Topic title is a complete fabrication, for I am neither female, over 30 or based in Ireland, or looking for young men.

Hi, I'm Leigh, and I'm an INTP ... allegedly. I'm a Welsh philosophy student, who excels at logic and has a mild loathing for Descartes. I'll probably browse and post more in the next couple of days once I get some sleep, and finish reading a few books on Buddhism I have to get through.

Also, that previous paragraph is the most I've ever said (wrote) to describe myself that I can remember.

Re: False advertising...

I hope you find this to be an enjoyable place Eljua. I'm sure you can find someone willing to engage you on each of those details above.

Myself, I'm interested in your Buddhism studies right now... What are you reading towards that end? I'm studying Buddhism currently (on and off...) Snowqueen recently directed me to 'Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism' which is the most profound book I've read on the subject...

Dwi wedi blino, ati? (About all the Welsh I picked up in 20 years. It just didn't interest me.)

Currently reading "An Introduction to Buddhist Ethics". This is completely for scholarly pursuits though, had I have been approaching the subject for pleasure I'd have probably taken a different route with my texts, probably have focused on texts regarding the nature of suffering. Of course focusing on texts regarding the nature of suffering would be a guaranteed way to fail exams, so I'm going to do that after I no longer need to focus on this particular milestone.

Wales? I love Wales!

Sorry man, if it makes you feel better had I been a 35 year old female, I'd be totally desperate.

Very smart. Your bars are all white. Confused me for about 5 seconds.

Nah, it's just so far away from my own personal experience that it's a foreign and alien existance, where the me I am now, and the me I will be then will have nothing in common save the shared experience of the first two decades. Unless I'm mistaken and everyone who claims to be over 35 is in fact the shambling unliving, forced to wander the dark curtain for all existance, but that'd be too awesome for words.

It helps bring some degree of colour to a bleak and meaningless existance. Try using that as an excuse next time someone accuses you of lying, then escape while they try to work out what you mean ;)

SUCCESS! To be honest I think the white is a bit too white; it shows up against the dirty colour of the background.

Hi Eljua,

Nice to meet you - when I return properly maybe we can open up a buddhism discussion thread

glad to see you're enjoying CTSM, Sapph - I agree it is an astounding read.

Actually I am reading a rather wonderful slim volume by Stephen Batchelor called 'Buddhism Without Beliefs' at the moment. Very 'back to basics' but done in a really clear and thoughtful way.

Love your writing style Eljua - given the miserable English displayed by most of my students it's a joy to read!

I look forward to it. Hopefully by then I won't be bogged down in Wittgenstein and Satre by then; The former being work and the latter being pleasure.

Thank you very much. Only been here for just over half a day, and I receive my first compliment in years. I'm chalking this one up to being literate.

Ok, that initially felt weird. I'm a 19 year old Irish male.

Mission accomplished. Pleasure to meet you, sorry about the awkwardness.

Welcome. I could make a joke about making a cliche welcome message but I'll refrain.

welcome

why the mild loathing for Descartes?

Because he tries so hard in his "Meditations", and yet ultimately fails at what he inititially set out to do, because he was so intent on proving his intitial claim, and wasn't able to accept that perhaps he was wrong. Lots of people make reference to him as this great person, yet amongst his greatest offers to the world were something he refused to develop.

I mean, come on. His most famous quote is "I think, therefore I am", and yet he couldn't actually explain what "I" actually is.
