I'm leaning to those. After some more votes here to allow enough time --- 28 votes so far, about half preferring the vBulletin default gif smilies --- I'll close and start a new poll, including any suggestions here. Only through relentless self-examination and willingness to change can the steel be tempered.

Of course the adoption of one set of standard smilies, with selections from allied packs, in no way precludes either keeping the old ones accessible from the expanded tray, or including random smilies; it merely means these are the 15 first to hand and representative of the forum ethos. Or Geist.

What if we kept the standard old smilies (modified) on the main editing page while having a link there saying "more emoticons" which would open a window that contains all other smilies which aren't a part of the first set?

The INFJ forum has something like this. Could this also be done here? This way satisfies both sides. Those who prefer the old ones can keep them while all additional smilies could be placed in that extra window.

That is roughly what I said; the link to the expanded tray appears automatically if one uploads over a certain number of emoticons.

The question is whether the standard smilies shown are the default [ old ] smilies, or a distinctive new set, such as Anthile's green smilies.

I've seen some people on other forums say they prefer smilies to be denoted in such a way that could not be typed accidentally, and don't like it when boards replace text smilies with images. For example,

:D

should be displayed as a colon followed by a capital D, and the image should be denoted by something like :grin:.

I personally agree with that, but then there's the question of how to implement that without mutilating existing posts. I mean, we could theoretically run a script to replace all instances of the colon-D (outside of code tags and such) with :grin:, and so on. Or something like that.

And then there might be some who would oppose such a change.

OK, Anthile's smilies are now in. I'm closing this thread partly since the upload of those has altered the integrity of the disputing posts by ineluctably substituting Anthile's smilies for the ones which referenced either the ancients or the second set laid out in the first post.

However, a new thread will be created for people to paste further tiny objects of desire.
