An INTPf user who has written a hate message on my Twitter account

So... a certain someone from this forum who shall remain nameless for the time being left a hate message on one of my social media accounts. I know exactly who it is, but I don't see a way to contact anyone about it. I reported it through that site, but its origin was here, so I wanted to mention it here too. What can or should I do?

I find it strange that you create a thread about it.
The obvious way is to go to mods immediately, unless your goal is to show the offender that you are in control of their fate, which could mean:
-Their offence isn't serious enough to pacify them.
-You are trying to solve the problem by yourself using mods as a threat.
-You are unsure about the severity of the offence, or hope the offender doesn't know how safe they are.

Only if they took info from this forum with which to do it, and that's the only thing they could really get in trouble for by this mod staff.

Why? Because it's stultifying to people being open on this forum, if people stop feeling comfortable sharing because the information is likely to be abused elsewhere. So it can impact this forum.

Why? Because it's stultifying to people being open on this forum, if people stop feeling comfortable sharing because the information is likely to be abused elsewhere. So it can impact this forum.

Feeling secure about sharing personal stuff here is great, however I'd say the price for it is maintaining complete anonymity, never leaking relevant, traceable hints that others could follow to the source.

The more one wants to present their life on the internet, the more they have to obfuscate the crucial facts about them. Or someone can link their public life if there's nothing exploitable on either end.

In this instance, leaving a real twitter account, facebook, or else was a mistake from the beginning. Because it established a direct link between the forum persona and the private one.

Sure the offender may be punished for that reason, while the damage that could be avoided is now irreversible.

We don't have a policy. That was my personal opinion or suggestion.

I don't think so and I don't think 95% of others did or will do so.

What I mean for example when someone is a teacher and describes their experience in a classroom. It's not the best idea to share the name of their school and which class they teach. The useless details are kept hidden, while the valuable experience can be shared.

Being thoughtful and responsible is always recommended.

ok users here are responsible for the amount of personal information they share

I don't disagree that if someone went and found some really personal information posted on the forum and then went on to harass someone about *really personal thing* over social media, you'd take action on the forum. From what I can tell though, that isn't what's happened.

Not to mention, when I Google "dark matters Twitter" I can't really discern who is actually the dark matters from this forum, which leads me to believe that she's shared her personal information. Don't share your personal information maybe? Or just block the person? Hate message back? Find their address and order 50 large pizzas to them?

You're just setting up people to be harassed, because there is no ramification to abusing the info. Just get rid of the slots if you're not going to protect what members share there, when the sole point of those fields IS to share that connection information.

People are getting a little ahead of themselves arguing about something they don't know anything about. The only ones that know what went down, how and why are dark matters and the other person that was involved.

If dark matters decides to come forth with details to the staff, it will be evaluated and dealt with accordingly. In the meantime the finger pointing happening seems unnecessary.

The site allows information abuse? What?

Doesn't the mouth allow information abuse as well? People were born with the speech apparatus and able to give away their personal details. Should we restrict their freedom of doing so?

These fields are there for people to use. And many people are able to fill in alternate accounts or manage their personal privacy just fine. Do you suggest we should act preventively to avoid people being hurt after disclosing their information? That's beyond unreasonable.

As Fukyo said, this thread is a rampant speculation and we shouldn't make a drama out of it. Obviously we will react to evidence of abuse or harassment, otherwise your point is we should be supervising and managing people's input? What the heck? These fields are optional at best, even without them someone may share their data and is encouraged to do so, within safety precautions. Clearly forum moderators aren't almighty creatures able to ensure safety of their fellow netizens outside of their sphere of influence?

We may discourage or hunt down abusers all right, here, on this hunting ground, but we can't stop them from outside-using the information they were given.

I think the point is, if you aren't going to protect people from having their personal information abused, then you shouldn't provide a profile feature whose singular purpose is to share personal information. If this info was shared in a thread, that would be something entirely different, but if it was on a profile then I would say the forum itself is at fault to a degree for offering this field to share personal information but failing to make the ramifications of such sharing readily apparent. This may sound crazy, but there are some people who believe strangers are fundamentally good and trustworthy. Is this ridiculously stupid and naive? Yes, but it's also an aspect of their personality, and asking them to NOT be that way would be the equivalent of someone asking YOU to attend a party every day for the rest of your life.

I mean, that's rather the equivalent of saying, "Here at INTPforumtown, we want to maintain that small town atmosphere, so we encourage everybody to keep their front doors unlocked at all times. Of course, if you get robbed, that's your own fault and the police won't do anything about it."

I assume people are expected to think before they act.

I don't agree this is a problem for people who believe others are good, I think it's a problem for those who aren't critical enough about what they share.

We are going to protect abuse of information here on this forum.

Any expectation of our protection from abuse outside of this place is again, lacking in forethought and unreal. It's not a deception on our part that our abilities are confined, I think it comes as a given.

I'd recommend people abused on facebook or twitter to seek help from facebook or twitter authorities, or from the law enforcement officials of their local systems of government. We may deal with the offender here, but we won't secure their activity on other social media or irl.

And I really don't see how this risk is exclusive to this forum. People unable to ensure their safety are just as likely to be abused in real life or elsewhere on the net.

I'd go as far as saying that people who believe so, should have their information abused so that they know they shouldn't expect to be safe in more serious situations. It's much less dangerous to be harassed on twitter than to be later abused with heavier consequences.

I think the faith in goodwill of others is separate from complete belief in one's safety.

I think that as an NF with a lot of experience meditating on the emotions people cycle through (and sometimes act on, unfortunately), you understand that this person has already justified their boundary problems and negative attention seeking behavior to themselves.

I tried to do a couple of searches on this subject and didn't turn up any information. I didn't think to visit a moderator I knew about's personal page and PM them (I did look for a list or a contact form for a general inquiry like this but I wasn't able to find one). A thread was the fastest way to get the clearest and broadest set of rules and opinions, not just for me, but in case it happens in the future since there doesn't seem to be a precedent for handling this sort of situation. After all, I'm definitely not going to be here forever. I expect that my exit will be either welcome or uninteresting, but this place helped me once and I hope it can help someone who comes after me. That means I should at least try to contribute something to its future improvement.

Generally, these are the responses I expected. I'm glad I didn't seem to activate too many abandonment issues or inspire too much cynicism or Ne-paranoia. I did question the appropriateness of creating such a thread but decided in favor of it. And I did expect that I would have to explain myself eventually.

It wasn't that complicated, Blarraun. It was simply a description of cause/effect.

If people offer their information here publicly to make positive contacts, and it is abused by people making negative ones, they will stop providing their information in order to deter the negative contacts, which also removes the potential for positive ones. That's all.

If you're bothered by that as a staff, then do something about it. If you guys don't give a shit, then don't bother. The system will stabilize on its own either way. It's more a matter of what you're trying to cultivate. But it's certainly not complicated to understand.
