Can I get a link to the spectator thread? I'd like to skim their thoughts.

Also, for anyone thinking my "I'm moving and have no time" excuse is bullshit:

I'm neither strayan nor INTP, but drummer wannabe, yeah, sure.

I'd like to learn bass at some point, too.

Your excuse might not be bullshit but those pink shoes definitely are.

They are red as Zerk has mentioned but even if they were pink they'd be fucking rad.

Shit now I really want pink converse.

Noice. Was that from random digging? What turntable do you have?

My gramps let me have his old record player but it's dusty with no cover and the anti-skate doesn't work. I replaced the cartridge to get it to play again but the needle broke I think.

A lot of the recent stuff I've gotten has been from digging. When I first started collecting them I would only get albums from bands I knew/liked and I'd get most of them online but I've taken to walking over to the other record store in town and rifling through their stuff and grabbing anything I think looks cool.

Right now all I have is one of those Crosley suitcase turntables with the speakers built in but it was all I could afford back in High School when I was getting into it and I really hate the thing. I'm just holding out for now because the guy I'm moving in with in a couple months has an actual turntable (not sure what brand, though. I want to say it's a relatively newer model).

Bummer that yours isn't in great shape. A lot of those older ones are a lot of work to keep them functioning properly. They're worth quite a bit, though, if you get them all fixed up. What model is yours?

At least the Crosley won't scratch your records, right? Mine isn't really worth anything, it's a Fisher mt716 and they produced the lower end stuff for Sanyo in the 70s-80s.

High school was when I got into it as well, mostly because of WhatCD and hanging out at Amoeba records after school. I'm holding out too so I haven't bought many records but I went through what's left of my family's collection. The whole thing is pretty fun to be honest, I look forward to reaching 174 with reggae, dub, electro and 'world music' finds.

Hi, people of the INTP Forum!

I understand that you are exploring building a mafia community on this forum. I was summoned here from another mafia community (on PersonalityCafe) by QuickTwist, just to encourage this (cause mafia is awesome), and offer a piece of advice, if I can.

Awkwardly I must admit that I'm not usually the type to give out advice, or meddle if you will (since you are familiar with typology I can mention that I'm an ENTP and enneagram type 9w1 - so you can maybe imagine), but I was kindly asked to support this community. So, I will offer at least some suggestions that I think will be helpful, based on observations that QuickTwist has made.

---

Basically what I want to advocate is that it is very important that the premises for the game are layed out and that they are understood by all players. This includes the basics of how the game works, the rules for this mafia community and finally the rules of every specific game.

Regarding how the game works, a basic explanation is pretty easy to find and make. The basic idea of the game is simple, and it can be expanded by adding new roles, factions or special rules in games. I understand from QuickTwist that many of you are analytical thinkers, and great with concepts and implementing ideas, and I imagine you would be especially potent in the realm of building and designing games or new roles, and playing with and elaborating on the basic idea of the game.

Regarding the community rules it is very wise in my opinion to have some general rules that are easy to follow, in practice and theory, to ensure all game play works as it should. Normal for mafia communities is rules that regulate communication and information flow outside of the game thread. No game relevant talk outside any game thread and no quoting from the moderator or your personal role information in QTs (if you use that). Another helpful rule to have is making sure personal attacks are not tolerated. Some forums aren't very strict about that, but in my experience games can quickly turn sour and ultimately uninteresting if the whole thing turns into a shit fest. It is a game, after all. It is also a good idea that every game has at least one moderator that is clear about the rules and enforces them, and the one to turn to if anything is unclear.

Regarding game specific rules, it is best if all the rules for the game and for the community is layed out before the game begins. The rules must be followed to ensure that the game works, that it is not broken. If anything is unclear, the moderator should be as available as possible for clarification. Some sites forbid mod questions in thread as this may be read into and used to argue alignmnets. This may be easiest to deal with as a mod, if they are allowed mods need to ensure a neutral tone and answer even "fake questions" like mafia asking about if mafia have day or night chat.

I'm kind of excited by the idea of an INTP Forum building their own mafia community. It has all the potential to be super solid, and maybe create really creative setups and new ways of breaking down the game.

As I'm prone to ranting, I will summarize my suggestions:
- Be familiar with the basic idea of the game and communicate it to new players.
- Lay out a framework of rules for the community. Important components should be to ensure no communication or information slipping in to or out from the game thread. And if it pleases you, rules about attacking arguments and not people (as mafia sometimes can include some heated arguments).
- For moderators, make sure the rules are clearly stated and enforced.

I hope many of you will explore the game and it's possibilities! It's a very exciting game that can be very enjoyable (and addicting...). Discussing setups, play styles, strategies and all that jazz also can help a community build.

I hope whatever insight I could offer is of some use to you. And I hope to see you grow as a community. ^^

Some info on Dyslexicon:

Dyslexicon (Dizzy) answered in a questionnaire sometime last year in a game that he has played 60+ games. He was also the representative player from PerC (Personality Cafe) for the 2016 Mafia Championships. He told me not to brag about him too much and said he mostly plays for the love of the game and what possibilities the game brings to him. I respect his play greatly and he knows how to make the game fun and not too serious.

Yeah, Crosley needles aren't necessarily the kindest to your records, but they work fine on the whole. I don't know a ton about Fisher turntables, actually. All I know is that they're one of the models my boss doesn't generally do repairs for.

Nice! Which Amoeba? I've only ever been to the one up in Berkeley. World Music is definitely an underappreciated section. You can find some crazy awesome stuff there. Like I have these groovy japanese electro-funk albums that I found digging through this store's world section. And I'm actually up to 177 now :o oops lol

Yeah I can't wait, a high quality player is really low on my priorities right now though.

I don't know if you like reddit, but clicking on random links in vintageobscura kind of gives a similar experience.

It was the one in Hollywood pretty cool that they would have shows there too. I encountered other shops in the city but never bothered to check them out.

This game looks like a ton of fun.
It's been pretty rocky the second time around I think cause some of the initial players were exhausted and posting QTs and too many replacements kinda breaks the game imo. If there's a 3rd I hope more of our other members join so there can be fresh meat.

I know I shouldn't be ranting about the game in here, but I'm really disappointed about the role reveals. It's just a shitty, shitty thing in my book. Maybe I'm wrong - I'm not an experienced player, but blurting out your role in an attempt to create leverage is bullshit.

I'll continue playing, but my heart isn't in it now. It's a fucking shit show.

(no reflection on QT, who has been a great GM as far as I'm concerned).

Are you talking about role claims or VT quoting?

The former's stock standard. VT quoting probably needs to go though.

Yes, sorry. I was referring more to the VT quoting - but even the role claims are irritating. Motherfuckers don't know how to keep their cards close to their chest any more.

Bae be like "IMMA DOCTUR YO", and I be all like "WATCHU DOIN' BAE? SIT THE FUCK DOWN!"

(I have no idea what I'm on about).

Lynch is the only weapon Town has, and it should be a last resort, but claiming blue is better than being lynched. It means you can try lynch scum that day, as opposed to wasting your lynches (only way to kill mafia).

And as it confirms you Town it increases odds of successful lynch.

I don't deny that, but I still think it's bullshit. THE RULES, RB! THE RUUUULLLLEEEEES....canbebentIknowbutwhatever.

An anecdote, if I may. I just shared this with Hado in a PM and thought it worth mentioning.

Years ago, I was given the role of seer. I was elated - finally, a decent role I could really get my teeth in to. Alas, it later transpired that a fellow forumite with who I had clashed in the previous game, was also assigned a special role - vigilante (they can kill one person).

With his very first post on day one, he used his one bullet to kill me.

Much hilarity / facepalming followed. The whole game was a piss take after that. It was a good one, but the whole feel of the game was very tongue-in-cheek.

Games are supposed to be balanced around mass claiming but I've always hated certain roles in games. For example (avoiding the topic of this game all together) Some games have a player that knows the entire mafia team at the start and it's balanced around if the mafia all get caught but they can pick who that player was they win the game.

Just adds too much of a gimmick imo.

In contrast one mafia player not knowing who their teammates are when his team mates knows him is hilarious and should totally be a thing more often.

I have been following the 2nd game (haven't read the first). I can't tell if the random bouts if bratty behavior and pouting are typical or not, but that's the only part that looks not fun.

It can get extremely frustrating.

Yellow, any feedback on my performance?

I don't think I can play mafia as mafia if I'm as obvious as everyone says.

Up until the cop claim that is, I ballsed that up.

The 3-day day was a huge commitment, too.

Not so bad if you could go at your own pace, but other people set the pace, and you have to keep up... No excuses.

Not typical, but in a game where roles are contrived bratty behaviour can mask all sorts of things. The trick is to tune the rules and culture to disallow or disincentivise anything that makes the game less fun while also keeping it balanced and unpredictable.

Edit: I've never seen so many people martyr though. I think a lot of people have genuinely had hurt feelings or felt a little rubbish due to the difficulty of picking up the game. It can also be super frustrating being told all day you're something you're not, like slamming your head up against a brick-wall.

^ Yeah exactly.

You basically have to assume that 100% of what happens in game is not personal or even an indication of someones character. That said also having rules to play nice helps.

The perfect game for a forum this size would probably be a mini-mafia game with 9 players 2 mafia and 24-48 hour fixed days and 12-24 hour fixed nights. Alternatively fixed weeks where you only need to post once or twice a day.

The best games I've participated in basically started at 'whatever' time and ended at 12am the next day. Once the night actions were in, they were posted up and the game continued until 12am the day after that, and so on.

Granted, they were hosted by a night owl - but it was a great way of doing it. It kept everyone on their toes, and days not dragging on meant that there was no sense of stagnation.

I'd be happy to host a game at some point if you didn't mind a newbie GM having a punt at it.

It would be nice if the next game had more roles, for example a serial killer/arsonist. I like this type of game more with 3rd party roles, where both the mafia and town run the risk of being NK'd.

Chaos ensues, with players not having much time to delve into the sacred depths of the human psyche but rather trying to squirt some semblance of normalcy out of a town grown feral with paranoia and desperation.

That kind of chaos entertains my mind.

Not so bad if you could go at your own pace, but other people set the pace, and you have to keep up... No excuses.

The first rule of forum Mafia is you do not talk about ongoing games.

the second rule of forum Mafia is YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT ONGOING GAMES!

Please read rules 1 and 2 of forum mafia. alsong with this (I don't mean to just dump on you), I like that you are thinking about the future of this game on this site. We don't have to do things the same as ANY site. We might as well make it our own.

Although people not in the game should probably PM each other for performance (or talk in the obs qt) to not effect anyone still in it.

Not typical, unless as hado said it's to mask something.

I am perfectly OK and actually encourage discussion of people's play, but only AFTER the game is over. Once the game is over, I don't care if you even start your own thread asking about what you can do to improve your play.

Actually, having a mafia advice thread sounds like a good idea.

I was trying to be a brat in at least one of my posts.

Think everyone bought it.

I repeat that you should pay really close attention to rules 1 and 2 of forum mafia.

I like what Gopher is doing right now. Discussion on the future of Mafia on this site is highly encouraged. This could also be a separate thread.

Dizzy was right on the mark when he said we need to figure out what forum mafia is going to be like on this site.

I think this game is great because of the drama, because of the QT posting and because of the role claiming. Everyone's getting all mad at each other for the wrong reasons, LOL.

I understand this can be a general statement, but please refer to rules 1 and 2 of forum mafia.

I just want to state that you should all read Dizzy's post. There are a log of nuggets in there that we need to discuss. We need to figure out how WE play the game here. Its a really exciting game and I think the people from this site have a ton of potential to be some really great players. While I don't know that I necessarily agree with Gophers suggesting about what is an ideal game on this site, I don't think he is totally wrong and I really like that he is thinking about what kind of games we should have on this site. I was actually thinking myself that it might be better to have a 9 player game at some point especially. Taking note of what Dizzy said, I expect people (like hado and others ofc) to start thinking about making games interesting by adding unique roles and mechanics. There is a world of potential for experimental games just waiting to be discovered.
