Best in what way? Can we even know who was best? The truth behind things is often concealed. For all the best known presidents, I'm sure they have strong faults. For the supposedly worst presidents, I'm sure they have their strengths.

George Washington because he was first, didn't even really want the position, and was probably the least corrupted from it.

They've all been pretty horrible. Universally.

It kind of takes an asshole to be the leader of a country.

Edit: Washington sided with Hamilton over Jefferson. Enough said?

President Marge Bouvier from the episode of The Simpsons when Homer's guardian angel shows him that Marge would have been president if she'd never married him.

The USA.

...Really, I thought that would be pretty obvious based on the context.

Even if it was obvious it could still be the president of any nation (that has presidents, of course)

How many nations are abbreviated U.S.?

It's not really a nation, and it doesn't really have a president, but it does have a State Secretary of the Union, which arguably is relatively similar to a president, but it hasn't really had any Secretary prior to the current one, so the question at hand might not be the most interesting one.

But, you know, still.

I assumed that thread was changed from "Best President?" to what is it now, since that question was asked. Since asking "President of what?" while the thread being named exactly what seems a little, I don't know, straight out dumb. But I don't think Solitaire is dumb, so like I said; I assumed the name was changed. Or maybe it wasn't and Solitaire had a point with his rather oblivious question.

Or maybe Solitaire is straight out dumb ;)

My favorite president is Richard Nixon. He proposed the Environmental Protection Agency, and he opened trade relations with China. Unfortunately, he also made some bad decisions. He pushed for agricultural grain subsidies and made junk food cheap.

Point being, the question is more worthy of sardonic wit as a response, of which mine was obviously not up to par since it was taken literally by all save Lobstrich. Not considering myself qualified to gauge presidents other than those that have won the distinction during my lifetime, the question is roughly equatable to "Best 'American Idol'"? (presidential or otherwise...)

I'm gonna go ahead and say Calvin Coolidge or Ronald Reagan. Grover Cleveland and Harry Truman are up there (for dems), as are the classics like Abe Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington. Most overrated: the Roosevelts, Woodrow Wilson, and Andrew Jackson.

Alright alright...I'll play by the rules just this once...

Clinton. Eight years of NOT being forced to drown in economic recession just because the fucking joker running the country has a heart that pumps only Mid East crude oil through his veins, combined with the entertainment value of a nice, juicy, filthy sex-scandal, along with the fittingly metaphoric irony of having a second in command named 'Gore', just can't be topped.

There's no single best President. Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Kennedy, Clinton, Nixon, and Reagan were all good. They've all had their fair share of bad decisions and scandals, but those are all outweighed by their positive contributions. (at least more so than for other Presidents)

Determining the worst Presidents is far easier. Andrew Johnson and Warren Harding for sure.

One of those is not like the others. Obviously, Lincoln was a terrible president.

The title hasn't been changed at all.

Woodrow Wilson seems like he was nice enough, with his plan for Germany and all. It's a shame Clemenceau shot him down.

Speaking of Clemenceau, in a history lesson about the Treaty of Versailles our teacher told us that his nickname was "The Tiger", and asked if anyone knew why. I shouted out that it was because he looked like a walrus.
