Post your ideas for new inventions for discussion, redacted if needs must due to IP protection reasons. If what you propose already exists, others can point it out so you won't waste money trying to file a patent or whatever.

My latest ideas are:

A floor tile which has pores that suck away the dirt. The dirt all goes into a bag in the floor eventually (made of recyclable material), which can be replaced.

A kitchen sink with integrated choke clearer (I wanted to do a toilet bowl but apparently that's been patented already).

A mini-forklift for cardboard boxes.

A portable comb-binding machine with automatic document feeder (not a two step process i.e. you won't have to punch the holes first then insert the comb after, it'll do it automatically for you, and you won't have to punch the sheets 20 at a time or so). Possibly could be integrated with a printer.

An escalator with seats (perhaps for use in an old folks' home).

I should think that the problem with INTPs is not having a dearth of things that one wants to build/invent; the problem is that so much is happening so fast around the world that what you want to do may have been done already.

I find it safer to discuss needs/ problems that want solving...in a generic way. I have a bunch of cool solutions to questions that no one else but me may be asking (and I am not telling until they are patented, should they turn out to be worth the investment of time/money), but it is a lot of fun brainstorming to find solutions for other people's needs.

Ya, I wouldn't see the point of discussing possible ideas on a forum site unless you have no intentions of ever trying to patent them yourself.

Sadly enough I don't currently have any Ideas because I just come to the realization that I should write Ideas down today (because my memory of specific ideas is very short lived normally).

Currently the only Idea I am working on is an Idea for a Novelty store. I don't really have all the specifics worked out but there are about a million different ways of running a novelty store I am not really afraid of having my idea stolen form someone on the internet.

Of course I am suffering form insomnia tonight so I might come up with some cool ideas. Cool ideas normally do come to me when my brain refuses to sleep.

I don't think I will be sharing them but this forum did inspire me to get creative.

Just use two different rays at a 90 degree angle and upload the finished version to a 3D-program. By turning the body back and forth and see it from different angles, chances are that the doctors would find stuff they previously didn't find.

What's it like to make a living off of being an inventor? Any past examples you can share? Sounds interesting.

I'm not making a living off of it at the moment...I have a very good three day a week job, and don't really need other income, but I am always inventing. One of the patented items is sitting dormant right now, and I am currently working on setting up for manufacturing of another. The first invention has been built and proven, but is such a big ticket item that it is not feasible to pursue *at the moment*. That one involved a step into big business and the stock market, and it was a rude awakening! LOL. I am still recovering from that experience.
Patents can be very expensive to get, and more so to to maintain...and if it is really something good, the bigger players in the field will be gunning for you. I think inventing and licensing ideas could be a good way to go, but having experience as a manufacturer myself, that is not something I have done...yet.

The electromagnet then suddenly reverses polarity to force the chair down. A spring below the chair's attachment to the pole causes it to bounce several times before it comes to rest, with a suitable sound effect being played or mechanically caused each bounce. A groove on the pole causes the chair to half-twist each time it goes up or down.

Intended for children, probably pre-teens.

Although, the way you worded the idea makes me think maybe you're looking for something that would slip right under the cardboard box, no pallet required. A regular forklift is perfectly capable of this maneuver, but it is frowned upon by companies who want their product transported safely and without visible damage. Unfortunately, all it takes is a tiny error in judgement to put you forks right through the cardboard box and into the product.

I don't want to give out any ideas that I might actually be able to patent someday, but when I was in the fifth grade I dreamed up(in my head only) a weightless backpack. I envisioned putting my books in a circular capsule that lined with a particular pole on the outside, then placing it in a circular backpack that was lined with the same pole on the inside. I thought that it would make it easier to carry my books home as I thought it would make my books weightless. I didn't think of how I would actually get the capsule into the backpack nor did I take the weight of the magnets into consideration. Computers have made that idea of mine nearly obsolete anyways, e.g. digital textbooks.

I have a neat idea for a fishing rod, but I'm not willing to share it :P

One of my old ideas was a waterproof file which allowed the pages inside to be flipped by pulling a lever on the side.

Um...you do realize that while your idea would make your book capsule float within the backpack, that the magnet attached to the capsule would push down on the backpack with a force equivalent to the weight of the books and capsule combined, yes?

The only thing that your idea would be good for would be protecting whatever is inside the capsule from shock

The way it would work is that you would have a tank of water that you would use as the counter weight, to pull the elevator carriage upwards via cables.

Sensors in the elevator floor would measure how much weight is in the elevator, and a pump would move the appropriate amount of water into the counter weight tank in order for it to go up or down.

Given that it is such a simple device, installing more than one pump as a fail safe, plus including a hand operated pump in the case of power failure, means that it would be safe to install in remote locations. (when power fails, people get stuck in elevators for hours waiting for a repair guy).

Have you ever tried picking up a rock when it is underwater, and it feels light? But then when you take it out of the water, it is super heavy? That is how the link you posted works. Whoever invented it made a regular counterweight and put it inside a tube. When he wants the counterweight to get lighter, he pumps in some water.

It isn't a bad idea, but much more expensive and difficult to make than my idea. Plus, I don't like the idea of steel cables being constantly wet for years and years, rusting, and deciding to snap when I am on the 6th floor.

My idea is simple and different - imagine a seesaw with a kid on one side, and a big empty tank of water on the other side. If you want to lift the kid up, you put in exactly his weight of water, and then one cupful extra. When you want the kid to go down, you take out the cupful you put in to make him go up, plus take out one extra cupful to make the kid heavier than the tank of water.

elevators are just seesaws with pulleys. And a motor to unbalance them of course.

I do not see how just george's elevator is a perpetual motion machine. The elevator would necessarily consume energy to transfer water to/from some reservoir to the counterweight.

A ballpoint flowing ink pen with adjustable thicknesses (like a lens opening) for artwork. It would have to have a mechanism to allow the setting to lock into place, but not in a preset way. The whole point is to not only avoid the hassle of constantly switching and capping/recapping pens, but to also provide fine control over the gauge. The pen would have to have interchangeable/replaceable ink cartridges too. I don't want to have to buy a ton of pens. This pen would replace an entire "set". It's got to have high quality parts, which makes it expensive, but I think it needs to be designed simply enough (or come with a good manual) so the artist can take it apart for maintenance, or to replace parts if one piece gives.
