How do you feel about your voice? Do you have trouble finding your voice among others? I love my own voice, but I have a lot of trouble finding it around others. It's quite interesting really, as a chameleon of sorts I tend to mock other's tones of voice after they say something... but if challenged to say something of my own, I often struggle figuring out how to even say it. Singing has been another dilemma of mine, as I love to sing..but only to myself.. unless I'm drunk and not being put on the spot. Anyways, how do you guys all feel about YOUR voice?

Last year I took Choir class and was part of "Select" Choir.
(Never sang before in my life!!!)

I took them for the sole purpose of experimenting; becoming more outgoing and confident. It worked, a little. Now I have a decent tenor voice, but still prefer to sing only in a Choir or by myself.

My tone of voice has often been described to me as being gentle, soft, graceful... *shrugs*

As for my singing voice, I can stay on tune and have a pretty good range, but it's slightly raspy on the lower pitches but I like singing anyway.

For my talking voice, it could use some work. According to some, my voice ought to be more assertive if I'm to be better at debate. The cases are pretty good, it's just the delivery. According to others (aka my mom) I have a snotty tone. I'm not sure who to believe yet. That and I keep stumbling over my words since my mind is much faster than my mouth.

depends. if i'm talking to 1 or 2 people i know well, my voice gets very passionate and assertive sounding. in larger groups, i usually don't have a voice, but if i do, i usually just talk quietly to one person close by (i don't think i'm capable of adressing a large crowd). i can't sing at all, i just don't have the voice for it. when i talk, my voice sounds great to me in my head, but if i hear it recorded, it sounds nothing like what it does in my head.

Voices never sound to you like they do to others because other people hear your voice just through the air, while you hear it both through your ears AND through the bone of your skull, etc. (This is why if you want to change your voice in some way, you should record it and do lots of playback, NOT go by what you hear yourself.)

My voice has gotten more melodic over the last year or two as I become more confident in myself; it used to be very flat, inflection-wise. But it still never was strong, I have a fairly soft voice and could never really yell loud and be heard.

When I get really angry, my voice shakes. People used to laugh at that, because I'd go from my typical calm/easy-going sound to this quivery voice, and that's how they knew I was really upset about something.

My singing range is not great (I can't go too high, I am definitely in lower alto range), and my voice quality is not unpleasant, but I feel I have only an "average-sounding" singing voice. However, I do have close to perfect pitch and am very musical.

I have more voices than I can keep track of. I change pitch, accent, tone, etc. dramatically depending on who I'm talking to, in what situation, and what about.
One situation where I can predict what it'll do is when I'm angry. I either whisper and hiss, or I scream at the top of my lungs - nothing in between, and it varies mid-tirade.

I have a very good singing voice with a very large range. I can sing second alto to super high screech soprano. As for the tonal quality of my speaking voice, I hate it. It sounds okay to me when I hear myself but the recorded voice is awful.

I have a tendency to pick up the accents and sometimes the speaking styles of the people or person who I am listening to.

As for my speaking style it has become more assertive over the years. I have learned to use the pauses and inflections that some say are characteristic of the way INTP's speak, to my advantage. By the way I don't know if INTP's speak in a charateristic way, (using pauses). Someone on yutube suggested it. I would put in the link but I don't know if I could find the video. I found it on yutube by (as I recall) searching under INTP.

I don't really feel as though I have a distinct voice. Which is why whenever I made youtube videos I sound a little weird. When speaking I do the chameleon thing.

There are so many ways that my verbal communication will change depending on who I am speaking to. I tend to match the dynamics of how they are speaking, their vocabulary, and their emotions. My voice tends to calibrate with their own, and my entire mindset tends to merge with theirs in order to (I presume) best facilitate data intake.

I'm having a major dilemma with my voice right now though. It's much lower than I'd like it to be, and have recently lost the ability to feel comfortable singing.

Believe it or not, I pause a lot too. Makes for shaky delivery in debate. :( Most people say "like", "so", and "um", filler words when they don't know exactly what to say. As for me, I say nothing instead. Hence the pausing.

Also, my speaking voice sounds really strange when it's recorded. Apparently I have a low pitched voice for a girl, and don't use inflection as much as I thought I did.

My voice isn't as nice as I want it to be. It's okay for speaking, but I wish I could have a good singing voice and a range higher than two octaves. My hearing's pretty good and I can hit notes well, though, so it isn't all bad.

I use the word 'um' just about every time before I start talking to people. Probably it's because I used to talk really softly and had to get peoples' attentions.

When all you hear yourself saying all day is "No" "Don't do that" "Stop that" "Leave it alone" "Come here" "Go away" "Sit still" "Leave me alone" "I'm busy" "No no no no no no no no" "No" "Be quiet", you rapidly come to loathe speaking.

My voice is ugly. It only ever gets used for ugly words.

"I'm tired"

If I lived alone my children would totally be raised in benevolent neglect and could tear the house apart as they pleased. Anything so long as they left me alone.

As it is I hate speaking and I hate the sound of my own voice. It's the flat, dead voice of someone with no reason to live and no anticipation of joy.

Speaking hurts. I can barely string more than three words into a sentence.

I kind of like my own voice, but without it resonating through my bones it sounds awful. Maybe I would get used to it if I heard it more often.

When debating I find it hard to express whats cooking inside so I tend to pause a lot looking for words I think are easy to comprehend for the person(s) I'm talking to. I also think I sometimes stutter a bit, but I only heard myself doing that a few times so who knows.

A few years ago I had this 'thing' where certain words were harder to say, like it was coming out with a twisted accent. I got over it without doing anything so I didn't think much of it.

Personally, I think my recorded voice sounds like a cross between a frat boy and a hillbilly. Luckily, I don't have to suffer through it, as it sounds much better when I am the one talking. I don't sound bad singing though, so eh.

I'm trying to picture it and failing.

When I do recordings I make my voice deeper than usual, and I'm told it sounds professional and soothing. I learned to do this in radio class, by imitating my mother.

If my ordinary voice is recorded I sound like a snob or a cynic. The absolute horror is sounding like a rich kid... or simply like a kid.

I have tendency a to switch accents that can be annoying at times. People can never tell where I come from just by hearing me speak. At least in Spanish I sorta fuse my accents. In English I sound like I have multiple personalities.

Can't sing for real, just carry a tune within a limited range.

My speaking voice is low. People usually don't believe that I sing soprano because it's so low in normal conversation. I can't stand hearing my voice recorded. I think it sounds horrible. I also pause searching for the right words to use. I hadn't ever really thought about that before. I wonder how that comes across to the people I'm speaking with. hmm...

If I could change my voice, I'd do it right away. My voice is sharp and loud (my sister always complains about that), a bit out of tune and because of the shape of my mouth I always sound sad ( + the intonation in Finnish language that goes down in the end of the word). I think my voice sounds good only when I'm having a dramatic speech. Due to it's sharpness and loudness I get attention easily.

I've been told that I have good singing voice, but I started to doubt it when my friend told me that I sound like an old gypsy woman... :/

I've noticed that when I'm speaking English or German my voice becomes softer and more nasal and when I'm talking at the phone to my sister, it gets high and baby talk -like (my friends pointed that out too. )

I use my hands quite a lot too, even when I'm explaining very simple things...

My voice is pretty low too because of that people sometimes dont understand what Im saying so I have to say it all over again which I really, really hate. The thing is that i dont like to raise my voice so its very likely to keep happening, I almost never shout, if someone is far and I have to tell them something fast, Id rather run to them instead of shouting.

Titania, it's better to sound like a gypsy woman then a serial killer.

My voice. I don't have a problem with it I guess. Inflection is all or nothing. More often, nothing. I occasionally slip in to a Southern accent when speaking to my mom. I would say I pick up accents fairly easily. Some words will set of an accent. I now pronounce pedophile with the "eee" sound instead of typical American "eh." I blame Potter and the BBC. I cannot read aloud for more than a few sentence before choking over the words. I am incapable of whispering. I either talk or mutter under my breath.

There is a condition called "foreign Language Syndrome" (As I recall that is the name of it). As usual I don't have a link for it because I saw it on tv, not on the internet and I am too lazy to find a link and post it for you. But, if you are still interested, here's the story.

A woman who had never been to England, had a stroke (Not that going to England should natrually give someone a stroke). After the stroke she had a thick English accent. This happened many years ago and she still has that accent. Unfortunatly the tv show gave no explanation as to what happens in the brain to cause Forign Language Syndrome but it is still interesting.

What I have observed is there are some people who pick up accents easily (like me) and others who retain their original accent for life. I have heard that self esteem has a lot to do with this and I think that is a bunch of bullshit. I suspect something in the brain.

I have some English friends, some of whom have been loosing their accents and are picking up a southern U.S. accent while a few others (who, by the way, don't have very high self esteem) who have not changed.

Ah, yes, I have heard of that women. Amazing.
Self esteem? As in low self esteem = picks up accents? Ha. You can kind of see the thought process behind that, but I don't think it has any basis in reality.

I am incapable of whispering. I either talk or mutter under my breath.

Me too. When I`m trying to whisper, I`m either completely unheardable or overly loud.

However I hardly ever talk to people who aren`t my family members (when I had to change a school, some of my new classmates wondered if I`m not mute), and, if I do, my voice is quiet and sentences - as short as possible `cause I prefer to not to say two words when it`s enough with one. Sometimes I think I should communicate solely in writing.
When speaking to family members/people I know very well, my voice can change twice in a sentence, but mostly it`s quite solid (I find it hard to speak in "soft" languages) and definitely more confident, though it depends on why I`m speaking - if I`m monkeying around, then my voice can sound childish, but it`s rather creepy way of childish.

When singing my voice is unable to change color, timber or whatever else voices usually can change - there`s no difference what I`m singing, all the melodies are sounding same.

A friend of mine spent about a month in Ireland. When he came back to the states he could hear the "Midwest Accent" in everyone who spoke to him. This stuck me as odd because its the accent I'v grown up with and is also the accent that I see used by Hollywood the most. The concept of hearing it as an accent is beyond me :D.

I did notice that my friend had not brought an Irish accent back to the states after his trip. He said that he basically adopted the accent while he was around the people speaking it, but dropped it when he left. I can semi-relate to doing that because I often pick up the mannerisms of those who are communicating with me. Of course that fits right into the "chameleon" tendency of INTP.

I do not think I have ever adopted another person's accent, but that is most likely because I have not been exposed to another accent over a long period of time.

Edit To be more on topic: I find my voice is either rather quiet or one of the loudest in the room. Its quiet when I am around people I do not feel comfortable with, and loud when I am with a group of friends/ family. This loudness can even carry over too when I am in public places. As long as I'm among a group of people I trust I can speak my mind very easily. The polar opposite occures when I am not around people I feel comfortable with.

When I told my mother about this tendency she did not seem to belive me. In her exeperience I have always been a fairly vocal individual. Then again, she either sees me in a setting with friends or family. This odd habit I have formed made it difficult to type myself on exactly how I/E I am.

My singing voice is quite good I have been told. I have made people cry with my singing.

My speaking voice imo, is kind of dorky. I tend to talk at a higher pitch in social situations than my 'real' voice. It's not an even voice, I'm pretty expressive when I talk.

My real voice is very high pitched and girlish, though i'm a 14 yr old boy it is still very high and when i speak it is very shaky. i dont have a loud voice, when i shout i shift up a few octaves and temporarily deafen those in the vicinty.

cant sing, possibly because my voice is still breaking. i agree with the chameleon thing, i act completely differently depending on who i am with, with strangers i am a mute, with those closer i am louder and dare i say it a slight extrovert, but rarely.

(Somehow I skipped over this thread when it was started. Baww.)

My voice is pretty dynamic, depending on who I'm talking to or what I'm talking about.
When I'm talking by myself (yes, also to myself), it's very very quiet, but also almost lilting.
It depends on the situation when I'm talking to others. When it's someone I'm close to and we're being silly, I can be kinda loud (but not near yelling standards. And unfortunately, my voice breaks more often when I'm louder.) When we're just talking I'm generally quieter than they are, with a lower pitch than most girls, but still pretty expressive. And then when I'm calming someone (which actually happens more often than you might think), or if I'm talking to an animal (which also happens more than you might think), my voice turns into...mm...think dark velvet.

On the phone I consciously work harder to bring up the pitch of my voice. I can't stand talking on the phone, 'cause it warps my voice and makes me sound male unless I do something about it. The same goes for recording devices. If I think someone is taking a video, I'm mute.

Singing-wise, I have a pretty good voice. Definitely a wide range, though I'm primarily alto. I freak out if I ever have to sing by myself though; I'm in a chorus outside of school that is absolutely wonderful.

Mmn...I also can mimic other people reeeeaally well. Their actual voice, not just their vocabulary or dynamics or whatever. It's actually quite fun. ^^;

I have the same issue on the phone. I already have a low voice slightly monotone voice in real life, and it only gets worse when it's recorded. I've freaked out quite a few guys that way.

I have the voice of an angel. I spend a lot of time in the woods singing beautiful and trance inducing melodies to the birds and other forest creatures. The birds all flutter around me and land on my arms and shoulders and I dance through the woods gathering all the sweet little forest animals around me. We all celebrate life together and have a gay old time.

And then I eat as many of the little fuckers as I can sink my teeth into while they aren't expecting it.

When I'm alone, my voice is really expressive and varying, but then I start talking to someone else-- even a microphone or voicemail-- and I can hear how much flatter it suddenly gets without recording it and listening back. I don't want to know how atrocious it sounds after being recorded. I sing really well, if quite quietly, and I have a high range. I can't whisper either, and I get yelled at a lot for murmuring under my breath when my mom hears me and I didn't know she was there.

I read books to myself when I'm alone. I imitate all the voices and make the text really over-dramatic and stuff. It's fun until I realise what I'm doing and get embarrassed (of what, I don't know). ;)

But if you're going around singing like that, it's gonna lead Melkor straight to you! Which means he might come after me!
I'm not sure what a shotgun would do against him (probably nothing), but...
