Can We Turn on Reputation?

On the other forums I frequent, reputation is turned on (just to positive comments), and you can leave someone a note via the rep button that is easier than either a PM or an in-thread reply. It's nifty. Can we turn it on?

Isn't it anonymous? I'd like this, mostly for its affording an even more extreme degree of anonymity in saying things at people than typical member-to-forum/member interaction does. It might curtail tangents popping up in people's threads, also. It's a different version of vBulletin (at INTPc) that allows repping, might not be something that can be done in this particular type. If that's the case, I don't think it'd be worth it - changing versions (the main reasons why this won't be done were outlined in a thread somewhere, I think). This place is magical as it is...couldn't be more magical if it tried. God Dammit.

Anon repping sounds like a good way to start drama. But I guess that is better than nothing.

The reputation system is useful, but it can lead to a lot of bitching, because people never agree on how the system is used. Most people do enjoy the use of it though cause it allows for quick private side comments.

I recommend implementing it.

I've seen the reputation thing done before. I think it hinders intelligent discussion. If you want to know who has a lot of "reputation" just hang around for a while. God forbid we should have to spend a little time actually getting to know members and shit. No, no. I think we should set up a pointless arbitrary system by which we all "vote" for...what exactly would we be voting for? Oh yeah, I remember: "LoL! I SAW WUT U DID THERE!"

If we wanted to be just like all those other forums out there then maybe we would. I like our discussion oriented forum. If you want drama then go to another forum. I want to talk to people that aren't preoccupied with their "reputation". This isn't junior high anymore.

Edit: Okay, okay. I can see how having the ability to have quick private side comments would be useful but there's got to be a better way.

Well from what I've seen on other forums it gets kinda pointless. Everyone has great reputations or horrid ones. A better system is needed, like granting various ratings for like...

-Quality of Posts
-Supportive Posts

Or some such, but that'd just be a pain to implement.

No because

-reputation circlejerks

-it doesn't mean anything

-people will post stuff for the reputation's sake and vice versa, people will stop posting controversial stuff

-if you need some arbitrary number to determine whether or not you agree with someone, you are already beyond help

-you can use the profile messages to leave someone a quick message and a lot of people already do this

-because no

Y'all are taking it way too seriously. Who cares who has the most rep points? It's all about leaving the comments. I love getting and giving them. They're like the Valentine's Day cards in elementary school... a fun, meaningless distraction that you run to read as soon as you get them.

But, but, I don't feel like I have an actual reputation unless I have points.

Also, I do agree this place could be more RPG.

Okay, folk... solution a or b?

a) everyone go leave a funny visitor message on Methuselah's profile.

b) Melkor.

Why would we want reputation turned on? I don't want him turned on. If you turn reputation on and he humps you don't come crying to me.

Seriously though, please don't. Just... no. I come to this sanctified dark castle to get away from all that pointless lighthearted crap the world throws at me every day, please don't let the infestation spread here too.

I vote solution A. While I agree that in the short term Melkor would be much more humorous he does tire easily. Poor fellow. I think what we need to do is tag team Methy with Melkor leading the way...

...though I fear both Melkor and Methy may enjoy it too much...

Is anybody else suspicious that this Methuselah is a new persona developed by Melkor in an attempt at sounding more posh? He does come across as a bloated alter ego of Melkor...

Can we have a reputation system with the option not to participate?

Or can we have a reputation system just for me?
I like feedback, even if it's negative, because you can't hate me without caring.

Actually I could just create a thread for that... well nevermind then.

We just used reps on other forums as a way to respond in one-liners to someone's posts, if the response isn't really worth a full PM (and thus would also eat into one's PM total count quota), yet isn't the sort of thing you want to leave on someone's public Wall space.

It is pretty handy that way.

... and not so handy in regards to actually using it as rep, since rep is used and abused and everything in-between and isn't truly indicative of someone's actual forum reputation... or at least no one can agree on whether it is or not. Too much headache than it is worth, using it as an actual reputation system.

I don't like the number system. Reputation based on patterned behavior in the form of titles I would prefer: argumentum ad populum.

I still find it immensely humorous that the INTPs want to limit their forms of expression because "we can't handle it, man!"

Perhaps the "Thank You" hack would be a less controversial way to let people know their insights were appreciated? I often want to say "good point," but making an actual reply for each post is just too cumbersome and frivolous.

For some reason I seem to be trying to herd cats. Cats so smart that they're retarded.

See howtolearnanylanguage's implementation. It's pretty good, except I have more points than posts, and so I'm afraid to post anything that isn't high enough quality to get feedback.... wait a second...

So... there's no way of making it so you can leave comments to people for their posts, without also having a reputation point system?

...Really?

I know I'm joining the party a bit late and what I'm going to type has probably already been mentioned, but I'm far too lazy right now (or all the time really) to read through all of the previous posts so I'll just get on with it.

I personally think the reputation system is useless. If you care to judge someone's character based on their posts then do your own research instead of going off of what other people have rated the user as.

Also, reputation points also tend to be fairly biased (though my only experience with the system has been on the INFJ forum so it is in fact fairly limited) as people generally give them when they agree with a statement and not according to its overall value.
And last, if you wish to leave a short comment for someone, why not just address it on their user profile. Isn't that what that space is for?

Just thought I would mention these have a way of forming cliques. If that is wanted, then you might as well do this.

I probably don't post enough for it to matter, but personally, I've felt awkward in forums where people rep me up or rep me down, as if I am supposed to seek their approval and only post if it is something they want to hear rather than someone I want to say or think I should say.
