Forum Outage and Postdisappearance

And no, I shall not participate here as a member. It gives too much weight to the owner since he or she always has the last word in disputes, and there's always the temptation to say 'This is how it shall be.' solely based upon the unstriven power of ownership. Power needs to depend upon legitimacy, not money. Besides which one-man-band forums suck.
I, ah... I disagree.

A totalitarian leadership derived from unquestionable power and thrust upon the shoulders of an INTP (whom didn't want to be a leader in the first place) by the democratic vote of an INTP populace is exactly what I believe this forum (and the world) needs. To that end I call a vote regarding if or not this community wishes Ragnar to participate as an active member in this forum, on the grounds that we trust him not to abuse his power, but even if he did, that we support the legitimacy of his claim to power anyway.

:D Vote here

Oh well, that seems like a Deus Ex Machine ending. :D

Odd, I remember that I looked in the ASO forums together with Jesin but we didn't found anything useful.
I just hope that moving isn't necessary and that we can fix the problems with ASO.

Anyway, update seems to be successful.

So, if I understand the situation correctly:

-The vBulletin software has been updated and is again working correctly.

-There will be probably be a period in which the administrators tinker with the specific settings which are now available?

-The forum outages and lost posts were from DDOS attacks on the forum's host and this issue may not be solved yet.

-There is currently neither flashchat, nor an arcade. These things may return?

-Also, Ragnar thinks the smileys are kind of awful, so perhaps there will be an upgrade on that front?

I agree, there is nothing wrong with a government of a few exercising power over the masses, as long as the authority to do so is authorized by those same masses. It is an acknowledged aspect of group dynamics. As a group there is a type of power as a plural entity, yet efficient use of this power is often determined by the manner of leadership and the means of delegating to group members rights and responsibilities...

coincidentally I selected this morning to upgrade vbulletin, which seemed to go ok.

That wasn't a coincidence. That was a bunch of INTPs and friends sending telepathic messages. See? It works! :D

WTF. I come back from a 1 week hiatus only to discover this place got borked yet again. And fuck, my evolution thread, but never mind.

What contenders are there apart from Ragnar?

Contenders?

A bunch of INTPs fawning for a leader?

Someone that posted only briefly noted that 'leading' a forum of INTPs would be like herding cats. It is and it should be.

You know... I'm all for rubbing round Ragnar's ankles a little just to convey some feline appreciation... but there's a line of dignity there. :D

:D
And for anyone that hasn't checked out some of the history of this place... the one and only request that Ragnar makes of us is that we don't institute rule by democracy.

Start making posts, people :P The forum will die if you don't! It seems like it's in a comma at the moment, we have to save it!

I swear, one day I'm gonna come to this place and it's going to be one big void. The background is already dark so it's not hard to imagine. Do we still exist? I'm scared.

When you can't be certain whether your posts will be lost or not it's quite hard to post anything serious.

Conversational foreplay is fine, at least it'll keep people from abandoning the forum while it's in a coma. :P

And... the ARCADE is back!

At this point, I guess I just have one question...

...Is there any hope of getting a reliable "all clear" sign about these forum crashes - or are we going to be waiting and watching for a long time?

Well I think what Saphire may be thinking is what we are all thinking. How much of our time and effort are we willing to invest in this forum again?

That's obvious.

Take resonsibility for yourselves and make your own decisions based on the fact that nothing can be guaranteed.

Owners, admins and mods do all they reasonably can... but that does not extend to protecting you from the vicissitudes of life.

I agree with lor.
If you post something that you really want to keep, then copynpaste that to your computer (open a file like "intpforumposts.txt" or something). Of course not only your own posts, but when you see a post that you really like from someone else it would not be too bad to save that one too for yourself.
Another possibility is the Firefox-plugin "Scrapbook", it lets you archive pages just as you see them in your browser at that moment. You could then for example go to your UserCP change the option to "100 posts per page" and then archive a few threads if you wish so, doesn't raelly take long.

But surely now that it's reasonably forseeable someone (or some people) owes everybody else a duty of care. :p

Then again we're not paying a single cent.

Ragnar was saying the crashes were because of denial of service attacks on the small orange host... Apparently, there was also quite the discussion about it over there. I couldn't find this.

Unless the attacks have stopped, or the hosting company has developed considerable skill and measures to take care of the issue, I find it reasonable to expect more crashes and losses to be imminent.

Considering it's an issue for quite a lot of this company's clients - I also would expect announcements and updates about the problem. That's what I'm interested in.

I understand that the staff isn't able to influence these events, but I think this is a pretty fair question to be asked - and certainly one that could be answered to some degree. For that reason I don't appreciate being ridiculed.

Wait, what? "Ridiculed"? I hope my post didn't appear to be that because it was definitely not my intent.
But the truth is that indeed a forum like this is not the most 'stable' thing there is. It certianly is not 'built to last'. Of course this is just a basic aspect of most electronic media, but still it's something that one has to know.
And a forum is even less redundant (and thus survivable) than distributed forms, like the old usenet.

As to asmallorange, i don't know what will happen in the future about those DDoS-attacks etc.
BTW, when was it that we lost two weeks of posts etc? Around the 26th of July? Maybe this was the reason.

Please don't take it personally Sapphire, it wasn't meant that way.

Currently we've been moved to a another server and we're giving things a chance to see how they settle down.
