Are we all fond of midnight snacks or is it just me. If I'm not alone on this one share your favourites with me, if I am alone I shall tell you what I like to munch on in the dark hours of the night after awaking for no good reason.
A few pieces of chocolate followed by a glass of milk seems to be my favourite right now, though I imagine time will change it.

I'm a night owl, so I tend to also eat late. I don't ever get out of bed to eat though, unless it's morning, and I've been awake for a few hours.

My preferred late-night foods are chocolate (lots of it), leftovers (pizza, pasta, whatever's in the fridge), soda (coke, dr. pepper, creme soda, etc), and so on. If I'm actually wanting something hot and substantial, I like to go to the local Chinese place for takeout.

When I lived on campus during college there was a great place called "The Village Wok" that was open until 3:00am every night, so I spent a lot of time (and money) hanging out there.

Now I live in a more blue-collar neighborhood, so the "cultural" eating options are more limited (the University of Minnesota, the 4th largest university in the U.S, had a plethora of eating options from Chinese-American, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Greek, Thai, Italian, American, Somali, Lebanese, etc). There is one place near me that is fantastic though: it's called "The Tea House" and specializes in Sichuan (sp?). We'd order ahead and run in a pick stuff up late, but since it received a 4-star review in a local paper, it's hard to get in and out as quick. Food is AMAZING though. :D

yummy! That sounds great!

I currently live in a traditional town just out of walking distance from Tel Aviv, so there is NOTHING open past like 10pm... damn. What's worse is that my flatmates go to bed early (and i'm practically nocturnal) so I can't cook at night.

On the upside, they're gone a lot so I make TONS of pasta during the day! It's amazing how many different recipes (without sauce) are good cold at night :D

I have a fondness for Strawberry Bannana yogurt, and various brands of chips. They just work so well really late at night

Interesting how many INTPs are night owls

I'm trying to be healthy with my midnight snacks; soda water mixed with cordial makes a great soft drink substitute and I'll eat anything that doesn’t require noisy preparation, preferably leftovers. Meaty pizza that’s been left in the fridge for a couple of days is also a particularly good delicacy.

I like smoothies, Honey Bunches of Oats, pistachios, cold pizza, the classic PB and J... Just about anything so long as it doesn't take too long to prepare.

I tend to eat dinner around 11 pm when I'm home by myself but when I have to accomodate others and eat early, a bowl of cereal an hour or so before I go to sleep hits the spot quite nicely.

Peanut butter and jam, that's disgusting.

A make a big bowl of rice and cover it in tomato sauce, or just salt.

PB&J rocks! It's the greatest thing since sliced bread! oh wait, half of the recipe IS sliced bread. That'd explain why it's so great! hahaha

Hmm.

Have you ever tried reversing that? How about tomatoes covered in rice pudding? :p

What's that?

Rice on it's own with a sprinkling of salt may sound boring, but good simple food tastes surprisingly good if you take the time to appreciate it. Most people are so used to eating saturated junk they think rice doesn’t have a taste at all.

Anyway who here enjoys sushi, and who hates it.
Edit: and Vegemite, if anyone here knows of it.

My kiwi friend is all about the stuff. I tried it and it was probably the nastiest thing I've ever tasted. A few years later I decided to try it again on the basis that it couldn't have been that bad. It was. Ruined my toast experience for the last time. :(

I miss sushi.. hardest thing to give up when I went vegetarian. Spicy tuna variant rolls were heaven. I also miss making it, but I haven't found a veggie roll that is worth the effort.

As for my snacks:
steamed broccoli w/ lemon juice
toast w/ strawberry jam
white peaches
pluots
various types of apples
grapes
tea w/ shortcake cookies

vegemite = not so much, in my book. I was in New Zealand a few years ago and tried it... I don't plan on doing it again :P

It's an Italian creamy savory rice dish. It's amazing.

@ zxc: Oh, yes! We have to have a good dose of that too. Yay Dream Theater.

My wife loves Marmite, but has to make do with Vegiemite most of the time. Vegiemite is in the stores here, but she prefers Marmite, which she only gets when it's sent from her mom's family in Australia. Maybe I have that backwards.

Anyway, it's pretty nasty stuff if you're not expecting it. It kind of like what you might find growing in the toe of an old, damp gym shoe sitting on a radiator for 6 months. Once you adjust your mind to it though, it kinda like concentrated beer paste. :)

I have lots of options for midnight meals. If I plan on being up for a few more hours (or the whole night!) then I tend to like to eat something with some sugar or that's warm. Honey nut cheerios was a favorite of mine last year, this year I've moved on to oven-warmed pita and hummus.

I do have some habits of eating before bed. In denmark though, its tradition, aswell as in the region around ( england , germany, sweden etc ) to bake Rugbroed.bread with rug instead of wheat. And since i cant find an english explanation ill leave it there. So you cut it in slices like any bread. and personally I would have abit of butter - and meat of choice, or eggs / vegetables / salad. Etc.

Doing that is a favourite, however, it takes a while for the stomach to process especially that kinda "heavy" bread, and when you go to bed, I've found i wasnt feeling too good eating rugbread just before bed, especially if you get up early. Because of getting up early im going light. Vegetables fruit, cornflakes. etc. before bed, if i really cant wait.

Should i not need to wake up early.. Rugbroed is great ...Also, Cognisant, meat-pizza from the fridge after you've endulged yourself perhaps, but later crave more = the best thing you can find lying in the fridge, imo.

ham n' swiss cheese on an everything bagel/english muffin toasted, or just ham n' cheese rollups, nutella by the spoonful/combined with peanut butter/on ritz crackers, sometimes eggs sunny side up on rye toast, take 5's, goldfish, monster energy drinks, tuna, leftover chili/chiff choff (once in a blue moon). All of this together sounds disgusting.

Some of us are blessed. Although I'm sure down the road the ole metabolism starts slowing down from the speed of a racehorse.

I usually like to eat chips. Salt & Vinegar are the best. If that's not available: applesauce, cold pizza, canned pineapple, popcorn, sandwich. Stuff that I can make w/o making a lot of noise is usually the way to go.

I did just get a waffle maker so I might have to try that out some night.

I'm assuming everyone here really are night owls.

From best to ok.
1. Sweet desserts
2. Sweet creamy things. Ice cream
3. Sweet plain sugar. Just sugar.
4. Anything else sweet except for chocolates.
5. Powdered milk in powdered form.
6. Salty Chips
7. Fruits. Sweet ones.

Oh god this is always such a terrible, terrible battle with me! I try to stay light with a bowl of miso soup if I crave salty, and baby carrots if I crave sweets. That's usually all I have in the kitchen anyway.

Or if I can't afford to eat anymore that day I stare at foodgawker and imagine the taste of each picture until I stop craving. Such is the pathetic life of a college student. :p

Wow, you have a really weird standard of "sweet".

Wow, you have a really weird standard of "sweet".

It's definitely an acquired taste :D Depending on the brand it actually does taste really sweet.

It basically came down to I either shift my sweet tooth towards that or continue consuming boxes of ferrero rocher.

Apples
Cucumber
Tomatoes (I've been weird addicted to these)
Rarely I have banana chips or raisins
I occasionally have tea cakes (marshmallow on biscuit covers in chocolate) or biscuits (cookies and milk or shortbread)
Very very rarely I have toast (either with honey, jam or cheese on)

I don't usually eat much at night. I think it's because all the thinking that I go through during the day exhausts me, so I usually sleep very well, or faint the moment I touch the bed.

Hm...

But if I were to feel hungry in the middle of the night, I wouldn't mind beef jerky and nice cold milk.

If it comes to last resort though, some hot chocolate would also be great.

But that's because I only wake up in the middle of the night during winter.

In another state of mind
Toast, pears, peanut butter and banana sandwiches, Kashi granola bars, hot apple cider, instant noodles, honeydew melon, left-over rice (with butter, salt, and pepper added), cheese cubes, apple cinnamon oatmeal (with or without peanut butter added), a couple of Girl Scout cookies, pita bread and hummus, hot chocolate, dried mangoes, almonds or cashews, a salad made of: cucumbers, tomatoes, feta cheese, olive oil, and vinegar...
I do MOST of my eating late at night. It's bad.

I usually tire out by the end of the day (school is like a living death trap) Yet, it's probably from how much I think that wears me out. Also if I got up in the middle of the night my dad would say get to bed now! Though, I do stay up very late (later than I should anyway) and I have one word then... CEREAL! XD though I also eat/drink hot chocolate, oatmeal, toast, pancakes, brownies, cookies, fruit drinks, fruit, pizza, etc. etc.
