To cut or not to cut my hair?

So, I've been mulling over the life-changing opportunity... to cut or not to cut these long locks?

Now, you'd probably like to know a bit about my hair (Well, at least, I hope you do, so I can keep rambling) I've got super thin, fine hair. It's sort of a golden / dirty blonde color (It's truthfully really hard to describe). And at the moment it's a couple inches below the shoulders. My part always changes, depends on how it looks when I wake up (Though, typically, it will fall into a dead-center part, but lately I've had it split off to the side) and I hardly have any bangs, they are too long.

So, what style am I thinkin'? Well, not a bob, or a bowl cut. I personally find those very repulsing (Really, I think it's just the name) even though I've had a bob before. Here is a style (pixie cut!) on amazing Doctor Who (And Oculous and Guardians of the Galaxy) star Karen Gillan.

7adfd43c404494a74cdb438f985a2419.jpg

It'll, at least, look something similar (Don't count on it being the EXACT same)

Why am I even thinkin' of getting this outrageous cut?

Well it's not because it's outrageous or a celebrity-popular cut nowadays. It's more of that I've just been admiring it. I also would just like to see what it's like to have that short of hair (Like, how amazing would it be during marching band to just shove on a shako and go? Instead of all this fuss...) But, I think a point I'd like to highlight is, is that I would like to be a bit set off from other people (And no, I'm not all that worried about how I look - Well, at least not in the romantic kind of way, 'cos, you know, INTP's have the bird and the bee drive of a doorknob, well at least I do) since nearly everyone I meet has long hair and I guess I'd like to stand out a bit but without being a sore thumb, you know? I'm not sure what I'm saying, so don't take that into account.

And I hardly ever have my hair back, but I think that's more because I don't like the feel of a pony tail and because my hair is so fine, it falls out in wisps everywhere. And I don't believe in the whole 'face shape' thing, because, well, guys of all different face shapes have short hair and they seem to be pulling it off.

Actually, I'm not even sure why I'm asking, there's no points I need debated or anything. I'm just curious as to what people who understand my general personality have to say, I suppose. I've asked friends what they thought and I've had some saying 'Oh, you'd look so cute in that!' while other said 'Oh! Don't! Don't do it!' and a few close friends being utterly indifferent.

Anyway, in short, what's your thoughts on short hair, and I guess me getting it?

Of what? I was never worried about how I'd look, that was senseless rambling. The entire point of that was pretty much asking what everyone else thought of just the idea of short hair.

I think it's best to wait for the INTPf womenfolk to weigh in on this matter.

I'm still not sure why females take haircuts too seriously. I mean they can grow back in a few months.

It depends on your type, your facial features, ratios, etc.
One size fits all is but an illusion.
So, yeah, to quote "A high definition photograph of an erect human penis":
man up and take a picture
(Now that i've said it, it doesn't feel as weird as it should.)

Get it cut. If you don't like it, it will soon grow out.

the idea of short hair is a great idea

the greatest of all the ideas ever conceived of

but to offer opinions about how short hair would look on your face it would be helpful to see your face

I don't like short hair, because I'm not really serious person, and think that with longer hair I look more easy going, which helps me with dealing with people, because they think I'm nicer than I really am.

proper intps don't have hair "styles".

Agreed. My hair has grown unruly for the past 18 months and I've allowed no pesky hairdressers access to it. I've alternated between hair past my shoulders and a borderline buzz cut in the past.

Every time my hair's short I feel like some clone. Long hair feels more authentic.

Yes, because since you are asking you probably want to. I prefer longer hair for brown haired people shorter for others. (depends though, males blonde can be longer and females black can be longer)

That's just preference though. Take before and after pictures though so when you inevitably hate having shorter hair we can all talk about how much better it looks shorter.

Cut it if you need to work efficiently with revolving machines. Otherwise cut off hair elsewhere if the compulsion to cut off something can not be ignored. Personally I wouldn't want to mess to much around with what grows on top of the brain.

I'd say let it grow. I've been growing mine out for about 2 years now. I've always felt like I looked better than with long hair though.

I'm an INTP female and I cut my hair about a month ago.
Super short, shorter than the picture.
I have really thick semi-wavy hair that apparently sticks up straight out of my head so it was kinda the poofiest mess of poof until I invested in some expensive hair styling shiz so people would stop regarding me as a tasteless delinquent, but your hair type sounds great for a pixie cut.
First things first, you're going to find everyyyyy cowlick and thin spot in your hair and you're going to have to buy some 20$ pomade or something so as not to be viewed as a barbarian, but rather a chic loser. And you probably have already considered this but make sure you're getting the right cut for your face shape or else you may end up looking like a beta charizard.

But yeah, I'm completely for women in pixie cuts. I think androgyny or a gamine style is one of the most attractive things.
Also, beware of conservatives, they'll look at you like "feminist scum!" and perhaps even maybe stone you for heresy you undomesticated wild woman, shame for cutting your pride off! SHAME! :rip:

But I say go for it, it makes life a breeze, but if you do end up looking like 2008 Clay Aiken then it'll grow back eventually.

I've had both very short/androgynous hair (ear length) and stupidly long (waist length) hair. I had cut it super short a few years ago mainly out of curiosity, I wouldn't do it that short again, but curiosity demands to be sated when it arises. It's grown out longer than I've ever had it now, to the point that I have to be careful not to shut it in doors or light myself on fire when using a stove.

Right now, I'm curious about the length of my anagen phase, so I intend to grow it out to its maximum, but I'll probably keep it fairly long. I enjoy the tactile sensations of having long hair. It's one of those things that more trouble it is, the more fond of it you become.

I do like more androgynous visual aesthetics, though I don't really have a preference for hair length in women. Though a lot of women, use waaay too much product and thus smell terrible. There's also the occasional man who can and actually does pull off long hair. Rare, but glorious. If you like short hair, you should simply go for it. It'll grow back after all.

I traded my fashion sense for +1 to imagination, so I might be of no use in this regard. But I agree with others, if you won't like pixie cut, hair, unlike most actual body parts, grows back.

I was wondering, do people tell you that you should get it cut?

The more I get told that I "need a haircut" the more I deliberately avoid cutting or styling it. An ultimately pointless act of rebellion but I can't help it.

I do the exact same thing. Same when people tell me I need to shave my face.

@ OP

Just do it. It'll grow back.
"Life-changing" :rolleyes:

I'm still not sure why females take haircuts too seriously. I mean they can grow back in a few months.

There will probably be a unified theory of physics before we know that.

I prefer longer hair for brown haired people shorter for others. (depends though, males blonde can be longer and females black can be longer)

Can you make us a flowchart?

The more I get told that I "need a haircut" the more I deliberately avoid cutting or styling it. An ultimately pointless act of rebellion but I can't help it.

So easy to manipulate.

Ok, I don't know the Op's personality - so my answer is about hair. A short cut would depend on face shape and can be fun. I also have fine hair and occasionally chop it short. It becomes a lot of maintenance, and I obsess over cutting it. Frequently. I'm letting it grow long again, a relief from the craziness of maintaining it short. Having fine hair, I have found some relief in dying it to get more volume and texture. I use a professional grade dye, and only do the roots so as to give lift without overstressing the shaft. Color can be fun.

And... I notice I get a lot more attention/interaction with it long. ALOT more. Not that that is the desired goal, but it sure is a barometer as to what others are attracted to.

I would say keep it. There's something oddly satisfying about having long hair, but even more it's something others can never take from you - it's yours, in all its beautiful glory. As Adaire said the sensation of touching it is very pleasing. There are probably people who'd like to touch it but would feel awkward asking to.

It looks like you have some practical reasons for cutting it, so depending on how willing you are to wait for it to grow back, this might be the best option for you.

Basically, do your hair in whatever way you most prefer. Who cares what anyone else says?

Everyone's different, and different cuts can suit different people. But you might have other reasons besides the visual (e.g., practical reasons). Whatever -- it's your hair, so your priorities rule. The only concerns I could see are occupational -- for example if you decide on some really unique hairstyle that runs against the social mores, and yet need to maintain/find work. (Kind of like the piercing/tat thing.) At that point, you balance your needs and just make a decision.

I think Karen Gillan is awesome, and she's had a variety of hair lengths (from, um, NONE to decently long). She happens to look good in all of them. Some of the rest of us might not fare as well, but it does grow back and there are other options in the meanwhile. Did you see the video of her actually getting her head shaved for GotG? Love her.

There are some people that touch it without asking...

Those people die.

Speaking seriously, that's probably the worst thing about having long hair.
More people need to mind the personal space bubble.

OP: if you suddenly look a lot different, people may expect you to BE different. you ok with that? 0other than that, short hair is definitely less prep time. Band geeks rule btw.

Hair is part of personal identity, you INTP autist.

Sure. Yet there are a myriad factors that are a part of personal identity. If the length of your hair is such a fundamental element of your identity, then you've got bigger problems than deciding on a haircut.

Indeed, I could argue with even greater vehemence that she should definitely cut her hair, precisely because it would widen her mental horizon of what her identity can be, and challenge other's perception of her, escaping the superfluous and rigid box that she's placed herself in; face her fear. The months of potential discomfort until it grows back are a rather insignificant cost of such a low-risk experiment.
