With a b-day around the corner, and of course, Christmas (I love XMAS!)- I have to buy gifts for my favorite INTP. Having been together for 9 years, however... I'm at a loss. I think he has about everything.

What's the best gift ever for an INTP (computer geek, who I just bought a new monitor for). I'm INFP by the way :)

A Heckler & Koch MP7 Maschinenpistole in a glass case with a sticker saying Break in case of Emergency.

Failing that, an original Schmeisser MP40 is perfectly acceptable.

Something highly complicated, impressive and intricate, yet inherently pointless. A grandfather clock with no hands for example.

It really depends on that person's interests. If he likes a certain language, maybe a book in that language or a book about learning that language or related to the culture.

make something for him! it will be appreciated much more than something store-bought.

It's very sweet, but if that isnt something you can do, perhaps some CDs for him? or maybe some sort of puzzle for you both to solve?

I dont know anything about either of you, so im just telling you what I would like from somebody.

How about pretending it isn't his birthday or Christmas and it will be next Christmas before he notices he's missed this one? That would work for me. :D

Or try a giant inflatable penguin.

Orrrr... just promise there'll be no obligatory and monstrous family gatherings, no twee but meaningless sentimentality from folk he cares nothing for... just you and he alone somewhere for a week of sex and pizza. :)

You better make sure he doesn't have issues with Linux before going down this route.

Also, sex on an elephant? I'm trying to decide if I'm intrigued or disturbed.

You'd prefer sex on a camel?

Anything useful related to their interests. That and interesting books/CDs and gourmet dark chocolate with interesting flavor combinations. (The dark chocolate is just me, but you never know).

Oh certainly not. Too much of a chance of falling off a camel, with those humps and their fairly narrow backs...

Then again if you fall off a camel you're probably less likely to die or suffer serious injury than if you fall off an elephant...

I already know what I'm getting for Christmas, my parents just figured it out. One of those e-book readers. Those are pretty expensive though.

Um an R4? *smack*

Maybe a video game or CD purchased from a store in a totally legal manner? *shifty eyes*

I would be moved if someone knitted something for me.

Hmm isn't some nice silent company by the fireplace enough of a gift?

Peace and quiet and a nice companion to share it with. That'd be the best birthday present ever.

Or going outside in the rain. Getting soaked for no reason at all. Wandering aimlessly on empty streets or parks, with a grey sky and a half-smile and a camera.

Y'know, a day just for being and contemplating.

*looks down on consumer-fest christmas*

Of course there are also more sensitive, less mentally robust INTPs --- we are not all heartless bastards --- the EMO Wing as I once dubbed them.

For such, a Classic from a Feminist Giant might be the way to go. I would recommend Britney & Lynne Spears' --- a mother and daughter collaborative team in the field of Women's Studies: 'A Mother's Gift'.

An epic tale of a girl conquering adversity to fulfil her potential, rising inexorably from Mississippi ( the state, not the river, otherwise I would have used a definite article ) to conquer the world with her gift of song.

One reviewer says: "I finished it in 2 hours because I could not put it down".

Haha you guys are AWESOME! Thanks for suggestions... they're really good...

unfortunately there is no way i'll be knitting anything in the next couple weeks...and I'm not sure he's the type to wear a sweater out of sentimentality. Giant Penguin... now there's an idea...

I did buy him a book on evolution, which he was in a Wired magazine article, and he sounded enthused- but he's never even cracked it. not much of a reader, unless it's a programming book- that specifically addresses an issue he's trying to solve...

One idea I really liked is the ebook reader. Any suggestions on a good one? He mentioned wanting one awhile ago. Then again- I just said he didn't read much, didn't I? SO would it get much use? ;-) BUT- the best gifts I've given him have been technology gifts- we both work in IT. I Just think he has everything.

I think a quiet night in where I make him dinner and we watch a good movie is the best night...but what do I give him...you intellectuals are very hard to figure out!! Puzzles are GREAT... but I need one to keep him interested. Any quirky puzzles, or DNA kits, or something he can blow up?

I made an INFP some creative puzzles that she solved to gain a secret reward (a book and some sweets), and she seemed to appreciate it. Originality with a personal touch is always nice.

I support the idea of a quiet evening.

Certainly I too would recommend no actual showy 'present', but the sole gift of quiet companionship in for an afternoon lengthening into the midnight hours.

Such was the happy life I led with my dear Helga for 600 years in the Black Forest: after my woodcutting was done, and her womanly tasks completed, I would enter and eat the simple repast she had prepared; then she and I would sit in peace and harmony by the guttering light of the fire: her knitting and me whittling away making wooden trinkets. Neither ever having to say a word until I got up and knocked my pipe out upon the grate, she pinched out the failing candles, and in silence made our way up to bed.

Never were there a more contented pair, and until the day she died ( she committed suicide in the woodshed ) she had no unwanted gee-gaws, but all the unspoken happiness of constant quiet proximity.

My favorite gifts are small and sentimental. Handmade. Old. Symbolic. Intricate. Well-made. Metal, wood, glass, or stone.

I'm not quite sure why, but the combination of these two posts made me laugh

Not much of reader . . . are you sure he's an INTP?

I knitted a bunch of scarves one year and was really surprised how much people like them. Weird.

How about his own personal alternate universe?

Knitted scarves are awesome. How could you not understand that? I can't knit... very well... I did a long time ago.

One Christimas I was going through my old high school stuff and realized that I had waaaay too many ceramic pieces. Like bowls, cups, larger bowls, saucers, etc.

So I gave one to each of my relatives. They thought it was awesome.

Also when I graduated college I was going to be moving far away, from massachusetts to oregon. So I had a lot of cool relics that I had collected over the years. (Tapestries that hung in my room, ceramic bowls, other trinkets.) So I gave something to each of my close friends, so they'd have something of mine to remember me by. They liked that.

I often go crazy with gifts for my wife. She loved Megadeth/Dave Mustaine so a couple of years ago i got a set of his guitar strings off eBay and had a bracelet made with one of the strings embedded in the middle. She really liked that.

I sort of wished my wife would pay attention enough to just know my likes and stuff. Her friend ordered a custom Pink Floyd poker table; for her own husband. I was envious of that. Not so much the big gift but listening enough to know he would like that and the work to get it made.

That said I myself am very particular about stuff. I dont know if all INTP are like that. But while I may be into something , I dont like everything about it. I think that drives my wife crazy. for instance i like Dr. Who and a scarf would be cool, but i really want the season 18 purple red scarf not the earth tone multicolor scarf.

Well, maybe I don't understand because nobody has ever given me a knitted scarf. I tried to just make one for myself so I'd have a cool scarf to go with all my friends' scarves but I never finished it and now I don't have one. I should go find that thing and finish it!

something...rare, special. does he enjoy music? if so, i would be hoping his favourite was an artist with a wide array of hidden bootlegs, lots of little heard rare gems to find, get a couple of them. same idea with books (some really old, antiquity, infinitely artsy, intruiging and labyrinthian) i find that things like this are very special and personal

are you sure he is...human? :p i don't know

i would also consider, if he isn't at all human (:D), as lor said something utterly ridiculous like a Teddy Bear in a Suit Wearing a Strap-On Dildo, a Rocket/Chemistry set with a Selection of Former President Dolls to Fit to the Rocket, i can't imagine anything more fun! (find them president dolls! ;)

so, these presents will be completely weird and hilarious, i can't think of a better present. Oh, lots of Sex and Horror Movies too. sex while watching ...Elm Street should be fun, he could be freddy and you could be...Jason? :D lol, i dunno, definitely sex, more specifically intimacy and romance though

but what do i know, i am a 15 year old, socially retarded idiot but...:p
