So I had a short discussion with Red Mage about surprises and I had the thought that XNXJ in genral dislike surprises because of their ability to make plans and schemes. But how do INTPs think about surprises in general?

Mind you that this not about winning the lottery or that your kitten suddenly dies but more about small turns of events.

I checked neutral because it depends on the surprise.

Surprise birthday paty = Fail!
Surprise wife in lingerie or lack thereof = Succeed!
Surprise car wreck - Fail!
Surprise visit from an old friend = Succeed!
Surprise visit from an asshole = Fail!
Surprise gift = Succeed!
Surprise leprosy = Fail!
Surprise dinner plans = Succeed!

I voted no because I hate any and all surprises, but I think I wouldn't mind surprise Noddy's wife in lingerie. Although, I would have liked her to call ahead of time.

I like surprises, based on context.

If it's a surprise like the day I got laid off after Christmas and our family had only a few days to find health insurance at a time when everyone is traditionally on holiday, no, I do not like surprises.

But the jokes I find funny, the movies and books that inspire me, the music that thrills me -- it's all based on being surprised or caught off-guard by something I did not anticipate that in hindsight makes perfect sense. In that sense, I love surprises.

The determining factor I guess is "Does the surprise disrupt my life or enhance it?"

* Noddy spews vomit directly into Melkor's mouth *

That was surprising, but I doubt that it enhanced my life much.
(In fact, I might have trouble sleeping now. Thanks!)

-Oddly enough, this only encourages Melkor, and anyway, he's used to swallowing vomit and stuff-

I was going to stop spamming, but this IS the surprise thread.

i clicked neutral, even though i usually expect terrible outcomes and surprises are generally in the form on turns for the worse, but just because i've gotten tails more often then heads doesn't mean the next flip will be tails.

Surprises would be a welcome break from the usual.

But they never come.

I clicked neutral, since it really depends on what the surprise is. Also, I tend to be neutral to a lot of surprises that come my way, or see the surprise coming, though everyone else involved thinks it's a surprise. Perhaps I'm not getting a big enough surprise. Also, surprises, especially those involving a gift or party for me put me in an awkward situation. I keep saying thank you and expressing my appreciation, but according to people's reactions, my reciprocation is never enough. Darn immature Fe...

Surprises from introverted intuitives who understand me: yes
Surprises from everyone else: no
Surprises from life: if positive or relieving
Surprise endings in media: always.

I never understood what people thought was so great about surprises. From even my good experiences surprise never added any thing good for me, all it did was annoy that I didn't have time to prepare myself for whatever it was ahead so I can enjoy that surprise to the fullest extent.

I like how you summed it up, Waterstiller. This is pretty much how it is for me, though I have to say surprise plans do not generally please me unless I can make it and it does not interrupt pre-existing plans.

Example: I check my voicemail at 3pm on Friday. Message from Wisp. His birthday party is tomorrow afternoon. I have no present, I cannot make it due to a prior family engagement. Bad surprise, I kill him.

I love surprise visits, provided they don't severely interfere with pre-existing plans. I even consider improvisation of plans (ie, we go somewhere, change plans on the fly) a sort of surprise for me simply becasue I have an assumption about how the plan is going to go and changing it in any way is a surprise.

It's probably a good thing that I don't mind Wisp's surprises generally, because all he seems to DO is change my plans on the fly. XP

There'll be milkshake.

I clicked no a couple days ago, but was too lazy to explain why =P

But it was mainly because I'd just had a 'surprise'
My parents had organised a party for some reason, and I'd just been told I had half an hour to tidy my room, because 60 people were coming round....

I don't even know how they knew 60 people *glares*
But I do tend to think I don't like surprises because most surprises I get are along these lines =/

I like suprise endings and such, but I don't generally like real-life surprises. So, I voted 'no.'
