Nope, however, I'm not really a linux user, mostly because I'm terrible at it.

But, I know there's plenty of others.

Well I knew there would be another one but all the user-names I've seen so far are Windows...

Windows. Not my cup of tea. But that's just me...

Nah, I'm using OpenSUSE myself. There are quite a few, but really, most people are going to be using Windows so long as computers come with it pre-installed.

There are also some Mac users.

I don't think Windows is that bad: it's MS I utterly despise. :king-twitter:

Why do you think you are alone as Linux user?
I use Archlinux on my Desktop and Netbook. I used Debian before that. I had a few excursions trying out other Distros, but those always only stayed a few days. Arch is where my heart is :)

You may have ntoiced under the Users avatar here on the forum below Postcount there are two symbols, one for OS and one for browser.

If you have some things to ask or talk about concerning Linux/Free Software etc, i'd say just start it, there will be some people answering.

Used to use ubuntu... against my will I'm back on windows. My laptop's dead and I'm on my dad's old one, but normally (and once I get my laptop fixed/get a new one for my birthday, whichever comes first) I'll be back on ubuntu probably.

Look at the little icons on the left side of your screen... at each post, below the person's post count, it tells you what operating system and browser they're using.

There're a few times it's wrong... namely, windows 7 uses the windows 95 logo, and chromium (so probably chrome, as well?) show up as safari... but otherwise it's accurate I think.

I'm also on Arch... Wisp got me hooked on it, and I believe ogion got him hooked on it. I ended up moving away from Windows to Ubuntu because (believe it or not), Ubuntu worked with my campus' wireless network, while Windows did not. I then transferred over to Arch when Ubuntu released their latest update, and my sound broke (such that it was always on loud, and I had to physically open up pulse to turn the volume down every time I opened up a new program. Yuck.

Arch has given me absolutely no problems so far. Well, it used to have trouble reading my monitor to find out which screen resolutions were allowed, but that got fixed with an update about a week after I installed it. The only thing that's annoying now is that once in a rare while, my keyboard and touchpad both disconnect (two LED lights on my computer, next to the wifi one, blink simultaneously when it happens... one for caps lock, and I've no idea what the other one means)... forcing me to turn off the computer manually. Highly frustrating. However, I think this is due to my power cord, which has lost most of it's rubber coating at parts (so its' just exposed wires), and has been breaking slowly for a while now. I didn't have any problems until that started happening.

I have Linux on my laptops, but I usually use my computer with Win7 as it is compatible with everything and more software and new hardware.

I have Ubuntu on one laptop and trying to get the net book remix on my other one. Seeing as I use Ubuntu I guess it's debatable whether or not I'm a legitimate Linux user. Apparently, Linux should take me hours of work and maybe a headache or two. Not that I didn't have tons of issues with Ubuntu, but I guess Red Hat and such are where it's at.

So I guess I have a version of Linux, but I'm a Win user.

No.

That only prevents the mass adoption of linux.

I like linux because there are so many more cool things.

That said, Kubuntu is now causing a hell lot more headaches than it used to.

I love the whole open source moment. I'll probably install Ubuntu on my netbook when i get one.

Aye, Microsoft is a company without class.

I'm on Windows7 and it's not too bad. I've had a few problems but they are usually solved with a internet search.

While my main workstation runs Windows at the moment, everything I post goes through my Linux gateway and everything-server. I also have a pair of unused machines sitting idle at the moment which are looking like good candidates for throwing a distro or two on and mucking about with.

I'm currently trying to learn how to use linux.
I installed ubuntu a few days ago and it's quite nice.
But if I don't choose the OS when I start the PC it goes automatically to windows.
Have both in the same pc.

Both my laptop and my desktop dual boot Ubuntu Jaunty and Win7. I like to play games, so I'm in Windows more often than not. I do have an Ubuntu server next to me and a Mythbuntu box next to my TV though :)

I also occasionally try out other distros, but I don't care to spend the time tweaking them anymore, so I always return to Ubuntu.

A few months ago I switched from Xp to Ubuntu, I really loved the 9.04 version.... but... 9.10 still seemed to be too buggy for me.
As Ogion here recommended Arch Linux, I switched to it a week ago....
Though I still have to configure some stuff... most is done. Except sound is not working okay after few hours of idling.....

Because my laptop is more than three years old.... almost four years, and ati has no support on graphics card any more, somehow on Ubuntu, I still got graphics working as they are supposed to, but not on Arch. So my laptop was using cpu more and because of it, the fan was almost always on (I may be wrong, but so I figure). So I had to install and configure cpufreqd to underclock my laptop a bit with using scaling governors and configured settings.

If only graphics were working okay, I would be glad. Because of Arch I had to configure my laptop a lot more than with Ubuntu. I like it - to know why and how and have control over settings I didn't know with Ubuntu, were configurable at all.

If only graphics were working okay....:slashnew:

Hm, Madoness, did you try to get information/help in the archlinux irc channels on on the forum?

Not really... :p But I will try soon.

Though, I've searched different forums, and almost all have come to the same conclusion. That is - there is no real support on my graphics any more (I do have some support). Only way now seems to downgrade a whole lot to have graphics installed, but then again a lot of other programs will not work. Kind of lose-lose situation.

I have an ATI card on arch too. Radeon X1400 (my laptop is ~2 1/2 years old too). I haven't had any real 'problems' with it.... but I also don't play many games. Wesnoth and starcraft work, and in general that's good enough for me.

Anything 3d is noticeably worse.... for instance, I can't get Oblivion to play. It plays a few frames, freezes, plays a few frames, freezes, etc. The reason is mostly just because ATI doesn't care about their open-source drivers. They're developing far slower than the windows ones (and support may have even been dropped altogether now?), and the open-source drivers can't match ATI's windows drivers in power... at least yet. Needless to say, if I'm going to continue using linux on my next computer (which I almost certainly will), I'm getting an nvidia chip.

Are you sure it's your graphics card that doesn't work, and not something else? I don't have any problem with gui's at all.... it's just the 3d support that makes certain games kind of rough.

Archwiki is a fantastic resource... though I'm sure you've already found it, if you managed to install the system. I just use the open-source driver, and it works perfectly fine.... there's a whole page on installing it here.

Well... I've got ATI Radeon X200m. There is a possibility because you have a newer card, you still have the support. I did install open source drivers, but it seems, they're not working fully. I cannot change the card, as it is integrated.

I've already read the Archwiki page... seems I missed something before... I'll look into it.

Edit:

I did some more configuration... glxgears shows a little bit increase, from about 530 frames in 5.0 seconds on average to 630 frames.

Though... I'm most interested (I'm not installing compiz again, but it functioned with ubuntu, it does not with Arch - I have compiz-check installed.) why doesn't compiz work with Arch on my laptop? It worked with ubuntu. It still seems, graphics higher my cpu usage a lot more than with ubuntu, as if I'd have no graphics driver really installed because it is taken from my cpu.:slashnew:
