i got a 10/20... but honestly i feel i'm better at reading actual facial expressions as opposed to horribly staged facial expressions (i mean seriously, 2nd from the bottom guy, if there was a "constipated" option i definitely would have picked that)
not to mention it's a lot more difficult without movement or context (and picking out of four, there's always going to be two of them that are just a little too similar)

ps, that asian guy... HE'S SO SAD :(

I agree with your observations.
I found picture number six in the spoiler slightly racist.

Yeah I was like, well this expression is an act, and this one... and... so I rage quit it.

16/20, but these faces look so horribly staged. I recognized most because I had 4 options, but if I was asked I would say "clearly faking" to most of them.

Too unnatural, from my perspective. Asian woman seemed more usual.

Not bad. Your score means you're slightly better than the average at reading expressions.

I think it is getting better with age (at least in my case)

I went the opposite from everybody. Give me fake faces and I get 17 out of 20. Give me real eyes and I give up halfway through because they never seem to list the expression I think the eyes are conveying.

:phear:

I scored 14/20, however I think the test is kind of bull. Like people have said, it's different when the emotions are staged and in addition to that there were definitely some there that could have been applicable to multiple answers. Still interesting though.

14/20. Strange test.

Sometimes there were two answers, depending on how you understood something. For example, fear and surprise can be pretty similar; shame and embarrassment can be pretty similar. Contempt and pride can be very similar. But there was always a discrepancy on why there could only be one answer. hmm

One face seemed completely wrong. Embarrassment was a man looking away smiling like he was trying to hide the fact that he thought something was funny or cute or amusing or perhaps embarrassed for another person. He wasn't gesturing to hide himself, but instead what he seemed to think and he didn't seem bothered enough to be embarrassed himself (he was smiling); it seemed more like he was verbally playing with someone and acting the expression for affect. I'm not sure how they decided he should be embarrassed. I'd like to think I'm reading into this too much, but I really don't think I am. I'm not retarded - it's off.

Shity test. Some of the answers where arbitrary. Upon mimicking the expression I could sense surprised interest in the 13th face which gets you a 50/50 chance at scoring the correct answer.

Furthermore, the blonde middle aged guy was not a good actor. On picture 2 where he was supposed to look happy he had a typical "politely posing for the camera and smiling" face on.

On picture 3 the answer is anger, but the guy doesn't look angry. Anger is expressed and perceived as a singular unified force. Yet the guy is pushing his eyebrows up (one of them more than the other as well) thereby looking not only angry but also baffled ie suddenly provoced or irritated. The emotion displayed a predecessor of anger, or an atypical subcategory of anger at best.

On picture 14 we see a case of sadness, regret, and; shame or embarrasment. Yet only sadness is the correct answer despite the obvious cues given by his downward gaze as he tries to avoid eye contact either out of shame of something he did or out of embarrasment over his own emotional state.

Number 17, looks polite, but also nervous. At least they didn't include nervous among the alternatives, screwing the item up like they did with others.

Overall I feel the dudes behind this test can suck my dick and aren't emotionally intelligent enough to device test testing emotional intelligence.

17/20. I really don't think being able to guess the emotions, given four choices, of actors faking expressions for still photos means I'm emotionally intelligent.

14 / 20, better than I anticipated, but the test really is questionable...

The funny thing is, when I talk to somebody I completely blur out my vision so I can completely focus on the voice of the person to find out emotions. Happens automatically and works quite well for me.

15/20 which is better than average. I think it would have been a more accurate test if the expressions had been real. I found that the beard obscured some mouth lines.

On the other hand it might be a good preliminary test for diagnosing Asperger's/Autism. There is another version of the test on the New York Times website that uses just eyes.

I'm an INXP by the way.

Hello Bonitatibus..
Do you have a link to that test you mentioned?
Reading eyes is especially challenging for me.

I got 16/20, surprisingly. Thanking Lie to Me for that.

Nonetheless I of course agree with everyone above: all of the expressions were painfully staged. I'd have failed the test if they weren't so...obvious. hahaha

I achieved 15/20 which is surprising and somewhat higher than expected considering I do not possess any emotions myself.....

I scored 9/20. I remember taking another test that had only eyes. I scored in the average range for that one.

I got 13/20. I think the test has tried to deliberately exaggerate the expression so make them more easily readable. That's probably why they've put the answers and descriptions of each expression after each question. Either that or it is just a really bad test :cat:

13/20. The test was terrible- the reactions looked completely unnatural, I'm pretty sure a bunch of them were simply wrong, and they're missing all of the context that allows you to read people properly. This test has almost nothing to do with emotional intelligence.

I wonder if I would be better with less-staged faces. I guess I don't know. I know that if I am a little above average, then this world is more screwed than we might think.

This test is silly because the reactions are non-genuine.

Number 1 in the spoiler looks like he's accidentally had a number 2 and is attempting to save face. ^^

I scored a 16/20, but I feel like it would be harder to read people in person because the facial expressions in this test were such huge exaggerations of themselves. Nobody would make such over the top faces in polite conversation.

16/20 and yes, those pictures were horribly dramatized. I once took a test that only showed the eyes and there were far more questions. The pictures looked very realistic too, if I find it again I'll post it.

If these people were actors on a show you would turn the channel and say this shit is cheezy and the actors are horrible.

Lesson of this story. Reality is the best test... and The Notebook because it is just awesome.

NOTE: I thought emotional intelligence has more to do with identifying and managing your own emotions as apposed to recognizing facial expressions.

I did not feel that the expressions were fake; they mostly felt real to me. I just felt what I thought the emotion was and answered, mostly without thinking. I don't know if I'm missing something or if everyone else is.

edit: I mean sure, they were staged, but it seems that they were actually feeling the emotion, for the most part.

The expressions are forced and misleading. The micro expressions are glaring and demonstrate other expressions. And they are not showing any body posturing to match the facial expression.

Usually facial expressions like "surprise" are followed by a drop in the expression to "relief." The temple would be relaxed and the forehead would not be as scrunched up.

They should not have used models for a facial expression quiz.
