Is there a ban list? Should we make one? (since there have been several bans in the past few days; hard to keep up)

I was thinking along the lines of a more comprehensive list. I did read over that thread before I posted here, but I thought others were banned in addition to 13.

Thank you for the link though Fukyo :)

I think, in my time here (slightly over a year), I've only ever seen one "real" ban. That was a guy named Thomas Young, who (aside from being a constant nuisance and speaking in the 'high and mighty' terms about spiritual evidence that only he had, but never giving it, and things like that) said a whole lot of sexist things, and then eventually directed them personally at one of the girls here, fernando_the_weasel at the time.

The only other sort-of ban that I can think of was facetiouspersona. He, of course, came back after a few days.

Before face, aside from thomas, I don't think our mods even did so much as warn anyone, much less do any real banning. So I think the list of bans are thomas young, then xii/metteyya/alice, and the only temporary ban goes to face

Melkor got also a temporary ban. Additionally, spam bots and the like get a permaban.

LoR mentioned that the admins were going to start taking care of other duplicated accounts. I'm assuming these are being taken out as part of that effort.

It's strange that they are banned and appear in the list of users logged into the forum. I'm figure it's a technical oddity, but can't really guess what the actual cause of it is.

A few days ago i banned about 35 spambot-accounts...
And yea, i think the "Who's on" has some technical problems (i don't know anything specific about that, but i heard other stories of the wrongness of the thing, i dunno)

Hey Onion, how are the bots getting past registration in the first place? Captcha might become obsolete soon, so your best bet would be to ask the registrant a simple question written in jumbled English.

waht si teh nmae of our plenat?

I suggest I could put the coordinate here but then
How about we use a technology that normal spambot won't be able to have, so the only bots that can penetrate this defence is through a specifically designed bots, and even then it will most likely fail?

I suggest having jumbled letter put on a grid (the grid shape are randomize, not necessary rectangular) then ask for a few words in the grid. Whoever registering have to find that word then use the mouse to draw a line across it. This would defeat even the most advanced letter recognition program due to the fact they still need to know the approximate position of letter, still have to consult a dictionary and have a failure rate high enough that they might fail to recognize the necessary letter for one of the word. For extra complexity, the word required is also displayed in the capcha style.

We have no less than three hacks to prevent spam, and generally they seem to keep out most annoyances.

Captcha has been renounced forever here, as has requiring email registration in the interests of simplicity and ease of registration. Most captcha, apart from being infuriating and barely able to act efficiently in use, has been superseded by virtue of bots being equipped with OCR capabilities which enable them to circumvent captcha instantly.

We rely on a few questions on registration to prove essential humanity. Not that mere humanity has any value in itself other than being presently breathing.

It has come to my attention that luconymous was banned. What exactly were the motives behind this?

What the... did someone get into banana's account and start spamming, or something? That's an oddly sudden change for someone with 230-ish legitimate posts who has been here for a long time...

...I will say, though, if someone had posted that picture in the "when you sit on the toilet" thread only, I would have laughed my ass off.

I assume this is the case.
He's received a one day temp ban until we can figure out exactly what's going on.

Would an honest and reasonable explanation of what took place concerning bananaphallus/ellen degeneres preclude any further/more permanent ostracism?

Very well, PhallicBanana, Pm me your honest and reasonable explanation along with an illustration of why I'm being spoken to by an apparent secondary proxy rather than waiting a mere twelve more hours until the other account is free again.
