Damnit, and the reason I clicked was to bully you for your bad french :D.
Welcome back, even though I'm not sure I was actively around when you were here anyway :phear:.

Welcome back.

While the collective Pness of this place has definitely increased, I am saddened to point out that said fact does not apply to the collective intelligence of the place, and that in fact the opposite is true.

I trust you bring a sharp tongue, for there are many that need stabbing.

Its part of the cover art for the film Brazil, its really really good and everyone ever must see it and love it!

And I knew the French would catch an INTP's eye :phear:

Riiight, because I bet that I would have to look really far in the arena to find something physically improbable...:p

That sounds impossible.

To learn a langague in it's entireity, if you have nothing to compare to (i.e, if learning french with a purely french source, say, French natives or a Frenc dictionary) you have to learn the meaning fo each individual word in context.

Example, a french man lifting up a flower and screaming 'FLEUUURRR!!', then you could gradually build a vocabulary.

With a dicitonary, it's all just gibberish.

How to interpret what a word means if you can't read the meaning?

It is useless alone.

Still no.

You'd know the words, but not how to treat them in different context or form proper sentences.

And don't forget about sentence structure and verb conjugations, past/present/future tense uses of words, whether an object is feminine or masculine, the correct pronunciation of the words themselves... A language is far too complicated to learn simply from reading a dictionary, I think. Although that would be awesome if it were possible.

The best way to learn a language is to be born into that culture:D

Since we are on the subject.....

Well I have wondered if on could learn a language just by reading through a dictionary...

I think you mean one

Seems you forgot the H

Ah yes, I've seen you around here! Brazil seems like an appropriate INTP-ish film.

Welcome, again!

I know I'm late, but language is one of my biggest interests and French is my native.

I have to admit, the French in the title is pretty much perfect, the into is what bugged me most myself. Since I think my grasp on English is pretty good and I've been learning Japanese as a hobby, I also confirm that reading a dictionnary is not the right way to learn a new language. Going on a trip where it's the native language is great, nevermind being born there of course. Otherwise, just practicing and watching shows/listening to music in that language helps, too.

Otherwise, allow me to correct all further sentences.

Parlez-vous Français? Je suis en train d'apprendre.
A trick for the "z" here, you are just reversing the subject and verb to make the question, but it's still second person, plural, as in, "vous parlez". The «d'» is because without it, it's basically saying "I am learn" because "en train de" is how you make a verb progressive. And it's only «d'» because it's a vowel after "de", so the "e" turns to « ' ». Finally, the "ç" is because a regular "c" in French would sound like Frankais, but it's pronounced "Franssais".
Non, je parle seulement un petit peu français. Juste assez pour commander un hot dog.
This one's actually pretty good considering you're going from English to French. You could remove "petit" but "peu" has to be there, can't really explain. I guess you could say "peu" translates as "a bit" while "petit" actually translates as "small". Without "pour" however it would translate back as "Just enough order a hot dog.", obviously missing "to".

Everything else is fine.

I have a friend whose actually studying in translation in university. Basic thing they say is that all you may ever translate properly is from a foreign language to your native.

Similarly, feel free to correct my English, it's not perfect I'm sure, even if I don't count typos.

Oh, welcome back! :phear:
