You guys are taking it too easy. Conservatives aren't stupid and have more subtle arguments that that, though equally fallacious. On evolution, the most common argument against it I hear is this.

• Evolution is a process that depends on random mutation
• If you sum up all the random mutations that led to humans, you get a probability so small as to be effectively zero
• Therefore, evolution can't have produced humans

I even heard this from a science PhD friend, who happens to be Mormon.

Of course the fallacy is that it is a process built on random events, not a random process. Natural selection favors successful mutations/adaptations, which eliminates the series of improbable events. It's kind of like a Monte Carlo. The simple fact that our universe rewards success means that the successful will win. Call that god if you like, but the theory works fine without the anthropomorphism.

By my definition that counts as stupidity, but as it's largely due to a lack of education you could call it ignorance as well.

Also, concerning your friend's argument against evolution, regardless of how small the chance for something to happen may be, it is still possible. We are physically incapable of observing all the trillions of times it may not have happened, so our only observation may be the infinitesimally likely occurrence that spawned us. There's a technical term for this argument but I can't remember it at the moment. And not saying that that's what happened, but it can explain a few things that are otherwise easily dismissed.

I won't argue with that, many leftists tend to be incredibly idealistic, thinking they know far more than they actually do. But I don't personally know any leftists like this, while I do know plenty of right-wingers who claim Christian morality to be the solution to all the world's problems.

Also, when I speak of all this, I refer only to social issues. I used to be all for controlled economies but my time here has convinced me that I know nothing about economics, and so I refrain from commenting on it for the time being.
