Eight Functions

I just read the article on cognitiveprocesses and was actually surprised that the four functions we get from websites are actually the primary processes, with the remaining 4 as shadow processes.
All along, I thought that the rest were intermixed within the 4 that were talked about with the dominant in front and the inferior function at the back. And that the differences contributes to one of the many reasons why even people of the same personalities have different quirks in them.

When I took the assessment (found in an old forum post by Crypt, thanks for the link :)), it came back with

Based on your ranked responses to the 120 phrases...
Ti, Fi, Si, Ne, Te, Se, Ni, Fe.

Your Possible Type Code
According to the traditional sorting method of finding the most-used functional pairs (such as Fi-Ne), your type might be:
Possible result: INTP

We are also trying a new sorting method to try to indicate best-fit type. This method is experimental and may not match your type.
Possible result: ISTP

Your Developmental Report
Your pattern of responses indicates a developmental level in each cognitive processes. Since this is experimental, this report may be in error.

Fe - You are generally not aware of engaing in this process. You find it bothersome and unhelpful from others and question its value. You may mistake its use for something else. You may avoid or try to shut down situations that involve this process.

Ni,Te,Se - You notice this process and enjoy when others use it but only occassionally find yourself engaging in it. You may marvel at others who do it very well. It doesn't appear useful to you personally and can annoy you if others use it too much.

Si,Ne - You value this process as a helpful aid, even if you do not engage it that often. You trust it contributes to life, particularly when done by others who do the process well. You might recruit others to help you do this process for you.

Fi - You actively use this process in your daily life as a useful tool or helpful aid. You could live without it but use definitely contributes to the what you do and who you are. You can work with others using this process, usually in a support role.

Ti - You sustain and grow yourself and those around you long-term through this process. You are at your best, your peak creative and leadership moments when engaged in this process. This is a lead role; it is who you are and what you truly do.
The order which INTPs go in preference according to that website is Ti, Ne, Si, Fe, Te, Ni, Se, Fi.

Seems like the Tertiary function overtook the Auxiliary function for my case, and what is Fi doing all the way in front when it's supposed to be the 8th function for an INTP?
Is it possible for the Inferior function to be used so little that it gets pushed back into the shadows (pun not intended) and the vice versa for any of the shadow functions?
How do people exercise their shadow functions, do they use them consciously or unconsciously? Are there any clearer explanations on how the shadow functions work?

And for interest purposes, how are your functions ranked?
http://www.cognitiveprocesses.com/assessment/develop_old.html
I'm curious to see if there's a trend (not the one that is stated on the site) among the INTPs here.

Edit: Wow, 30 posts, I've achieved member status! xD

Ti, Ne, Si, Fi, Te, Ni, Se, Fe. Interesting that Fe came last instead of fourth... Often it's observed that certain INTPs appear "more introverted" than others, I'd bet the more introverted ones have Fe and Fi in that order switched around.

As for your question about the inferior function: Well, yes, it would appear so, given my results. Incidentally, both methods of sorting gave me INTP.

I got Ti, Ni, Ne, Fi, Te, Si, Fe, Se. I don't know how the hell to interpret these results. Oh and I don't consider myself to be very introverted. Both methods of sorting came up INTP.

I got Ti, Ne, Fi, Te, Si, Ni, Se, Fe with the first three relatively higher than the remainder.
It was interesting.

I thought Wolfman was ESTJ?

I took that test awhile ago, the first 5 were:

Ti, Ne, Ni, Si, Fe.
(I would like to be able to use Te. My dad is an ENTJ and I see him using it... it's impressive. But Fi and Se can SUCK IT.)

Ti, Ne and Ni were strongly developed, and the rest were kind of pathetically developed.

I got the allocations wrong at first. ESTJ is your standard Bully, usually a bureaucrat. Wolfman (ENTJ) is the Sheriff. The Deputy is a Hawk (INTJ).

You have been judged.

I can now use some of my shadow processes consciously, but I spent most of my life ignoring them for the most part as an unexplained novelty.

The Deceit shadow one for the INTP, is called Magic Village (borrowed term rather than my invention).

Te, Fe, Ti and Fi were the top and all equal. Is this unusual? They suggested I am INTP or INTJ. I am all P, but my top four processes were judging functions! What is going on?

I had a pretty strong Ni too, it was right below Ne. I have a feeling that the Ti-Ne functions naturally help the development of Ni. Just guesswork though.

^INTPs don't give demented bear hugs!

Anyway I don't understand how they came up with INTP with that information. Ti and Ne are equal, which could indicate I or E, but your tertiary function is Feeling, which is ENTP. I suppose if you add up the numbers your I function is higher, but - hmm.

I'm a lot like you actually, judging by some of your posts. I wonder if we're some new type? Choc might be one as well; she's more introverted and Ti than she "should" be.

There were options below with questions relating to your opinion of the functions. Was it learned, etc. Perhaps this was a significant factor--or they are mainly used for the secondary typing.

Your extraverted functions appear to be more dominant than the introverted ones (higher up on the list). Since ENTPs and INTPs have the same functions, except with the order slightly different, I suppose they gave more priority to the amount of E you had than the dominance of Ti over Ne.

Ah, cheese, that makes a lot of sense. I like that theory. They put the Ne and Fe in the same category, as functions I use well and frequently. They put the Ti as 'who I am'. I'm not sure I agree with it, I would put both the Ne and Ti as who I am and the Fe in the second category, just based on my own impression of myself.

But it was interesting how they had both basic and sophisticated skills. So while I may have been 'born' with certain amounts of Ne and Ti, I've been developing the Ti much much more so would have more of the sophisticated Ti skills whereas I may have very few of the sophisticated Ne skills...this is interesting to me because it suggests that the order of the functions can change depending on how one develops oneself...

Same kind of thing goes for me. Ti is definitely my strongest function by default. I'm definitely an INTP, but I've nurtured my Ne to the point that I'm ambidextrous and could pass as an ENTP if I weren't so reserved.

Choc:
Yes, and this also relates to what we talked about once on another thread. I think we were discussing the possibility of your dominant function being an introverted one (Ti) while still being an overall extrovert and hence ENTP. This seems to suggest it is highly possible, as long as the strength of all your E functions outweighs that of all your I ones. This makes sense actually.

Ermine: how did you nurture your Ne? Was this a conscious choice or a consequence of your chosen field of study/job?

A question that pops up from there: so it seems that strengthening the second function up to or greater than the first is quite doable. What about the others? How much harder does it get to strengthen the tertiary, inferior, the rest way down on the list? (I don't know if these questions are considered on topic or not; I apologize if not).

Both. I've wanted to be more spontaneous and fun for years, and it's also due to my chosen field of study, art. It's all about pulling ideas out of thin air and making connections and visualizing them. I also haven't done much to deliberately strengthen my Ti. It was just there as an instinct and a nuisance.

I really hope some of the older INTPs (past 30) could answer that for all the younger ones here. I don't even know where to begin, other than grow up, mature, and have more experience.

Err my second to last function should be Fe.

As someone well over 30, I can say that changing your essential nature does not get easier. What does get easier is coming to terms with it. You learn to stop trying to be the things you're not, while extending that same consideration to others. You also learn to rely on others who possess the things you lack when necessary.

I struggled developing my "E" for most of my life. After decades of being implored to "open up" and to "come out of my shell" (its amazing how many times I heard these cliches), people have generally stopped making these comments about me. While I'm still a unapologetic introvert, I realize that initiating small talk is required to connect to certain people. I always remind myself that the mindless chit-chat often leads to something more meaningful.

The J function comes more naturally for me (sometimes I think I'm a borderline INTJ). Plus, my profession and my bodybuiling hobby, both of which require decisiveness and self-discipline, have helped cultivate my "J." I suggest setting goals for yourself, and begin working towards those goals. This will activate and nourish your J function.

BTW, I feel both honored and slightly disconcerted to be regarded as one of the "older" INTP's here.:o

According to the traditional sorting method of finding the most-used functional pairs (such as Fi-Ne), your type might be:

Possible result: ENTP

Initial reaction: Wait, what? How did I get that E? I am the least extroverted person that I know... *boggles*

After I've thought about it for a while - maybe I've just got a developed Ne, and the test got ENTP because that is their dominant function?

@ truthseeker, it's not all that old, but it seems that most people are more established and mature by then. And it's relatively old by online forum standards.

Possible result: INFJ

We are also trying a new sorting method to try to indicate best-fit type. This method is experimental and may not match your type.
Possible result: INTP

That's weird I guess.
