almost every other male i know has some raging passion for college/professional sports. i really have tried to understand what makes it so interesting, but since i was a little kid i could just never grasp what on earth made watching sports so darn interesting. i have come to accept that i just don't care.

i would like to know if this is a common thing in INTPs or just me

Sports on TV bore me to death for the most part. I like football if it's a good game or a team I like. I like NASCAR, but only clips of really horrible wrecks. (Aren't I a terrible person?) I like pretty much any sport live though. Something about crowds screaming makes me happy.

Boring... lots of guys always talk about it and bond with each other that way and I'm the guy left out because he doesn't give a crap.

I like stocks over sports, I can give you a good analysis of a company and how it's doing relative to its competitors and how the industry is holding up. Now that's interesting!!! *I shout as yawns echo from around the room.*

I hate watching sports, especially on TV. The only way you can make me care is if I'm playing or my team is playing.

On that topic, guys who live vicariously through watching their favorite teams play disgust me.

I'll watch sports if it is on and someone else is watching, not too keen, but is fun to watch, once you understand the rules and strategies involved. Here in Canada the big thing is hockey, followed by american football.

No. No, no. And I would never like my husband to watch sports either. Thankfully I am prone to picking moderately like-minded friends and mates.

I like to play sports, rollerblading, tennis, yoga. But I only do the latter because i don't do sports in front of strangers.

I actually do. However, I don't think I like them for the same reasons most people do. It seems that most people like watching athletic feats or big plays (slam dunks, home runs) which are cool to a point, but it's really the strategy and the mind games of sports that get me hooked. Like how one team exploits an opponent's weaknesses or how a coach chooses to play out a key sequence. It's all kinda like a fun mental exercise for me. I also like the drama of a close game.

Of course, like many, I am annoyed by most sports fans, especially the ones who take it too seriously. This article is a good example of sports fan stupidity:

Televised sports are.. shameful to say the least. When i was younger, a pretty interesting old man i randomly had an encounter with mentioned how he couldnt understand the "fanatism" and how all the people across the world could spend so much money to promote something so trivial (i later found out fanatism is not the right word for what he was saying, but i understood)

This is another example of the danger of typecasting people, even according to their MBTI types. While I eschew many traditionally male hobbies such as hunting, fishing, and beer-drinking, I am quite passionate about the NFL, college football, and to a lesser extent, NBA and MLB. I grew up in Miami, so I root for all of the locally based teams: Dolphins, Heat, Marlins, Hurricanes.

In a sense, my passion for Miami sports teams contradicts my nature and temperment. Logically speaking, whether these teams win or lose does not effect my life in any way. Still, much like my tatoos, they're an indelible part of me, and whether they win or lose (particularly the Dolphins) does affect my mood in the short-term. Also, being a sports fan allows me to bond with other guys, when otherwise, it would be quite difficult for me. Still, one can be a sports fan, lead a balanced life, and maintain intelligent conversations about a variety of other topics.

I can't stand sports-- I can't understand why so many people get so worked up over it. One of my classmates once asked me why I wasn't happy that the school volleyball team won a championship. i didn't know what to say in response-- why should I be happy that someone else did well in something when I barely knew their names?

This fairly well illustrates my views on sport (not exactly the same, but it's easier than writing them-- that would require thought and effort that I'm loath to spend on something I dislike so much). The problem is that the 'I don't like it, you do, so leave me alone about it' approach doesn't work particularly well in this community-- everyone basically plays sports (meaning GAA or soccer, because there's nothing else) and anyone who doesn't is in the extreme minority. Of about 1%.

Sports can be best understood as an abstraction of the male need to prove themselves, as such by participating in sports or following sports people attach themselves to a team and compete either directly or by proxy. Now if you see the entire base need to prove yourself to others pointless (because it is) this will seem mysterious to you. Sports is a good way to prevent men from shooting each other it also happens to be good for you physically so while I think watching sports teams is asinine, really who gives a shit who wins?, I think it is important to participate as it gives you a commonness with your fellow men that it otherwise hard to approximate.

Well, while I don't particularly care for sports I still enjoy watching events that Ireland take part in.

@sagewolf Were you happy when Ireland won the grand slam?

People talking about sports makes me homicidal. I have a friend who watches a lot of football and nascar, i have told him so many times that i really don't care at all and listening to it basically makes me mad but he still runs on about it every time something happens.. sitting there watching me..knowing that i am completely ignoring him..and he continues..sometimes to the point i do just get angry and start getting sassy. I cant remember when it was exactly but i think it was tom bradey..cant remember the teams name, but anyway.. he was injured and out for the season apparently and when my friend told me that, he seemed so mad about it, and i told him "HA im glad". I do this all the time.. almost every time someone mentions nascar i tell them that i hope every team wrecks thier car and they dont have enough cars to run a race..then nascar goes out of business and all the tracks are turned into farmland and animal sanctuarys.

I do like F1 racing, autocross racing.. basically actual courses instead of a big circle. While it is still very boring and not something i consider a suitable use of those materials, land, the time and effort, etc. It is at least more active and requires more skill. (really the only racing i will watch is if its the kind of cars i like.. like hondas (VTEC is the most amazing valve timing system ever) and maybe some old turbo 4 cylinder volkswagons... a Geo metro with a ford escort motor... i think you get the idea LOL little tiny front wheel drive junkers to smoke tires around some back streets in.. Of course.. i dont think many INTPs would be into cars would they? hmmm i love cars *drool* ughhh... off topic.. Bye

VTEC Has long been surpassed by things like Vanos which achieves the same impact without the Jekyll and Hyde character thats characteristic with vtec. VTEC is also of limited use in larger engine sizes where alternatives such a properly designed turbo can get alot more power in a much more civilised fashion.
Vtec was state of the art at one point, but the industry has moved on.

The only thing that causes VTEC to keep a special place in my heart is that it's heart and soul is all mechanical as opposed to electronic, switching camshaft timing while the engine is on is miraculous enough but doing it at 6500 RPM is something that should stilll be admired 10 years hence.

I like sports and find it relaxing to have on. Even if I'm doing other things, looking in on occasion while I do relaxes me. I find it harder and harder to sit and just watch the whole way through unless it is an important game involving one of my favorite teams. Some people take it way too far in their fanaticism but that can be said about damn near everything.

In order I like NFL, NHL, NCAA Basketball, NCAA Football, MLB, NBA. I hate racing of any kind because it is just going in circles. An apt metaphor.

@ifloatthrulife: i also like cars, but not because of racing, i just really like things with a multitude of parts which can be customized and upgraded. this is also why i want to build a computer.

/agree with Glovehead. Cars are the best! Racing is fun as hell, the adrenaline rush is second to none. It's also a blast to upgrade and customize.

Glad to know I'm not a complete stereotype INTP then - I absolutely love sports, playing or watching, and a lot of my friends I initially got to know through mutual appreciation of sports. It's one of the joys of life for me - there's nothing like the thrill of making a break or scoring a try etc. I don't follow heaps of different sports though, mainly just NRL (rugby league) and cricket, and if there's a big event on like the soccer world cup I'll get into that too.

LoL @ banana mango- i love being a stereotypical INTP.. even though im not really..i have the same views as would normally be expected by an INTP..but to more of an extreme.

And cars... i love them so much, not only the complexity of the machine itself, but i also get to express myself through cars. Like with everything else i discuss with people, i have a slightly different opinion than most people, where i live the average guy is either into pickups with lift kits... or domestic "muscle cars"... where i completely hate both, i am all about power to weight ratio and high rpm power. (which is the main reason i love Vtec(plus it just sounds so amazing) but yeah..im way off topic with this car shit... but yeah..run corvettes into walls and sell the parts to buy a honda with a carborated Vtec swap & a turbo... ROFL

Depends on the sport and how good the people playing it are. I dislike watching mediocre teams. I also hate watching baseball, basketball, and golf. They are too slow moving for my tastes.

Saturday, you meet your mates at pub opening time, have a few lagers and maybe a gerasy sarnie or burger, 2 o clock make your way to the hawthorns (my teams ground insert your own if needs be) have a quick pint before kickoff. shout abuse at the ref, your team and / or opp team for 45 minutes, go to bar have a quick pint or two and a pie, go back out and repeat abusiveness for another 45 mins. Go to pub and either a) drink to celebrate a good performance or b) drink to console a miserable defeat. About 9 or 12 (depending on mood) go to curryhouse, order hot vindaloo and lager. finish meal go home collapse, wake up about 4 am get undressed wake girlfriend /wife up, sulk til you at least get a hand job (too much info perhaps) come then fall straight back into a comatose sleep. wake up sunday afternoon to a list of chores you have to do because of sexual relief last night. maybe throw up a little whilst gardening with the mother of all hangovers.

What do you non sporties do on your weekends?

yes but that also happens throughout the week, I feel you need to mix it up a little on weekends so they feel more like a break from the weekly grind. Unless of course your career is all you think about and hate to be seperated from it.

Things that I want to devote a large chunk of time to: for instance, I draw nearly every day, but on a Saturday or Sunday, I'll take out a sketch or a doodle that I want to develop or I'll get an idea that I've had out of my head and down onto paper. I can spend as long as I like doing this, which is nice and results in better work than working in half-hour snatches does. And I can do that without getting completely pissed by 5pm: ineed, for my art's sake, it's probably better I stay sober.

@The Fury: You're taking the mickey. Ireland won something? I know enough about sport to know we suck. :p (Real answer: I didn't even notice. I'm about as invested in national identity and patriotism as I am in sport, so I don't notice much of what Ireland 'achieves' on the pitch.)
