I have a tendency to want to do something. When I'm just irritated I get a sort of cabin fever...

Not sure if that's what you wanted to know. I'm developing my sensory, so I'm probably more sensor than most INTPs.

Perhaps the increased blood flow oxygenates the brain, also when doing menial work the parts of the brain that deal with higher cognitive functions (logic, mathematics, conscious thought) are kept busy, this allows the more creative subconscious express itself better to the conscious mind.

I always find myself willingly doing household chores when I'm trying to think creatively, it's a very stop-start process as I need to keep making notes midway through whatever else I'm doing.
Wall-staring is great for deduction or logical problem solving, in fact I think that's a key requirement of any INTP accommodation, a blank wall for staring at.

Errr I don't exercise to think clearly or to get things off my mind, or to err... get answers (as the quote suggests). I exercise because I have to and also because it makes me feel kinda happy and lightheaded and confident. But regardless of whether I exercise or not, I still use my mind first instead of relying on external stimuli to get answers to questions. That's kind weird for me. However, with that said, I think the quote has a deeper meaning to it: exercising would have certain benefits to AID you in your thinking process; the release of endorphins would make you much more confident and happier, thereby releasing some of that awful introverted feelings of negativity you might have against yourself which will cloud your judgement as well as having an overall beneficial physiological boost to your blood circulation, thereby increasing your alertness and also helping you think faster.

So in a sense, it MAY help you to realise some things that you never realised before prior to the whole physiological boost exercise gives you.

Six stories up.
I wouldn't say it's intense physical activity.. but I get a lot of good thinking done on hikes.. and being out in the woods in general. During really intense activity my mind is normally just blank.

I have a blank wall in my room that I face when meditating.. I also find myself turning in that direction when doing heavy thinking quite often.

I've never found physical activity all that great for thinking... Too much exertion tends to disrupt my trains of thought.

Instead, I often find I think incredibly well in the shower. I find my awareness of sight and sound go away almost entirely, and I'm just left with the feeling of warmth from the water and the activity of whatever I'm thinking about.

In particular, I can remember finding clear answers to several difficult decisions while unable to focus on cleansing myself. :p

This is why my showers take too long.

I dunno about too intense activity. I get deeply involved in the activity to think about anything else....

Yes, yes, yes.

I also have a clearer head while walking slowly. And I tend to pace around rooms when my mind is restless with ideas.

Nietzsche once said that all good ideas come while walking...

OR, make you overconfident and cloud your judgment with excessive positivity. I've made lots of bad decisions in those spur-of-the-moment spikes of confidence...

Yeah, same. For me, the sort of confidence I trust is a calm confidence that comes from knowing when I am right. If the confidence stems from any sort of emotion, or excitement, then I don't trust it. It's just my emotions playing games.

I get creative ideas while out walking, but I don't think it has to do with the activity iself as much as the location. If I am out where nobody can hear me, I can sing without consequences, I can experiment and try out how things sound together, and I can talk to myself without seeming crazy or irritating. I'm a very auditory person, and being able to actually hear things instead of just thinking them makes a huge difference.

If I were around people, but active, like in a gym, or in a room with a treadmill, I think the activity would just be an annoyance that would disrupt my clarity by acting as a distraction.

Haha, same here. Must be the flowing water and the relaxation that allows us to think further. I can spend so much time standing under the shower that my hands and feet go all pruny! (although I multi-task by doing it while conditioning my hair, heh)

I think INTPs probably have to concentrate on the exercise itself, making it more effective for stopping us from thinking (and thus helping us avoid analysis paralysis).

Yeah showers are nice. Walking helps me think. Smoking too, but that isn't exactly the healthiest pastime. Anything repetitive but not too intense helps, I think.

I get my best ideas all the time because they are all great. >_> usually they just pop up, but i generally expand upon them when alone and without much people or noise to interrupt thoughts.
