So I had an ear infection for a few days and I could not make an appointment to see a doctor immediately. A few days later, coincidentally on the same day as my appointment, the pain in my ear subsided a fair amount. I still went to the appointment because it is just better to be safe than sorry. He looked in my ear and said it was infected... T_T .... He proposed to "flush" my ear and I went along with it. He fucking perforated my ear drum. Ever since I have been in so much pain I have been unable to work. The medication he gave is doing nothing as well.

What the hell are doctors useful for?

Wait, but, you can still hear out of that ear? I thought that perforating the ear drum means you lose your hearing?

And yeah, except in life-threatening instances, doctors haven't been extraordinarily helpful to me. Even then, they were pretty awful -__-'

I believe it can heal.

Doctors are good for not dying. I probably would have choked to death on my own mucus some time ago (I've got asthma) were it not for modern medical science and practitioners thereof.

Same as almost all other professionals. But then, there are anecdotal instances, like yours, where one bad experience is overblown and generalized.

Then again, there are some quacks out there, and we've all got to be wary.

An infection is not a reason for flushing unless there's a foreign object stuck in your ear canal. I'd sue or something. A perforated ear drum's no little thing...

Previously I could hear even with the infection. Now I can't.

It should heal.

I know! It hurts! Pulsating, shooting pain.

Next time you get an ear infection go to the pharmacy/drug store/whatever you call it in Australia and get some homeopathic ear drops. They usually contain sulphur, chamomille, and mercurius solubillis. Follow the directions and you should be okay.

I used to get ear infections annually as a child and recently they've started to come back. I've found this works just as well as the drops the doctors gave me when I was younger. But I NEVER had them flush out my ear ... crazy, cray cray.

They're subjective, though tend to follow a relatively common protocol.

Sometimes it may help to get multiple medical opinions. Sometimes you may even need to do research on your own, to find out wtf is going on.

I like doctors...I just seem to get random ailments, and without medication I'd probably be flopping around like a fish right now.

But they are human, prone to mistakes...that could possibly end their career too.

Doctors. What they tell you is all from a book, however one could be given this book and read it themselves. Can you not then be your own doctor? In other words Doctors are not there on a empathetic level for their patient, thus they discriminate the word 'doctor'.

Do not feel like telling the story long story as I have things I need to do, but to sum up the lesson of the story NEVER just go along with a doctor. Always understand what it is they want to do, not just from them, to you. Never assume they know everything about your kind of problem either.

doctors are good for making you so angry that you begin to do research [boring topics like nutrition] and take your health into your own hands. i understand that medical science is valuable, but in my grown up live i have regretted 9 out of 10 visits (and it's an exception that i even go there). and in my childhood and youth, when i was uncritical: who knows what all the vaccinations did to me, and thanks for all the amalgam ... besides: doctors ain't medical scientists. they are employees of pharma. i know you guys know that anyway, but i felt like preaching to the choir. isn't it fun to be a thought meme.

Well, it does take them 8 years to finish that book..

That's probably one of the most valuable things my mom has taught me about life. Get a doctor's opinion, think on it, get a different doctor's opinion, weigh your options, do some research, then decide.

That is, unless it's a really urgent problem, then all you can do is hope that your doctor makes the right call.
