Maths is set in stone and uninterpretable. i like things which are esoteric, enigmatic and open for opinion and imaginative thought.

I feel that if it seems right to you (no matter how conventionally wrong you are), nobody has the right to alter you or correct and neutralise you. that opinion or idea is what you are, if we all adhere to the logical rules we are the same as the next figure of incarnated mediocrity.

There are fields of mathematics which are open as you described. Mathematics has developed from how it was not orginally, no? It was advanced through imagination and alteration/innovation of new rules.

NO.

it will still be bound by static logical principles

10 years, no change.

and even if what you say is somewhat true, i would still rather pursue music and art than maths

There has been change significantly prior to these 10 years. As you fill a cup, there is less room to fill it up. Maybe our advancement is slowing down as it's less easy to discover. We're filling up the cup of possibilities with all of our innovations. Think of us knowing everything. The cup's full and there's no room for us to expand any longer.

Isn't the cup already full for maths, music can be altered and changed and reinvented infintely.

I think that it will be a long time before we fill the cup for science, maths and music. Until we have reached these times, the fields are open for us. It is your choice with which one your pursue.

I read this entire thread. That may not make me the dumbest but it puts me in contention.

Soth? I suggest keep practicing here. You're doing well. Soon you'll be able to step up to the big leagues :p;):D

Every INTP here only has knowledge of their bedroom through physical experience. The knowledge of the 'world' that they learn is from books.

Well I'm old (by comparison here) and immature as well.

What does that say about me?
(Don't anyone seriously answer that)

You realize that music is not just jumbled noise but a structured logical system, no? Besides theoretical mathematics is probably the most intp like field around besides maybe computer science. You can build any world you can imagine...endless possibilities for someone not concerned with pragmatism.

Your still stuck in crappy sensor high school math. Stick it out and wait till you get to the fun stuff.

True inteligence is in the Creativity and Depth of Thought. Not the abilty to repeat others like in mathematics and science, i have far too short an attention span and lack of motivation to do this.

Mathematics is one of the most creative disciplines that exists. The sad thing is that the way it is taught in schools, no one gets a chance to see this. If you could catch a glimpse of true mathematics, I suspect you'd be fascinated, as are many INTPs (most mathematicians are NT's, and there are a high number of INTPs).

edit: sorry posted this before reading hopefulmonster's post. He says it very nicely and also explains why there are so many INTPs there.

I mean this is the nicest possible way but...HAHAHAHA. It is clear you have no idea what you are talking about. I really mean no offense.

I suggest you do some research, talk to some mathematicians, read some books about the history/philosophy of math etc. I am one, if you PM me, I'd oblige. If not, that's fine. Up to you, but just had to correct such a blatantly uninformed statement. :) No problem we all do it, and it's not your fault, it's what you've been fed by people who have no idea what they're teaching.

I hate being fed educational Junk Food.

the teaching staff are nothing but Burger-Flippers

but i suppose in high school, even the arts in the way they are taught are boring and unoriginal, but i just have some kind of faith in it. I just have a feeling that I could do something in this field

This is the reason that I prefer attending private schools (not all normal high schools are bad, though). They frequently have very higher standards for teachers' character and credentials. The private schools want their students to acheive very high results, which requires superior teaching. They have the selfish reason of maintaing their high position on the academic league table, but this also benefits the students. If they are high on the league table, parents will pay highly to have their children educated there, expecting them to be taught at a school which has students performing at a very advanced level on average. They are motivated to have students perform brilliantly through the possibility of increased profits often.

There are some that are only $10,000 annually, which is very cheap. Your parents should value your future highly. Your parents do not have the income to afford $10,000 each year?

I hate the way mathematics is taught in public school. It is this beautiful creative process...the language of reality or all possible realities but they tell you it's just good for balancing a checkbook.

The problem is you need to learn the boring ass stuff to understand the abstract/creative branches and it's already too late by then because 99% of the kids are burned out.

you know it's strange. i have always been in top sets and classes for maths yet never considered myself good at maths. it has always been my worst subject even when i do better in maths than another subject, i still consider it my worst.

however many times i have been told i am good at maths i have not believed them

Agreed the first part.

The second part: disagreed. To compare with languages: how come shakespeare can be taught in high school? If so, then creative math can too. I've done a bit of teaching here and there for kids as young as grade 3 up to grade 9 (as a grad student volunteer), and we teach them the creative part: the thinking process and the discovery and the problem-solving. They always tell us "that was so fun, we never knew math was fun!".

The real problem is that the teachers who teach math have not learned it in the first place. It would be like asking your english teacher to teach you shakespeare when the only thing they have learned so far is spelling. Of course they couldn't do it!

I had to repeat one of my high school math classes because it made absolutely no sense to me: just memorize this, do that and done. Why? was a question that could never be answered. That's why I really can understand the poster who said it was set in stone etc. It's because that's what s/he was taught to believe.

Sorry that got kind of long.

In real life I excelled in school, relationships, and found that most people consider me "smart". On this forum...I feel very dumb compared to you guys. Maybe our potential (IQ) maybe on the same level, but I feel you guys are a lot more educated than I.

Do you guys think I am dumber?

I receive an electric shock while hooking up a DVD player, a curious turn of events.
So I deliberately shocked myself again just to be sure I didn't imagine the first one.

Now that wasn't dumb, just scientific curiosity.
The third time was dumb.

The forth, because somehow I thought it was funny.

The fifth, because it's still funny if you have ADD.

The sixth, I’d developed a habit.

I don't think you are dumb. I tend to judge people not necessarily by knowledge, but by their character, way of interactng, reactions to things. Little subtle things, you know? I don't think you are dumb in the slightest.

I do, however, now have to cover my your avatar with my left hand while reading your posts.

It's funny, but I feel the same when I'm posting things here or chatting on the irc too. And for the record, I don't think you're dumb =P

Jealousy hurts, doesn't it?

I would like to make clear that my first post was not humorous. It was a logical truth produced by deduction from irrefutable mathematical truths, the details of which would be too complex for human brains such as yours to comprehend.
