I can find stuff I like in almost any genre, but I'm picky. Most of my music collection is metal (mostly 'classic' and 'extreme' metal), followed by classic rock. Then I have albums here and there from random bands in other genres. Overall, I'd say my tastes lean toward music with interesting instruments.

heh, well, not to give you the wrong impression and a false sense of idolization. Hanging out with bands that are touring isn't quite the same as touring with the bands. Plus, it's more like I hang out with people who hang out with bands. I'm sure I go unnoticed.

I love most kinds of music, but I prefer K-pop/J-Pop/Visual Kei/C-Pop/J-Rock.

I like classical music, partly because it helps me sleep/concentrate.

I choose metal, classic rock, and the progressive catagory, But out of them, I enjoy the progressive catagory the most.

I listen to a lot. . . and I'm picky enough that I have problems with the general nature of the word "genre".

Jazz is my study music: Ella Fitzgerald, Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Nina Simone, Andrews Sisters.

Rock: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Boston, Alan Parsons Project, The Cure, The Police, Dave Matthews, Talking Heads, The Cranberries, Counting Crows, Third Eye Blind, Stone Temple Pilots, Paul Simon, Coldplay, Coheed & Cambria, Queen, Cat Stevens, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Cake, Beatles, and the incomparable Van Morrison. Also, the occasional ABBA and The Beach Boys.

Indie: Arcade Fire, anything that has Ben Folds in it, The Bens, anything Jenny Lewis, Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie, The Shins, The Weepies, Elliott Smith, Sufjan Stevens, anything off a soundtrack produced by Zach Braff, Joshua Radin, Rilo Kiley, Feist, Bright Eyes.

Classical: Holst, Shostakovich, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mendelssohn, Bartok, and Smetana.

Can I be weird and admit at the moment the sounds of nature are my favourite music? The wind in the trees, birdsong, running water.

I'm going through a 'bare' phase. I've pruned back my listening, though I'd really love the 'luxury' of music in my life. Hmm, such longing may indicate that the time of self imposed aural starvation is (over)due to end.

I said oldies. I really like the 60's bands, and some of the 50's and 70's. I like classic rock as well I guess you could say.

I like metal, particularly classic, most extreme metal, and prog metal. I also like most rock, from classic to modern, progressive rock, some jazz, brit pop (mix of indie and prog), blues, most anything in the rock arena involving some amount of thought and musical mastery.

Mostly progressive psychedelic trance.

Synesthesia makes such a quite wonderful experience, (harder psychedelic trance can be quite a special and mind-blowing trip, some sounds actually hurt).

It can help me set myself into a trance when i think correctly and lie down, making me experience magnificent visions. And afterwards, when looking back at them i usually see they have great metaphorical meaning, which when discovered, gives me a greater understanding of things, as they describe how a particular system works.

My favorite group is Vibrasphere.

Very nice, thanks Sphere.

I like quite a few different things, including many non-lyrical pieces. However, when it comes to lyrical music, I really prefer Dar Williams, especially The Beauty of the Rain and The Green World.

I enjoy a very broad spectrum of music, however, from Bach to AC/DC and many, many things in between.

In general, I don't like much country or rap, but I have occasionally found a song or two within those styles that I can appreciate.

I listen to many different things, and it's hard to list them all. I'll try my best...
Techno/trance/electronica/dance is one of my favorites, simply because it's nice to have something simple in the background when my mind is occupied by other things. Few complex lyrics or beats. My favorite bands/artists in this genre are the Chemical Brothers, Paul Van Dyk, Echo Image, and Royksopp.
Rock/Alternative Rock is another favorite.
Indie is always fun to listen to.
Some Folk is good.
Specific types of classical music make me very happy, but I'm very picky about them. I can't tolerate most of the popular classical music...you know, the ones that repeat the same basic pattern over and over and over again.
And then I really like a lot of soundtracks from movies, such as the songs from Pan's Labyrinth.

Hmm...I'm probably forgetting some, but those are my favorites.

I'm an audiophile, so I like good music.
Namely frank zappa, led zeppelin, tool, tori amos (check her out NOW!), morphine, primus, weather report (RIP Jaco), some metal, some electro-experimental (my brother is a music technician, so that's always in stock), I greatly enjoy Freeform Jazz, like miles davis, and as I have said, weather report. Classical music has some of the best pieces ever created, however I dislike people who say they like classical, because it just means they have no idea what they're talking about. Mendleson? Ludwig Van? Mozart? Wagner? WHAT DO YOU LIKE!?

Oh, and I'm a bassist, because I like the sounds that can be made, for example, the styles of mark king, victor wooten, les claypool, marcus miller and JACO PASTORIOUS.

And I'm in a band, but the guitarist is lazy and thinks that we have to be a genre, the drummer keeps going out of time and the singer is a really good musician, but not that fancy a vocalist.

The bassist (not the bass player, mind, for he is known as the wannabe-guitarist) in any band with a real bassist, is the most important mortar to the band. The bass plays in the key of the lead, but in the rhythm of the percussion. And if your name is any of the before mentioned, then you ARE the lead, and you sound damn cool.

Oh, but music, yeah... If it means something, or is of a high sound quality, without being the same old mass produced modern indie or dance crap, then I enjoy it.

"Father lucifer, you've never looked so sane,
you always did prefer the drizzle to the rain.
Tell me that you're still in love with that milk maid,
and how the lizzies has your jesus christ been hanging?"
Tori Amos - Father Lucifer.

Completely Crazy, but absolutely beautiful music.

I like a lot of things. Jazz, Classical, Rock, Metal, Electronic, Funk, Reggae, Indie, Western (NOT country), Tabla, etc

Could Indie be added to the list? It's a rather new sort of type I guess, and it is hard to characterize... Sort of doesn't fit in with anything here, though.

I listen almost anything with an idea to it. It's been hard for me to listen to music that is plain music since 9th grade. I think I got too wrapped up in philosophy for my own good.

METAL!!! black, death, thrash, it's all good...

I shy away from alot of death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse because there is nothing interesting about straight gore lyrics. However Carcass I do enjoy because they use medical terms. Chuck Schuldinger's Death is also interesting because he uses rather complex song structure. namely i don't like there to be alot of blast beats.

I like some Black metal, although I find the bands are either split between just being part of a scene, or like many black metal fans, getting way too caught up in the philosophy.

Thrash metal for the most part is good

But I find Industrial Metal to be my favorite. Ministry and Rammstein

Grind can go either way, depending upon the vocals most of the time. Cannot stand pig squels

Power metal is good too

Re: Music?

I listen to many kinds, but lately - mostly rock music including alternative, pop-punk, emo, some hardcore, and pop rock.

I've gone through stages where I listened to trance, hip hop, rap, house, jpop, cpop, and kpop.

I will never listen to country or classical.

Re: Music?

I have a very narrow taste in music. I hate most of it, anything that wasn't written by the person performing it is immediately damned, and anything that's superficial or airy is, also. I don't like the sound of electric guitars, and the vast majority of rap either fits into the categories of being written by a board of directors or being shallow, and the remainder does nothing for me. I didn't really like music much until I came upon Joanna Newsom, who I listen to with near-religious devotion, and later Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn, whose music I enjoy but not nearly so much.

Re: Music?

Anything. Over the last couple months I decided being an elitist bastard is no good.

Mostly:
Alt Rock (Silversun Pickups, Sonic Youth, A Perfect Circle)
Goth Rock (Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Switcheblade Symphony)
Metal (Death, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, Opeth)
Post Punk (the Cure, Joy Division)
Industrial (Rammstein, Ministry)

but really just about anything

Re: Music?

Basically everything except country / polka / Bluegrass.

Urban music I'd say.

I usually like:

-Lupe Fiasco
-John Mayer
-Kanye West
-Jay-Z
-Green Day
-My Chemical Romance
-The Gorillaz
-Busta Ryhmes
-Jimmy Eat World
-Ray Charles
-Frank Sonatra
-Talib Kwali

etc...
I mainly listen to rock, and hip hop because it's so popular, and widespread, and I rarely buy CD's, so it's just convenient, but I only listen to hip hop that has some kind of message.
(e.i. Kanye West / Lupe Fiasco / Talib Kwali)
I like Soulja boy and people that are similar to him, but that's only because they're hilarious (unintentionally).

Re: Music?

This thread feels familiar. Anyway, the music I like varies with my mood, but I usually keep away from most rap/ hip-hop/ newer pop. Classical music is good, but I have trouble tearing away from the layers of sound, so I avoid it whenever I need work done. :1

Rave
Dance
Remix
Techno
Rock (Whatever they're calling "modern" rock)
Celtic
Easy Listening/Alt (whatever you want to call it)
Anime and Game soundtracks
Some J-rock isn't too bad
Classic Music or remakes
I end up picking up a lot of random songs I just like.
I can pretty much stand everything else, I'm not necessarily fond of it though.

Scooter
Bass Hunter
Tatu
4Strings
Various remixes
Gorillaz
Chemical Romance
Fall Out Boys
Enya
Foo Fighters
Bond
Alias
Daft Punk
Linkin Park
Evenescence
Death Note Soundtrack
Legend of Mana Soundtrack
DNAngel Soundtrack
I need to get the FLCL one from my bro or his friend, whoever has it.
I tend to like a lot of random songs. I would say I like Flobots, but I really haven't heard much by them. Same with a lot of other "rock" artists these days, I haven't heard a lot of them, but I like a few songs.

Generally speaking I like music without words, but my favorite songs have words probably.

I really like Mad World (remade?) by Gary Jules.

Re: Music?

I listen to just about everything from classic rock to R&B. But, just like most of you have already said, I cant stand country or any other genre related to it. It's tough living in Appalachia where that's the only thing people listen to!

But some of my favorite artists/bands include: AC/DC, Audioslave, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Nelly Furtado, The Eagles, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Weezer, Disturbed, Poison, Guns N' Roses, Buckcherry, Hinder, Nickleback, etc...

(this is only a few, as there are hundreds of them I could name...)

(Mad World is indeed a cover of a song by Tears For Fears; however, I find the original... uninspiring, to say the least, and think Gary Jules did the song a great justice by recreating it.)

Metal and classical.

I find both to be complex and thus worthy of my INTP analysis!

My taste is a bit darker, preferably, eg. Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony; Rachmaninov's Prelude in C# minor; etc.

In metal, these songs probably describe my taste best:

Dream Theatre - Stream of Consciousness
In Flames - My Sweet Shadow
In Flames - The Quiet Place
Mudvayne - Happy?
Disturbed - Stricken
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants
Papa Roach - Blood (Empty Promises)
Slipknot - Before I Forget
36 Crazy Fists - Skin and Atmosphere
Stone Sour - 30-30-150

etc etc

There's nothing I hate more than really cheery songs, with major chords galore and simple harmonies! :O

I can't believe I've never heard Constant Motion, by Dream Theater, before, until now. What an addicting song! I'm going to end up listening to this on repeat for the next few weeks, just like when I first heard Stream of Consciousness...

Zero7 is on my iTunes. So was Royksopp and Massive Attack.

Depending on my mood, I incline towards different types of music, including classical, jazz and mainstream pop. But generally I like Electronica-Chillout/Lounge, Lo-Fi, Electronica-Dance... things that have a melody and a beat (but not necessarily someone crooning... =X).

I put metal and oldies (jefferson airplane, black sabbath's first two albums) but that doesn't really show my tastes very well

My favorite genre is probably post-hardcore and early emo.

I'm really into this youtube version of she's lost control though. Much better than the album and live MP3s I have. 301 Moved Permanently

I notice that metal of some kind is kind of popular. I've had my days of metal when I was younger. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Prong, Sepultura, Seance...
But over the last couple of years it's mostly jazz (as if my icon of Bird didn't give that one away). I prefer saxophone players, well.. Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Wardell Gray, etc etc
And lately I've been focusing on gypsy jazz. Django Reinhardt all the way! :)
Of course the originals Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, but also players like Jimmy Rosenberg, Tim Kliphuis, Fapy Lafertin, etc etc
Especially hearing Jimmy play is interesting, how he acquires a typical feeling whilst still maintaining incredible speed.

Metal and classical - but classical comes first, because I grew up with it. Metal comes second.

Metal: Nightwish, Epica, Therion, Haggard, Within Temptation, Empyrium, Leaves Eyes, Theatre of Tragedy, Tristania, Dream Theatre, Black Sabbath etc.

Classical: Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Beethoven, Schubert, Grieg, Strauss II, Erik Satie, Debussy etc.

I also love celtic music, new age and medieval. Other favourite artists are Loreena McKennitt, Medieval Baebes, Blackmore's Night, Nightnoise and many more. Oh and irish music as well. :D

underground hip hop most of the time (Def Jux and Rhymesayers type music). occasionally rage against the machine or system of a down, AC/DC, nirvana and a few others. mostly i like the thought provoking lyrics from underground hip hop artists (and i can't stand mainstream hip hop, as its uncreative and gives hip hop a bad name).

I have to say that I cannot stand metal (unless it is instrumental).

I used to listen to a lot of underground or whatever I get download for free (legally) off of the internet. I got exposed to a lot of styles I didn't know existed such as gabber, Drumm n Bass, industrial, and the like. Haven't done that in a while, though. Good times.

if it rocks and/or has some dark edge i'm all over it , driving bass lines , surreal atmospeheric, music that makes you FEEL something....um, but not annoyed ;)

i hate pop in general. I think thats the much shorter list cause i like a lot of other stuff

here's an example of a musician that should die : SAY WHAT YOU WANNA SAY, SAY WHAT YOU WANNA SAY, SAY WHAT YOU WANNA SAY, SAY WHAT YOU WANNA SAY....i know what i wanna say alright.

I would throw into the fire the ones that say "baby" more than twice in the same song also.
