So this is good news. Now, I suppose the question is... will some of you stick around here? I myself am likely to pursue dual membership, having become familiar with some of you (I made an account on the org a while ago but never stuck around).

Is it possible for someone with some amount of tech savvy (not I) to transfer them to the org? I assume a series of screenshots and/or a screenvid could be used to produce .gifs.... :storks:

I believe someone here creates them though, since we can request new ones (the facepalm just showed up recently). Perhaps the mediocre method of just asking might work?

SpiralHacker - that is great news!! Don't stress about how long you need to take to attend to your personal life. Now that we know it will be back, I am sure we don't mind waiting :)

And pass on our thanks to Aspectmin too.

Those sneaky ENTPs. if anyone can invent a device to shrink elephants to pocket size, they can.

Let me get this straight - you're willing to get close enough to a bunch of ENTPs with their pants down in order to do a cavity search, when some of those ENTPs have sufficient pharmacological knowledge to make the experience so unpleasant for you that you'll need therapy for several years and will throw your guts up even just looking at a baby diaper?

Be my guest - I could always use another good story to tell at parties ;)

If I wanted to cause rampant diarrhea, what is the the most effective and accessable method/substance? Is there anything better than causing rampant diarrhea? Not that I'm like planning anything... or anything. Nope. :phear:

Kool Aid spiked with methylene blue, which turns their pee blue? The more they drink, the better.

My personal favorite is to talk someone into eating a raw indian turnip root (perfectly edible when cooked), which is like eating a mouthful of fiberglass needles.

We got all our smilies from this site greensmilies.com (album)

It's easy to add them on vbull, I turst the ENTPs can figure it out.

Also, one can use them in posts as regular images, just put the url in between img tags. Now that you have this knowledge use it wisely. :beatyou:

They should be able to. I figured it out without instructions, on the site I was on staff with.
That was probably the most fun thing I've added to a site -- searching the net for decent Smileys.

Tons of Smileys (some updated ones) at this site too:

Have a blast!

Ha! Try having the devil of inferior Si perched on your shoulder, constantly telling you you'll never remember or use 99% of your ideas regardless of their quality or your investment in them. ;)

Try reading your notes a year later and thinking "Damn, that was a good idea!".

I'm a scientist by training, and a historian by avocation. I've done research all my life, it seems. And yes, ENTPs can do research. People always ask me to find information for them, and when they're suprised at the results, I just say, "I'm a professional researcher. Don't try this at home." In another life I'd have been a skip tracer.

Ah, I'd had the impression you were into science or history. Don't know why.

:) Skip tracing. I used similar skills. In a past life I'd started off buying property from people who just didn't bother with them anymore. You know, go for a wander, find something about one that peeked my interest, track down an owner. It was fun. And great way to be lazy, have an adventure, and get a paycheck.

I'd actually gone to school for medical technology. I always dug the science and I love where records take you. Ended up sort of genealogy/history freak.

Yeah, I'm into genealogy, too. Wrote a 1500-page book on my family's history. I do genealogy for my friends. I teach an introductory course on the subject. Kind of addictive.:D

maybe you could give me some tips! I like researching my husbands family as it is way more interesting than mine - only problem is that it is only interesting as it cannot be proved yet that the supposed great grandfather really had the father who was alleged to be his father!

Any news on our new org? I see we at least have a "coming soon" page :elephant:

I can tell you what I'd do if this were in the US, but I'm not familiar with Australian databases. Here, I would look in the census for a start. They usually list families who live together. If the problem is questionable paternity, then I would go the DNA route. Ancestry.com has started a DNA database and for some not-so-nominal fee, you can have your DNA done and you can then compare with the family of the "supposed great grandfather" to see if there is any kind of match. There would also be possibilities of looking in military records for the great grandfather if applicable, especially pension files which may list children. I would also look in local newspapers from the time. In Texas, it's easier because they have birth databases which list both parents, and these go back to 1903 in some cases. Same for California, but in CA they don't give info on parents except the mother's maiden name. Don't know what would be like that in Oz.

Almost there... I've had a whirl-wind of an experience these past two weeks. My plan is to keep it together, requires some down-time, attend to my responsibilities and in-between prepare my code samples and portfolio for an interview this Wednesday and then move my free time into getting the org back up.

If there weren't enough things for me to be concerned about, I started feeling unwell and was having some weird experiences. At first I thought it was just anxiety issues but it got bad and I got myself checked out. Turns out I had real health problems and got recommended to a lot of doctors. So far I have Type 2 diabetes, a silent heart problem,
and am scheduled to be checked out for sleep apnea and a potential colon problem. I'm on it. I've been eating a lot healthier, got some books, and making the adjustments.

Regarding the emoticons: I'll install whatever emoticons we can install for our software which the community wants.

Regarding staying on this forum: I know that I will still be active on this forum, and others, as time allows. I have a draft saved for my response to that question about ENTPs and flow on this thread which I look forward to contributing to.

With the way things are going, and being that my next job, if I get it, is going to be an hour commute, I might be turning it on before I have time to really attend to it. I think this is fine considering our other Administrators and moderators.

I did look into the DNA idea at some stage and it is in the back of my mind to do that some day when we find some relatives on that line. It is actually the UK that the records I need are from, and probably the relatives too (although there could be some in Canada). I have some leads, but unsure if they are records I can access remotely. I have exhausted the internet databases of census records. The father never lived with them during any census, but I know when his leave was and it didn't coincide, so that doesn't mean anything. Through a military forum someone looked up some records and said that he was getting a single pension I think - which doesn't look good! The LDS records may have some of the records I need, but I haven't visited them yet - when I get time! Thing is, my hunch is that he was the proverbial black sheep of the family and he may have been an embarrasment of some sort and he was sent away, and if he was involved with the mother (whether officially married or not) as she was of a different religion and class it could have been the reason? As in he may have been the father but they might not have been married. Or the mother has invented some sort of fanciful story to suggest a respectable parentage when there wasn't!! So DNA probably would be the only way - but then you also have to assume there was no other broken links in the chain parentage wise!

I suspected that this would involve the UK. Did it happen in the UK?

Can you give a basic story line of what you think happened. The way I read that it was not clear enough. Start with your husband and go backward. I thought you were saying you believe his great grandfather was only his grandfather. Why do you think that? What's the story/rumor?

Also what is the year of birth for the person you are questioning the parentage of? And do you know what religion the family was?

Flow and ENTPs
Flow, for those unfamiliar, is a state of ecstasy where we feel absorbed and engaged in what we are doing, losing our sense of time and the remainder of the world. In flow, our entire neo-cortex and perhaps more of our mind is activated. Flow is possible in most every human. General psychology research has shown that it is easier to induce and may even require that that which we are engaged in is interesting to us, challenging to us, and requires us to flex our skills but at the same time, isn't impossible. Additionally to general psychology and in relation to type theory, Dario Nardi's research has shown that it is easier for a person to fall into flow when the task engages their primary functions.

For an ENTP, the primary functions are Ne and Ti which are exploration and models. So an ENTP is more likely to fall into flow when they are doing something challenging but feasible with their skill, that is an intuitive exploration leading the way of introverted thinking's perpetually refining models.

Personal Example of Flow #1
Sometimes, when I'm daydreaming possibilities, something occurs to me which begins a chain of thought developing new insight. This can drop me into flow and it can happen spontaneously in nearly any environment.

Personal Example of Flow #2
Recently, when I want to go into flow, it seems that all I need to do is start processing a folder of bookmarks that I have which designates highly rewarding material. The majority of the links in it have to do with psychology. I'll go through the folder, one item at a time, read and process it, taking notes into my existing notes of previous explorations, and then seeing how this information changes my models for various topics. These links tend to give me new insights and I find it very rewarding because it improves my knowledge-base. I'll frequently run into something in there that gets a challenging stream of work started from which I feel I have grown. I haven't visited this folder in a month, but in November and December I was processing it a lot. It currently has 270 items in it. Related to this activity are some high quality books, like Winner's Brain.

Personal Example of Flow #3
An older example is years ago when I started playing Mario Kart for the Wii. I wanted to determine what the best vehicle and character selection was, so I thought I would make a simple console application to help me determine it. As I started to work on this application, it became clear that not only was I making a generic ranking algorithm, I was doing it in a new way that I had not previously encountered. I soon lost interest in Mario Kart and developing and exploring this algorithm which seemed within my grasp became far more exciting and challenging. This was a Thursday. I took the next day off from work and got lost into the project for three days, achieving what I had sought out to do. I was in flow for most of it.

Around that time-period I remember falling frequently into flow while working on a document where I broke down thoughts on wisdom, knowledge and comprehension, mathematics and sciences. Again, I didn't know where I'd end up, it was an exploration, but I had enough skill, enough background and materials, to engage in what was a challenging task of trying to capture the essence of these epic human pursuits.

Interesting.

To put it in a nutshell, I most experience flow when I'm either trying to solve a problem (and have the knowledge/resources at my disposal to figure it out) or when I am brainstorming -- my mind pinging in various directions at once and trying to keep all those plates in the air.

A similar experience is when I'm "in the zone" and playing piano, listening to what I'm playing and building off it (like a bridge into the night) to ... get to wherever it is naturally going... while keeping ties to where the music has already been.

I continue to be very busy but I do not want to keep you waiting on me any longer. I have turned the site back on and it should be available as soon as the server changes have propagated to your area.

Cheers. I'll be more involved once I can be.

That's when the process started. I had to update the software and do some preparatory work.
