Tattoos: I don't and I wouldn't want one. Somehow a painful experience that is permanently stuck on your body and can be used to identify you doesn't appeal to me at all.

Earrings: I don't have and wouldn't want one either. I don't think I can describe the reason why, but I see them as obstacles to normal function. Not only that, but I also don't think it would feel good to have something not natural partially inside me that wouldn't bring me any benefit except looks, and I don't care about my looks.

I think I'm going to get a tattoo soon, I used to think I would never want one but I've just recently got obsessed with the idea of a small one on my hand representing music in some way, not sure why I think my growing obsession for the guitar might have something to do with it. I would only get a small discreet one though.

I suppose if it means something to you it's nice. I hate when people get a tattoo for the sake of it (it's usually a star)

Otherwise, ears pierced, thats it. And I never wear earrings anymore so...

I have stretched ears. I guess I might want a tattoo but I haven't thought of anything I'd like there permanently yet.

Potentially short-term obsession isn't a good judgement point.

Russian inmates get tattoos all over their bodies depending on what they did time for and how many times.

I have three tattoos and six more planned.

I have my left ear pierced twice and my right ear pierced once. My nose pierced and my navel pierced.

I used to have my left ear pierced up high in the cartilage, my left nipple and my tongue. All I took out because they were problematic for me for different reasons.

I'd like to get my lip pierced but I don't know if I will, I'm thinking about piercing both ears again soon. I've got the needle and rings to put it. (all of my piercings, aside from my tongue and my first ear piercings I did myself, oh and I guess the cartilage piercing I used to have in my ear a friend did.)

No tattoos, no earrings. What are they for? Attention obviously. I try to avoid that most of the time.

Aware of this, by "soon" I did actually mean wait a few months then decide. I don't think my obsession with music is short term either, love the stuff, always have :)

I have two normal earring piercings in each ear, plus a conch and a helix in my left. I also have a navel piercing. However, I'm reluctant to pierce things that would result in diminished functionality (like tongue piercings, etc.) I'm not much into piercings that get in the way or make a large spectacle.

I'd like a small tattoo at some point, but -- while I can appreciate large tattoos / sleeves on other people, the reality is that tattoos are basically forever (unless you want to blow a lot of money and pain to try to remove them if possible) and I don't like making that much of a commitment.

So you could sum it up as "versatility" or "flexibility" -- I like them as ways to express myself or allow me ways to express who I am, but I don't like to be locked into certain expressions (such as with permanent tattoos, or ear spacers, etc.)

As far as I'm concerned, earrings anywhere aren't flexible. They seem so uncomfortable, wherever they may be.

Since you've mentioned self-expression, I started wondering: do earrings express anything? Tattoos can be customized pictures, but an earring is a piece of metal. As I see it, it can express rebellion by saying that you don't want to be like everybody else or, if those are fancy things hanging from your ears and you're a woman, that you're trying to look rich.

P.S. Googled "ear spacers," they look disgusting. Yuck. Never seen anybody in real life with that thing. I wonder if the holes can disappear after they are removed.

No and no. And, in related news, I wear one piece of jewelry: my wedding ring. And I don't wear fragrances of any sort (my shampoo, soap and deodorant are all fragrance-free).

That said, my wife has pierced ears, a pierced nose, enjoys jewelry and the occasional synthetic odor, and, someday, might dye her hair blue (or purple, or green or whatever).

My own choices simply reflect a desire not to draw attention to myself (and the fact that ornamentation seems irrelevant to me). Her choices stem from something-I-know-not-what, but, I love her and not the content of her choices, so, her choices are okay with me..

I have an idea for a pair of tattoos, each on my upper pectorals. Had the idea for a while, but I am not in a position to get them, and probably won't be for a few years. If I still like the idea at that point then I suppose I will go through with it.

Wanted to pierce my lip when I was younger but I'm glad I didn't. It messes up your teeth, I hear.

I have neither. I was considering getting a twin neck guitar (see left) tattoo'd on the underside of my left forearm. Still debating.

Although, what I would really like is an LED clock strip running the length of my forearm that can only really be seen at night. This however would require somehow sliding the LED strip under the skin in a way it isn't rejected by the body.

It would also have to be very flexible and perhaps biologically powered or have a battery that can be easily replaced somehow...

Considering to pierce my ears. Just sold a boat, I wasn't there. My father said by the phone that the buyer had tatoes, it was an alternative type, for sure. ... lol...naa...I said, might just be artistic....Told him it was an excellent buyer, didn't ask any questions.

Depends on how big they're stretched to, how stretchy the individual's ears are, and how long it took for them to get there (that is, if somebody took it slowly much less scar tissue would form and they'd be more likely to shrink back).

I'm in real life :borg:

I probably saw 3-6 people with plugs today. Where do you live? They seem more popular in southern California; when I lived in northern California I only saw maybe half a dozen people in two years with them.

I'm pretty sure they won't disappear, though you should probably ask this girl...

I can take mine out and show you a picture :D Seriously. I'll PM you it. Or post it!

I'm starting a website called plugsuberalles.com , a political party for people with stretched ears. I already have the domain name, just have to make it nice and then write a bunch of articles about stretched ears (I got a ton). Probably come up with a manifesto.

Are you really this ignorant about earrings? Honestly, your response seems so.... narrow and with very few angles explored.(Aside from the fact earrings are often made of a lot of things besides "a piece of metal.")

you can buy really cheap, really unique looking danglies... and those are simply one style to wear. I think the most expensive pair of earrings I have are some tiger eyes I bought in NYC for $40, because it was my birthday and a special trip, but most of my earrings are a few dollars, maybe $8 max. Studs, hoops, danglies, large bangels, the list goes on and on, and it changes what your entire outfit looks like and how you come across.

And if you look at women, you'll see that the types of earrings they wear often fit their personality. I don't find them uncomfortable either, although you need to be careful you don't wear ones that are too heavy for your ears, and that you don't get them caught on something. But that's usually not a problem.

So what kind of art do you like? Just curious if it is more artsy/abstract than what you're expressing here. Or are you a modernist or hyperrealist, or what exactly?

Earrings look good and can bring out or compliment an outfit. I'm a fan of quality earrings on women. I think it's an attractive quality in women for them to be self-expressive in their style choices, and to wear what they feel like wearing.

It's a form of self-expression, no different to how you might choose to groom, your choice in clothing, whatever. That is the function, there doesn't need to be anything more.

I have a stud in each ear, not interested in more. I think good tattoos are cool, but I wouldn't know what to get. Some representation of a musical artist, but I wouldn't know who/what to choose exactly. Would be a half sleeve from shoulder to elbow so that it's covered by a shirt, partially visible in short sleeves and visible when I'm wearing a singlet in warmer months.

Well most of them I see are metal, rarely I see plastic or something else. Earrings that don't require holes sometimes have amber in them, sometimes some other stones, but that's fancy earrings, mostly used by women who care a lot about how they look, they usually have fancy dresses as well, etc.. So yea, for me "a piece of metal" sounds rather good.

I do agree that it should express your likings, however around here I see three cases:

  1. Black dressed girls with died hair, often black lipstick, etc., who's got lots of metal all over their bodies.
  2. Popular, but not aristocrat-fancy clothes wearing girls with $100 haircuts, fancy phones, stance like they own the world and either a piece of glass in their nose or a piece of plastic in their chin along with (usually) hoops hanging from their ears.
  3. Fancy (The price, not the popularity) dressed girls with, I assume, dangles, real fancy haircut. Sometimes they have small glass (or something that looks like glass, diamond? :D) studs in their ears.

The rest usually can't afford earrings or have really uptight parents, find them disgusting or inappropriate, or don't care about them.

I am not aware of any other types around here... So yea, not much expression explicit to the earrings going on.

I'm not into visual art. I don't go off by watching paintings, I don't care about clothing. I listen to music, but that's not visual art. I do use Photoshop sometimes (when necessary) to tune some web design angles, I'm not very good at it, likely because I don't use it often. When I'm choosing a wallpaper, I usually am looking for something futuristic or some sort of fantasy style wallpaper.

Each of my ears are pierced once in the standard way, but I usually don't wear earrings.

I really enjoy drawing/painting on skin, and my left arm usually has some sort of sharpie tattoo on it. If I were to ever make the commitment to get a tattoo, I'd want to get an eye on each of my wrists, like so:

[bimgx=500]http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lqhw9nsrWC1qfvkydo1_1280.png[/bimgx]

Too many of the people closest to me have been cutters at some point in their lives--I've been one of them-- and to me this would represent increased awareness towards other peoples' suffering. Eyes in general also represent, to me, being the passive (or even not-so) observer; they represent knowing and truth and they absolutely fascinate me.

My entire life, I've also been obsessed with wings. But I've always thought that getting a tattoo of wings on your back was really cheesy, so I came up with an alternative. There's this type of tattoo called scarification, where instead of injecting ink into your skin they remove or otherwise destroy the flesh itself. This is done through the use of chemicals, heated metal, or knives. The resulting scar is the tattoo. (If you don't like blood, don't google this.)

l.jpg

My idea is to get two ragged lines, about a foot in length and an inch wide, just inside of my shoulder blades (on my back). Then it'd be like my wings had been removed. I wouldn't have to worry about it being perfect, either, because it's supposed to look like a real scar :3

But right now I'll stick to sharpie.

I have 17 piercings, Celtic patterning down both arms, an eagle on my chest, the Southern Cross on across my back and a black line connecting my eyebrows for the self-inflicted mono-brow.

jk

I have a pierced eye brow and that is all. It is not at all uncomfortable and it was not at all painful to get done (though it was expensive!). If I were to get a tattoo it would have to be both extremely clever and visually appealing, without being too explicit or bringing too much attention to myself. Something along the lines of:

I always liked fake tattoos when I was younger but I won't ever get a permanent one as I can see how it would irritate me very much, I wouldn't be able to accept it as a part of me.

As a guy I think earrings are too feminine/unnecessary/inconvenient. I don't like any accessories actually, no hats/watches/rings/necklaces/scarves for me. They all make me feel restricted which is why I like to wear loose clothes like a t-shirt and shorts most of the time.

I have two tattoos, one on my wrist and one on my shoulder. The wrist one is the Hidden Leaf Village symbol from Naruto and the other one is a rocket from the drawings of my favorite artist Sam Brown.

And this is a drawing I did for the next tattoo I want. It's a black soot from the Miyazaki movies. <3

I am not really into piercings. They kind of gross me out haha. My ears are pierced but only because my mom had them done when I was a baby.
