Hi

As physical sciences geek-woman, it's taken me to now (I'm 49) to 'discover' MBTI (well, be pointed at it by someone who was tested for a vile management training course). I never viewed psychology as anything other than pseudo-science. But I overcame scepticism, did repeated tests, and discovered - as of last month - that I'm a complete stereotypical INTP, and clearly have been from birth.:).

Doesn't bother me - in fact, I'm quite pleased to belatedly discover that I'm not a freak of nature. But it's all come a bit late, and reading through these forums, I feel like granny of y'all. The internet wasn't invented when I was being weird at school, weird at university, weird as a new parent and weird at work. (I'm still weird at work, but because I've slithered (near) to the top despite being INTP, it doesn't matter).

But you're all so young. Anyone else over forty? Or better still female and over forty? It's not that I won't feel welcome - you seem like a friendly-enough bunch - more just that I don't want to be feeling weird here as well, but this time for my advanced age-and-gender rather than my INTP-ness.

TIA

:kilroy:

Nah, there's plenty of oldies. We keep them in the cage over there and feed them prunes and pomegrante juice. :3

Sweet old bunch, but really quite mad.

We're here (mid-40's in my case), and EditorOne is in his 50's I believe. We're just quieter, offering our sage wisdom, in between the discussions of who is fucking who and what drug is presently being imbibed.

Welcome.

Editor One is, in calendar years, 62, and in his mind is 22. And I'm pretty sure I'm not the oldest one in here. :-)

It's never too late to find out you're not broken.

Well, am somewhat reassured, will come out from my habitual corner. Don't expect much wisdom however, more 'made that horrific mistake and suggest you avoid it'. Plus trademark pedantry and knee-jerk liberalism / meritocratic convictions. Will I fit in?:slashnew:

Granny it is. Just don't tell my kids or my id. My id considers that I'm still a student, really (albeit a greying and slightly wrinkled student). 'Granny?'; does not compute. ;)

Oh, my most favourite radionuclide. My working life revolves around it, although I had a hard time choosing between Co60 and C14. But Co60 is useful as well as troublesome. Told you I was a geek...

You'll fit in fine.

I'm 43, btw. :) Never too old to be an INTP. Considering we tend to run in disregard to social norms anyway, we're kind of "timeless" and not the type to "act our age" according to the social convention.

Well, thanks to one and all for that warm acceptance of me as one of your own (or, as we say in my part of the northern hemisphere, 'yer ain').

This coincided, last night, with my first-ever viewing, from my own back garden, of the aurora borealis. This is, on so many levels, so cosmically fantastically felicitous, that I'm interpreting it as a sign that I've joined a cyber hive-mind of people as strange as I am.

Still female?? Is there something about the makeup of INTPs that I should know?

46, BTW.

Well, she could have said "And better yet female". as in "Are you female yet?". still female = pre-operative female-to-male transgendered person. female yet = pre-operative male-to-female.... dunno if that's any better?

Welcome Co60.

Hello. I am 31 (and female). Where I am in life is more in line with where people normally are in their early forties, but I am doing it with a early thirties brain.

So if you mention troubles with your teen aged children I can lament with you because I have those too, but I'll probably be listening to similar music as them while I do it.

It's an amazing sight... I think I've only seen it once, at my location, due to rare atmospheric conditions, a number of years back.

On occasion I've been fortunate enough also to see the Milky Way band running across the sky. This summer I plan to celebrate a personal anniversary of mine by going to a secluded campground where I can watch the annual Pleiades meteor shower.

Sure, overanalyze it. :D

Here? on this forum? no WAY. ;)

Are you from the highlands? Apparently I wasn't far North enough to see them, absolutely gutted.

West central belt - lucky because there was cloud-cover until after midnight. Coverage seemed very patchy however - good in Skye, Ayrshire and Cumbria, nothing much east or north.

'but I am doing it with a early thirties brain.'

Not sure what age my brain is - but i feel far too much like my teenagers for it to be good for my parenting. I'm not good with discipline, and the fact they've not gone off the rails (yet) is more because none of them are very much like me than any positive guidance from me . Partner a little better (he's INTJ I think) but still he went with oldest son (19) to buy weed in Amsterdam last summer. My poor, conventional MIL thought i was daughter-in-law from hell. :rip:

My brain is literally thirty one years old, plus some a few weeks, as that is how old I am. I have no idea if it is older maturity wise in a metaphorical sense, but yeah, non conventional life choices led me to having a fifteen year old, twelve year old, ten year old and six year old and a house and a marriage of over a decade now at my ripe old age I am now. I am not sure if I just decided I had no use for a reckless youth or if I was overly reckless in my youth, either way, I'll be forty two when the last of these kids are legally grown and have the freedom to pursue what I want with hopefully some wisdom under my belt about life by then. Everyone my age is finally settling down with families, but they all have toddlers and seem to only want to talk about potty training, whereas I am teaching my oldest about driving and condoms getting confused over his advance math homework and stuff. I am a rotten disciplinarian too, by the way. The guy takes care of most of that. I just try to talk and reason them through it all.

-Hi...

-And welcome :)

Melkor's probably quite right about the madness. Although he ain't seen nothing yet.....:twisteddevil:

The vile management course rings a bell....that is how I found out that I was indeed the Main Weirdo in the flock of bubbly sanguines.

-Oh, and I'm 41 (hah), and female (heh).

-Going on 20-something. Most of my friends are young enough to be my children.

-And science-geek too. Also music-geek, bird-nerd, technology fan, artist-wannabe, hopeless procrastinator come-ambitious dreamer. I used to have crushes on inanimate objects and fantasy figures, so if you think you're weird you've come to the right place. Still single, no children (have a beautiful 10-year old nephew whom I adore, though), and still happy to marry Spiderman if he ever shows up around this dreary town.

-And trust me...I still feel like the weirdo, even here.

Hope you hang around, there are some truly disturbed wonderful people in this strange cyber-community.

Polaris, you could be me, transposed to elsewhere. I do now feel wonderfully welcomed and reassured. I'll wait a decent interval and then start posting my minority theories about the benefits of flowcharting emotions, and the usefulness of multi-criteria decision analysis in everyday life (this is my theory that I have. And it's mine). I'm pretty shy IRL, but on the internet, no-one can see you blush...

I just realized I call the OP old...

Well, I don't really believe in wisdom, per se. Not as in a "higher understanding" as I don't know if I can believe in an "objective" higher understanding. But it is an ok word to describe a person who thinks things through.

But, we definitely are in grave need of some experience points from those who have roamed the Earth a bit longer. I think quite a few of us, myself included, need more of the laidbackness and humility that comes with age(?).

That's one of the reasons I enjoyed working with ladies 50+. They are often very relaxed and accepts people as they are. I always feel more judged around my peers.

And yes, being with Polaris is like being with another 20 year old :D One doesn't really "feel" the age of other people when being with them. One just sees the person.

Well, that was more text than planned. I suppose it's my way of procrastinating the assignment due Friday...

You can flowchart emotions? That I would like to see.

You can do a flowchart or diagram for anything. Or at least anything where there are choices and options. Emotions lead to irrational decision-making, and where I struggle with what someone else might call an 'emotional' response to a situation (e.g. (and usually) my kids enraging me) I generally force myself to think through the various options associated with the range of responses available to me, and impose rationality upon myself. This has taken me years of forced practice (kids are good at inducing emotional responses), but I'm quite good at it now. At the simplest level it translates to posing the question 'is this worth getting angry about?' (yes/no). If yes, what are the likely consequences (list consequence a, b, c). What are the likely downstream effects of consequence a....And so on.
I reserve actually making a flowchart for bigger decisions, where it helps me to sort out my feelings and assists me towards making the rational choice - and will usually make me feel I'm back in control of a maybe-scary situation. But I use visio a lot. It's generally the negative stuff it helps with, or where I'm in danger of making a too-emotionally driven decision about something important.

i've done this for a long time, never actually admitted it to anyone because I think it's close to actual screwiness. I now realise that it's a really INTP thing to do. It doesn't mean that I'm unemotional - actually I'm very emotional. but I've trained myself not to allow my emotions to lead me into bad decisions. I have a very active inner voice that keeps me right!

Previously, I had determined that if one was born before 1970 shouldn't be on the internet. This, however, was quite ageist, so I came to a better conclusion some time later: anyone who has a particular personality (can't be more specific than this, sorry) shouldn't be on the internet. A much more rational conclusion to come to.

Anyway, if you're an INTP in MBTI, it is highly unlikely you are one of those individuals whose emotionality is over-the-top enough to show in everything they post. In light of this, I say, welcome to INTPforum and enjoy your stay.

Hello! Nice to see there are quite a few older INTPs. At 19 (almost 20) it's reassuring to know we can successfully make it that far temporally.

Also, flow-charting emotions. Good passtime. Best passtime.
Sometimes gives weird results though. Like the dreaded "Möbius of emotional tangent" loop.
