But yes, you actually have a point (I think). The MBTI system as we know it is heavily flawed, as are any other typology systems. However, being flawed doesn't mean the entire effort should be abandoned. The idea is progress. It would be sad if typology never advanced any further than it currently has because of people like you who would rather give up than perfect it. Though, to be fair, I can understand the desire give up on it if it doesn't seem useful/interesting enough to continue.

Having said that, participation in this forum is not necessarily an endorsement of MBTI or any other system. It may simply mean that some of us enjoy the e-company of interesting people, and it just so happens that many who type as INTP (or other types) are interesting. And I'm certainly glad that not every discussion here is about typology, though I do enjoy those too.

Some people really need to identify with something that is fixed and (supposingly) scientific so they can know once and for all who and what they are. I used to be like this, but eventually you grow out of that sort of thing.

However, these personality archetypes, if not taken as the way, the truth, and the life, are still quite useful. This forum, for example, has brought together people who are, at the very least, related in their unrelatedness to society. Whether there is such a thing as an INTP or not, their is such a thing as a person who is interested in discussing subject matter related to philosophy, psychology, science, and other things that just don't come up very often in the marketplace.

Skimming the topic, I feel a compulsion to clarify a few points.

Nobody here proposes that there is a definite answer to such a complex issue as personality, and even less, that it could be explained in a mere 16 different ways.

These are indicators of Main functions, secondary, auxiliary and inferior.
Which can be used in attempts to understand oneself and others in a simplified manner.


Within each and every "personality" among the grid of 16 (in the MBTI or Jungian typology of 4 variables, each of which are somewhere on a scale of 2 extremes) there is a potentially infinite number of variation, making an INTP more like another INTP than it's opposite, (thus making the system valuable, to a certain extent) but still not equal in their thinking.

Just like you may expect a person to better understand another person with the same cultural background, and thus a more equal way of evaluating and understanding the world.
This doesn't negate the individual, but gives you a simplification of how you can expect this individual to act and/or think.


If this makes no sense, please tell me and I'll try to reformulate my meaning.
